Stein of bitburger
Dave S.

Hophaus is a newly opened German beer hall and restaurant in the Southgate centre in Southbank. Excellent selection of German beers---I was able to have a huge stein of Bitburger which made me quite happy on a chilly winter day. The food is traditional Bavarian which means it's mainly meat and potato focused. Two of the standouts were the Kartoffelpuffer which are delicious potato pancakes with apple sauce (similar to Jewish latkes) and the enormous pork knuckle (how that was classified as a small dish is beyond me). For the main I shared the Bavarian platter which is a large spread of meats and various German treats. The pulled pork and sausages were highlights of the platter as was the warmed bretzel. The only item I could do without was the smoked herring---it was very salty and too chewy for my liking. The platter is large enough to be a main for 2 people to share. Our meal also came with an assortment of prepared German mustards which are great for the sausages. I can't wait to check out Hophaus in the summer. There is a huge outdoor terrace overlooking the Yarra with large communal tables. It should be THE beer garden in Melbourne when winter finally subsides. Note Hophaus is a modern/Australian take on a beer hall which means it is newer and more industrial than the traditional halls you'd find in Munich, but retains certain features such as the massive steins and communal tables. All in a great spot, especially if you're in the mood for German beers.

BIER TASTING PADDLE

Went to Hophaus on a Tuesday night, and right from the beginning I knew this would be a below-average night. To start, there was no one to tell us to either take a seat or to seat us. The place was maybe a third full, but no waiters or bar people paid any attention to me or my companion. Finally went to the bar and the guy there apologized and said he would get someone for is. Waitress eventually came and seated us, again apologizing saying they had a birthday party going on (as if that were an excuse to ignore anyone else). And that's pretty much how the night went: ignored. Most of the evening we couldn't get a server's attention no matter what we did. As for the food, I lived in Germany for five years, so I know German food. What we ordered wasn't exactly your typical German fare. Had the pulled pork, which was the special that night, and what I got was a shredded sausage in a hotdog bun. Was dry and not tasty at all. The side was fried potato salad, which I had never heard of before. Wasn't very good at all. Looked like corn flakes and tasted faintly like french fries. The one good thing I can say is they didn't screw up the beer. Had the tasting platter, and that was pretty cool. So if I ever were to go back, I'd just stick to the beer and simple snacks and forget about ordering a real meal.

Only had time for 1 pint. Nice selection of German beers and the bar menu looked nice in that hofbrahaus sort of way - bratwurst anyone ? It has nice outdoor seating and looks very inviting. Need to come back for food and a few more pints!

Crispy pork knuckle. Amazing.

Having been to Germany with my boyfriend only a couple of months before, we walked past this place along the strip of restaurants in Southbank and couldn't resist a walk down memory lane. We were happy to discover the dunkel weisse bier, my new favourite beer and not too easy to find in regular pubs! Keeping a promise to myself to order the pork knuckle should I ever see it on the menu, my choice was easy. It was true to its word, the crackling was delicious and crispy and there was so much of it. The meat underneath was tender and fell off the bone, like it had been slow cooked for hours. The flavours were a bit different to the pork knuckles I had in Germany, as if it had been marinated before cooking. Don't mistake this for a complaint however, it was amazing and I ate every morsel of that little beauty. The red cabbage it was served with complimented it well, and it too was devoured with gusto. My boyfriend decided on the $20 dinner deal with pork schnitzel with sauerkraut and spätzle (usually it comes with potato salad but he's not a fan and the restaurant was happy to substitute it), and this came with a 330ml bitburger bier. Despite seeing my pork knuckle, he didn't suffer any food regret as he thoroughly enjoyed his meal. Not being able to control his sweet tooth, he also ordered the apfelstrudel for dessert. It wasn't very authentic, being made with puff pastry (although if I'm being honest I actually prefer it that way!). I had a bite or two, but after my meal I unfortunately couldn't fit much else in. Service was great too, I think our waitress might even have been German. I would definitely come here again!!

Pork knuckle....steamed and soggy, not crispy full of crackling as it should be!

When I walked in I was greeted and asked if I wanted to sit outside or inside. I opted for inside. After being seated I was told to either order off the QR code or go up to the bar. After a look over the menu, I saw that flights were available. This was my best option to try a variety of beers! I walked up the bar to place my order. Elphie (sorry if that's spelled wrong!) helped me. I told her I was from NY and wanted to try the best Australian beers; minus IPAs and sours. I asked her to pick the beers for my flight. She did an amazing job and I loved all of her choices. Each beer was unique and had great flavor. Thank you for your wonderful selection! For food I ordered the cheese plate. While it was delicious and paired well with the beers I realized I should have ordered some "cooked" food so that I could've tried something the kitchen has to offer as I'm sure it would have been delicious. I will absolutely come back here again when I'm on this side of the equator! I highly recommend coming here...Aussie local or not...this is the spot!

This definitely turned out to be one of those places that I really liked.

Actually, this was probably better than the bars because it is in here that you will discover beers that you simply will not find elsewhere, and that was certainly what happened to me. The turn to get here is very sudden, leaving no room for error. It's a good thing that U-turns are an easy fix. Hop Nation is located in a very industrial plot. It's a quaint, little, chill, no fuss set-up. Set amongst the warehouses, there's an open roller door which leads way to a craft brewery. Hop Nation defines all of the indie expectations that come with craft beer and it's nestled into Footscray. There's a few standing cocktail tables with high seats, then your eyes meet a quaint little bar. They have a few beers on tap, and popcorn for the munchies. Load up with your choices and find a seat, I'm sure you won't be in a hurry to get out of this brew bar. The best thing is that Hop Nation welcome outside food. That's a huge plus for a venue. And you will want food, cause you will be snuggling yourself in, trying out their beers. You have the option of bringing your own, or getting UberEats delivered. It's a cool spot perfect for a midday session. And the beers are spot on too.

The lunch specials for $13.50 sounded pretty good, so I got a skewer of mixed sausages with potato salad and green salad (on the menu it's called Wurstlspiess). Waited at the bar for my beer and by the time I got back to the table, within 5 minutes of sitting down, my dish was served woo hoo! Considering how busy they were, I was stoked at the fast turnaround time (I was starving!!). Didn't seem like they were too consistent though, as half my colleagues got theirs quickly and the other half waited longer. Let's just say I was happy to be on the right half of the team :) The meal itself was A OK! It was a complete package of meat, carbs and greens. With mustard. Yum! The sausages didn't have that 'fresh off the bar-bee' taste, but can't complain, there was variety (4 different kinds), and I think compared to the other specials, this looked more appetizing. Serving size was just right for me. The venue itself is cool, decked out like a Bavarian beer hall with servers in traditional garb. Check it out for lunch if you're in the area!

There is quite a large beer garden out the back (though if it didn't have one then calling it the 'Fitzroy Beer Garden' would somehow defeat the purpose). With Forester's Hall now open right across the road having 'beer' in their name also gives some cohesion to this corner of Smith St, and I'm sure we wont be the only ones to start at FBG in the afternoon sun then drift across the road to sample the impressive beer range at FH this summer.
