"...FOR MEAT LOVERS ONLY ~ GOOD VIBE & FAB DRINKS THOUGH..."
Tonight we ate at THE HOF DOWNTOWN on Bourke Street, Docklands - with a Groupon Voucher for 4..
Well, we got a park very easily - Underneath Etihad Stadium - No footy or cricket on - $15 flat rate on weekends..
The Hof is housed right across the road, in nice clean contemporary digs on 2 levels, and outdoors, as well.. Attractive staff - most have an accent.. Big long bar.. Huge tankards of German beer everywhere.. Place was flat out full, and our booking was for 9pm..
Food:
2 x Hof Sharing Platters - 1 chicken schnitzel, 2 mixed sausage skewers, 1 baked cured ham hock on undressed mesclun salad mix with a wedge of lemon - "loved the schnitzel.."
2 x Condiments Sharing Platters - potato mash, a dumpling, green cabbage sauerkraut, red cabbage sauerkraut, mustard, sour cream, bowl of jus and a bagel - "gorgeous mashed potato.." "loved the bagel.."
2 x Shared Desserts - 2 rolled crepes, a few chopped strawberries, 2 scoops vanilla ice-cream and a smear or two of golden syrup - "just what the doctor ordered, after all that pork.."
Drinks:
3 x Sparkling Strawberry Wine - Yummo...!!!
1 x Wild Berry Cider - Huge, 1/2 litre, tons of ice, Just so so good...!!!
1 x Apple Cider - Like an old-fashioned 'Shandy'..
3 x German Sodas - Interesting, Different..
Jug Chilled Water - Tap water, No charge..
Anyway the voucher cost $118 and drinks cost $72..
Not sure the experience was worth around the $50 each mark, no not really - but then, we're not real big fans of 'Aussiefied' German cuisine...
I do believe a better intro might have been platters including German foods other than thick northern European sausages and big fatty pork knuckles..
Yes, we'll give them another go, cos we really enjoyed the venue, the atmosphere, the service, and the drinks - this time though, we'll try the a la carte rather than a set menu - We'd 'v preferred to have ordered a few smaller dishes to taste, followed by dessert - and then, we might have been able to summon a real inclination to try out their big beers...
