I was hesitant because a German beer hall in Australia didn't sound like it would be very good - but I was wrong. This is a cute beer hall that mimics most München Haus'. It was still early in the day when we came by so it was mostly empty. We sat at a table outside, but with the plastic windows drawn since it was drizzling a little. The server was friendly and gave us good recommendations on food to share. The platter we got was supposed to be for 3-4 people, but with 8 of us not being too hungry, it was perfect for us to all try a little and have something while we drank. The espresso martini was surprisingly good, as well as the Oktoberfest beer that I had. No no no no no. Two stars because my husband liked the beer and because they had an authentic looking band playing. The food and service- zero! Food was quick... But very little flavor. Service was slow and lacking a general concept of what service is supposed to be. I ordered a wrap which comes with a side of bread (clearly stated on the ordering form). When I asked about my sourdough bread- he said let me ask the kitchen. Took the order form back and then came back with Rye bread and the order form. Wrong type of bread and nothing to put on it... It wasn't a pleasant food experience especially considering that less than 30 minutes after I ate my entire body felt like it was going to explode and I barely made it back to the hotel room. Who doesn't love a big stein of German beer. Anyway we had already eaten so no food just a beer to pass the time. This place is amazing. It's massive "so much room for activities" and going for opening night there were lots of activities. We reserved for a table of 4 for 6:30, and already a great buzz in there as the tables kept filling up. Come 7-7:30 the place was packed full. Servers well all on the game and just owning service, small delays here or there but for first open night that was just outstanding. Everyone was playing the part. There was music dancing and lots of chants. Keg openings free beer, I did some chicken dancing got a free shot, life was good and the night was amazing. The host was full of energy and the band were incredible. Keptd the party going. I ordered the locally made Munich larger and for $18 a stein it was great, a really nice beer. For dinner I had the pork knuckle($22 for half), and omg was it just to die for, this was beyond amazing and beyond my expectation it just melted in my mouth. Starters was pretzels ($4 ea) and garlic bread ($6), both also amazing Truly a great experience and a place you'll take a crowd spend lots of money and get rowdy in a full and fun atmosphere. We are staying at the Hilton near this restaurant and the concierge told us about this place. He said they make the best soft pretzels and he recommended my daughter try it. There is a nice view from here since it is right on the river. And it is very close to the good shopping if you need a nourishment break. Really enjoyed myself here, but it is a place of stark pros and cons: LOVED: - The beers, obvs. Liked the tasting notes also - good to find places that take beer seriously. - The lay-out of the place: it's huge, with a massive dining area and cool bar down the city end, as well as ample out-door dining areas. - The decorations: A few kooky things hung here and there to make you shake your head and question if you're seeing straight or have had too many steins. - The German touches (including the 'classic' beer-hall live music) make me reminisce and think of travelling, always a sure-fire way into my heart. DIDN'T LOVE: - Confusing paying structure. We had a massive group and was told there was no bill splitting. You can pay at the bar but only if you eat at the bar. They could find a way to make this easier, considering the whole restaurant set-up looks to cater for big groups. - Don't rate the food, personally. My pizza was a crisp, dry flaky tasteless square. Only way I got it down was smothering it with someone's mashed potato side. Others loved their schnitzels but from what I tried thought it was just ok, not great. (Also note the veal schnitz was a third as big as the chicken, for the same price.) - Don't know how I feel about the waitresses and their lederhosen and in-your-face cleavage. On one hand: 'authentic?'. On the other: pretty antiquated and sexist? It's not Hooters so maybe this is one area they can drop the 'authentic Brauhaus' vibe? Next time will probably skip the meal and just nest up in the bar. On a beautiful Sunday stroll along South Wharf, during another one of Melbourne's favorite food and crafts festivals, the turistas were out in force along the South Yarra River esplanade (as were we!), and from the plethora of food sources available to us, we honed-in on the far west-end of the wharf at Munich Brauhaus. It's a relatively large restaurant in comparison to what's around it, taking up a large chunk of dockside real estate. Naturally, on a sunny day, the water-side tables were packed. Luck was on our side and we were able to grab a table for our threesome. A couple of HB Dark brewskis (A$10.50 ea.), and a Coke (500 ml @ A$6.50), was a nice lunch start on a warm afternoon. As its Munich moniker implies, this is a German-style brewhouse with a pub-slanted menu. From what we could see from our fellow patrons, the schnitzels were looking mighty popular. Our Alaskan (via German-speaking Switzerland) buddy, naturally, went with the Veal Schnitzel (A$29); we ordered an entree of Salmon Tartar (A$16); the Flame Potato Pizza (A$14) for my mate; and the Flame Mushroom Pizza (A$15) fur mich -- that's German "for me." ;) The schnitzel arrived looking, well, like a crusty schnitzel! Nicely encrusted and deep-fried. That was served with a side of slaw, and a basket of rosemary-salted fries (or "chips," as they say). The single-serve pizzas were super-thin crusted, and simply topped with its ingredients (bacon, potato and pecorino for my mate; minced mushrooms, goat-cheese and watercress for me). Our buddy said the schnitzel and slaw were tasty. The pizzas, unfortunately, were on the cold side. The super-thin crust simply didn't hold its heat very long. Otherwise, though, the flavors were good. And, too (for mine), the mushrooms were too watery; thus, the crust was on the soggy side. The fries/chips were tasty, but (overall) lacked the rosemary flavor -- there was a hint of it, though, on a few of the bites. Sadly, the Salmon Tartar was a no-show. Sitting outside, everything had to be paid up-front, as served. The wait-gal apologized for the inconvenience, stating that people have flown-the-coop without paying; thus, this pay-up-front policy. A bit unusual; but (on the positive side), when done, we didn't need to wait for a check...! Wow this place is huge. Opening night party of 4 and we were placed in the main hall next to some friendly seniors. German oompah house band was playing some great tunes and weird covers (Kylie and 100 red balloons etc). Great crowd, excellent host and huge steins of beer. So great vibe, we booked in for a 6:30 dinner and didn't leave for almost 4 hours because it was so much fun (and it takes a while to drink a few litres of beer). We ordered a few pretzels ($4 each) and a garlic bread ($6) which were both nice and then started looking for mains. The lamb shoulder was apparently amazing for the meat eaters though as a vegetarian I found my choices very limited. I ended up with the German version of Mac and cheese ($23) but while it was definitely cheesy it was nothing remarkable. For the price tag I felt quite duped. I think the atmosphere on opening night was excellent - the host and staff did their job amazingly well for a new place and I couldn't fault them at all. But it is expensive ($20 average for a steine) and $25-30 for a main. I wouldn't recommend any vegetarian to go here and while it's great for a group for a show and some drinks I wouldn't come here as a date or a nice night out. The atmosphere at Munich Brauhaus was seriously fun! The band that was playing had our little guy shaking his booty from the second we walked in the door. I was the designated driver so hubby enjoyed a cold German beer while I had a look around with the boys, we were there to check out their Sunday Family Funday. Some of the amenities to cater for the kids include: - a change table (and notable mention that it is located in the unisex disabled toilet. Yay for the nappy changing dads!) - high chairs - kids menu - colouring sheets and pencils - free kids meal with the purchase of an adult meal on Mondays and Tuesdays - on Sundays there will be a childrens entertainer from 12.30-3.30, activities are in a separate room, there are tables located within. The kids meals arrived first and they were HUGE. Kids meals were all $6 each. Trying to decide what we would have wasn't easy, with a big selection of sausages and schnitzel and loads of other delicious options including steak, crispy pork belly and roasted duck to name a few. We decided on the schnitzel which was really tasty and cooked to perfection, and we were pleasantly surprised to read that they could also be ordered with a gluten free crumb. Most disappointing experience. Right from the get-go, there were issues. Firstly, through no fault of the restaurant, South Wharf has "columns" outdoors with names of restaurants on them, that point you in the right direction. Munich Brauhaus wasn't on the list so we couldn't find it easily. We ended up entering the restaurant on the opposite side to where we were supposed to, and therefore we were led all around the place to go to the host, only to be led right back where we started to get a table that wasn't even ready yet. Secondly, maybe I'm getting old, but I didn't know there was live music. It was LOUD. Therefore, all tables had to shout to each other, which meant we all had to shout and it wasn't a great experience if you want a meal out where you can talk and catch up. It didn't help any that our waiter wouldn't speak loudly, nor could he hear us. There were a few issues with the amounts of beverages brought to the table, but at least they got the food right. That brings me to the food ... Well ... Firstly, they were OUT of Weiner schnitzel. OUT of it. It's like saying they're out of beer. It's a staple item and it's one of the reasons you'd go to eat there. It's their specialty. How can they be out of it??? When the meals came, they were very small in relation to the price. I think the food was very average, and over priced. I ordered their mac 'n cheese (quite good) and a side of schnitzel bites, but the "bites" were just a few loose strips of meat. Some meals were dry and a little undercooked, but at least there was a little bit of flavour. When we were done, not one staff member tried to upsell by asking us if we wanted dessert. Mind you, I wouldn't really even know if they sell dessert, because it's not on their online menu, or the main menu within the restaurant, so maybe they don't sell it at all. Overall, considering parking can be a real B on a weekend, and the food was really only average (as was the service), I doubt very much whether I'd return or not. The main dining room is decked out beautifully and on this particular Sunday (I don't know if it's every Sunday), we got live music. The space is huge and very baby/ children friendly. The food though, wasn't anything special and it's quite exxy for what we got. I ordered what was supposed to be a big feast for people with big appetite: a mix sausage platter for $32 which turned out to be average size. With about 6 different types of sausages there are some interesting textures and flavours, and whilst it said its house made, is it worth $32?! :/. Hubby had a fish and chips $22 and the chips were delish and it came with some tartare sauce that tasted a bit truffley. He also ordered a side of paprika potatoes which was very bland and looked a bit burnt. I love the life created with the new development beyond the traditional restaurant packed South Bank. The German beer hall (and restaurant) is huge and very popular. Sadly it also attracts a lot of groups of idiots. The wonderful outdoor seating is ruined by smokers (as always in Melbourne) but the riverside setting is excellent and there's a lot of it. I've only had a snack here (hot dog once and garlic bread another time) and it was decent but more like beer fillers than somewhere to go for a dinner imo. Had a fantastic night here last week for a bucks night out. The food and beverages are fantastic. A large array of Australian and international beers - boutique and generic. Food is classic German with a modern touch. Brauhaus is a little pricey - but that's the promenade. Our waitress was a little short with us but softened up after we had a bit of a chat to her. Great German restaurant with absolutely abysmal service, to the point that it was just uncomfortable. We arrived for lunch, and got seated almost instantly, but our server was nowhere to be found. We waited about ten minutes, and went back up to ask if they could send a server over. Another five minutes we get someone who came to take our order... But we never got menus. More time elapses as we wait for menus to appear. Had to ask another server to get ours again to order, and when our food finally came we still didn't have cutlery and had to track someone down again. With that being said, the stupid huge beers they serve here have sky-high novelty value, and the sausage sampler platter I got was incredibly good. If I didn't have a ginormous beer, my patience probably would have been really tested here, but it was neat sitting on the water watching boats go by and helicopters land to go to Crown. Traditional hipster inspired German beer hall sums up Melbourne's latest beer hall. A lot of thought has gone into this space and it certainly oozes a certain gourmet-man-cave feel to it. The interior spaces are wide, open and filled with light natural wood decor. There's a few funny puns to be spotted. On a high note there are ample toilets for all genders. Meaning less waiting time and more drinking time. Another well thought out area from this group. A less well thought out area is the female staff uniforms. The girls here wear teeny tiny lederhosen. Think daisy duke style complete with pockets hanging out below. It's a rather odd choice for a female uniform and seems to encourage and emphathise that this is a giant man cave. On our visit we say outside freezing, as did all the female staff. Oddly enough they were allowed to wear very stylish jackets. But still had to bear all from the pockets down. Now to the more serious side of things- The Food! The food here is not vegetarian friendly. There is a very small section of the menu that is targeted towards vegetarians. More so a tip of the hat we acknowledge you exist but don't really want to make eye contact with you. Our group had a few vegetarians who ordered pizzas (yeah see what I mean. Hipsters bringing pizzas into a beer hall!) these came out nearly an hour after the rest of the table. The menu here is really bavarian inspired with hipster twist. There's a neat bar menu and a small restaurant menu. We choose a tasting platter, which have us a good over view on what's on offer. The pork belly was a winner, as well the schnitzel. To portion of pork knuckle needed a chisel to be consumed. Very overdone. As a meat eater the food arrives deliciously fast. Now let's talk about ze Beers! A little sad that there aren't that many beers on tap. The beer menu has a great little speil on the beers from Oktoberfest. Sounds wonderful! But too bad they aren't on tap to be consumed. The beers on tap are a little different and hipster. As a non beer drinker I didn't mind the mango beer. There was an apple cider and a basic wine list. A little disturbing was the prettier girls walking around with trays of red bull and jäger shots for $10. Final thoughts are how lovely the staff are. Pork knuckle while huge was merely okay and not nearly as flavourful as I hoped. Yes the meats come on top of a generous mound of starch and sauerkraut but I could have used more flavour in the protein. It had a crispy chewy skin that I did enjoy though. This is one of several restos along the waterfront area that, based on my experience all serve overpriced food that has ranged from delicious to merely okay. Sorry guys but was a little disappointed with the food. I know that German food can be heavy and I'm taking that into consideration when I say their schnitzel was tasteless and heavy. Had the pig knuckle as well. It was a better meal and I did like how the outer skin was fried a nice crackly golden brown but dude where's my sauerkraut and my mash potatoes ? Yes. They were technically there but really just a couple table spoons worth. Why so stingy ? ...and hey, use more sauce on your knuckle. There wasn't enough and it was bland. You CAN put a little vinegar in it to liven it up a bit ! In my opinion stick with the beer. Also pretty expensive but you can get a massive mug for about $20. I always get super excited when I find a German Beer bar, let alone when I stumble upon one! After shopping at the DFO, my sister and I dropped by here for a drink. And by drink, I mean at least a 1L stein of German beer. The customer service was very helpful, if not overly prompt, always offering us refills and food to eat. I had two beer, both with great tasting notes and tried the cider. The cider was quite sweet yet refreshing and not sickly. I ordered a couple of pretzels as a snack and they were perfect. And, in that regard, I wasn't disappointed - the pork knuckle accompanied by a Dunkels was very nice. The service from the greeting at the door to the attentive, but not invasive, service at the table was very good. I have to confess that I felt that the food was a bit overpriced for what it was, but not horrificly. We went along for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon and, with that in mind, sitting in a huge, empty hall really did make us feel quite isolated. But... Went with a group of friends last night for a 6pm booking. We were shown to our table and informed that we had a table time limit of two hours before being hussled for drinks. After ordering, the drinks arrived nano seconds later and then we were asked about ordering our food. We asked the waitress to give us 5 minutes which she reluctantly agreed to. We then ordered our food which arrived faster than a Maccas drive through. About 7:30 we ordered more drinks and were then reminded about the time limit at the table. When the drinks arrived at 7:40 we were reminded about the time limit again and encouraged to start getting ready to leave. At 7:50 we were presented with our bill and asked to leave the table (!). In summary: I realise that you cant sit there all night but the restaurant was 3/4 full at best. If you hassle people to leave then you are not going to sell more food and drinks. The food was good but not spectacular and very production line. Very overpriced for what it was. Because the restaurant hall is so big and there was a band playing the noise was unbelieveable leaving no chance for coversation. We had been planning a special night for my husbands birthday but was left disappointed. After travelling from the outer SE Suburbs, we wont be back. Went there today around lunch time with some friends from interstate for the first time and I have to say it is a pretty awesome place Goodfood good service will be heading back with some other friends I'm sure sometime soon. Well worth checking out. read more

The Munich Brauhaus, Friday 1-07-16 If you are seeking a quiet, intimate and romantic dinner for 2, seek somewhere else...... If you are seeking a great night out with great beer (that is not the ....mass produced, all tastes the same, no personality beer) great food and great floor show, this could be the place for you. It will not be 'cheap eat' as if you want quality, it comes at price, but you won't bee fleeced for lack of quality and quantity and also the fun a positive atmosphere can make you consume another great beer and maybe a schnapps at the end of the night. The venue is easy to get to by tram by the number 35, 70, and 75 trams travel along Flinders Street with stops just after Spencer Street and just walk across the river. By taxi, to and from you can go from the front of the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf or from Crown Casino and walk down. By car, park at Care Park Siddley Street Docklands and just walk across the river. This was the 3rd time of the Munich Brauhaus treatment, and this time I invited a group of friends for a night out. The venue is a converted wharf shed with high ridged roof / ceiling solid floor and lots of glass looking out to the Yarra River and the bard walk. This is another great example of a converting a not fully used space and area of Melbourne (the most livable city (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economist_Intelligence_Unit) into a great space. The tables are solid pine looking trestle tables with wooden chairs or long booth seats which is great for large gatherings of family and friends. With open space and the wooden Deer antler shaped over head lighting arrangement and all the other trimmings gives and impression of what a German beer garden would look and feel like.....Big, loud, fun, full of life and memorable moments. All the front of house team are attired in a conservative German traditional outfits, they are at tentative ensuring the guests have a drink, clearing the tables on time, suggesting the next course or food item. The team out the front has a good grasp of the dink and food menu so they are able to guide the guest to an appropriate item to enjoy. The waiters carry a small tablet in the side pouch so all orders can be placed and deliver to the guest in a very timely manner, as during the evening the drinks came to our table within a few minutes of ordering and the main courses were all deliver to the table within a short timer of ordering them. The waiter who guided us on our Munich night out was very good, placing the correct meal in front of the guest the first time. Ensuring that we had our drinks and when time to clear it was completed just after everyone had finished and we were returned to a cleared table. The whole front of house team is clearly structured into table waiters (gathering orders, clearing the tables) food serving waiters (returning to the kitchen ready to deliver the next tables meals), bar attendants (pouring drinks) and drink waiters (serving the drinks). This way the flow of service for the guest is improved, the floor team duties are clearly defined and the team does not have time wasted walking around the venue from the kitchen, bar, and around, and around......working smarter, not harder. The food....the food....bring a good apatite, you are going to need it. I eat and recommend for 2 or more the, 'Munich Brewers Platter' as it has all the house specialties on one platter to sample and enjoy. My guests had a selection of the pork Schnitzel, beer steamed mussels, potato & pork hash and more. The look of surprise from my friends as my Munich Brewers Platter was placed in front of me was great. The table was very quiet during the meal as every one of my friends was enjoying their own meal and with a little sharing of my platter along the way so others can taste the great food, everyone on the table was satisfied with the quality and quantity of their meal. The Apple Strudel is just about the best that I had, it reminds me of the way that my chef Macuzzi instructed me to cook his version of Apple strudel. Crisp thin pasty rolled with stewed apples served with a haus (house) made vanilla anglase (pouring custard) and cream. I usually have this with an apple Schnapps, but on this night the apple schnapps was out of stock (too much for the kitchen may be...?) so I had the apricot Schnapps which accompanied the apple strudel very well. The band is always a fun part of the entertainment for the night, with a couple of small competitions to partake in, I will not let in on the competitions, but I will say one of my more reserved friends got up front and centre and after partaken in a competition, will now be know at the 'Stein Master'. As part of the entertainment the band will demonstrate the Alphorn, which was the Swiss version of the communicating between mountains, long before the mobile phone. Will I return...?
