The coastal town of Hilo hides the fantastic speakeasy, The Hidden Nēnē. Head down the stairs by the green door, and it becomes less hidden, and you can see the sign for the basement level bar. The underground space is low green lighting, a long bar, and green velvet bar chairs. We went during the day, so they were not busy, and were able to sit at the bar. The service was quick, relaxed, and friendly. The cocktails are upscale priced, but well made. They do offer a full food menu, we did not order any food on our visit.

Love how hidden this place is, you can't tell from the outside that it is there once you step inside you're transformed to a whole new place. With a vibe of class, relaxation and touches of Hawaii. The staff ALL were so incredible. Since it was our first time going they gave us the time to decide what we wanted and was very helpful. I love that you can design your own board so you're able to get exactly what you want and nothing that you don't. We got a few boards to try different items. I LOVE the lilikoi it is like candy and it great mix with the spreads, cheese and beverages. The popping liquor choice was by far our favorite for our celebration get together. The birthday girl enjoyed a few of those and were my favorite. They had a variety of options including smoky ones, ones on fire and more. The bartenders really made it a creative fun and enjoyable experience. I almost don't want too much people to know so I will be able to get a spot every time but this is too good of a spot to not share. Love having something like this in Hilo.

Hands down the best bar in downtown Hilo. The cocktails are so creative, each drink is an adventure. My husband ordered the Spam Dram which is reminiscent of a Mint Julep with butterscotch undertones. The Advice was fruity, herbaceous and smooth. The Ko Cane is a spirit forward rum cocktail. Staff are super nice.

The Vodka Drink

Genuinely amazing cocktails, unique and tasty and the happy hour deals are killer. Don't miss out on this spot.

After a day up on Mauna Kea & our last day back home we decided to go our favorite bar in Hilo to top off our trip! Kinda want to keep this place a hidden secret so shhhhhhh. Took my Gf & her brother from Maui 1st time in Hilo and at hidden nene for him. My GF's brother is also a bartender on Maui! He was very impressed with the selection of drinks and of course the ambiance of the bar. We all agreed hands down the best bar and happy hour. Ambiance and speakeasy vibe is our type of bar with the hidden bar. The creativity of the drinks, live music and pop up events make this bar very unique Shoutout to our bartender Tasha!! She was awesome! Made our visit pleasant and welcoming! My gf's brother was amazed of the preparation and presentation of drinks! Tasha and staff sets the bar high for sure! We originally found this spot after seeing my friend Keoni Payton (Pain killers) (Farmers Market Hawaii) post story on IG a while back now officially our third visit. This place is bomb kinda don't want to share it but keep this place in business! Mahalos Tasha & Hidden Nene! Can't wait to be back!

Menu has changed a bit since last visit. They have a full menus with bites and cocktails. My group just got cocktail. They still have some of their classics and some new additions. Still a great place to get a drink before dinner reservation. This place is spacious and cozy, if that makes any sense. Servers are attentive and everything was delightful. There was a mix up on our bill but they were quick to fix.

Works of art!

Wow, what a great place. Our drinks were a masterpiece. Fun place for a cocktail and friends. We were visiting and were brought here by a local. Staff is great.

Amazing experience at this gem in Hilo, it's like stepping into another world, and the cocktails are seriously next level! Excellent service, beautiful interior and lighting, I live on Maui so I will be visiting sooner than later!

This place is the cats pajamas! Definitely stop by for lunch, I tried the hummus wrap, YUM! Great portion size, wonderful accompaniments of sweet potato chips and pickled asparagus. Service was great from Crystal and the owner Char herself! The cocktail list is so creative, you'd have to come back to try 1 of everything! The place itself has such a cozy, speakeasy atmosphere. Definitely the ultimate hidden gem in Hilo. Everything was 10/10. This will be one of my stops every time I am on island.

Smoky Bear, an old fashioned featuring Birdseye pepper and smoke

This was the coolest cocktail bar I found on my trip to the big island. It had a lot of creative craft cocktails, many of which utilized local flavors and Hawaiian made spirits. It had the nice ambiance you'd expect from a speakeasy, and even had live music. The drinks were pretty good and unique but I found a few of them a tad too sweet for my tastes, with the Spam Dram and Moonlight being a bit syrupy. To me it felt like the sweetness hid some of the unique flavors in the drinks. This is the main reason I have rated 4 instead of 5 stars. However, I'd highly recommend the Iwakaluakumaha, which I found perfectly balanced and as of writing, is available for $10 during happy hour!

Cute little place and good happy hour with some snacks. Strong and delicious drinks. Don't get upset as these drinks are a work of art and does take some time so when it gets slightly busy it'll be a wait.

As a senior General Manager and sommelier of a large restaurant group, the hidden nene was by far the highlight of our Hawaiian vacation. Char's service and drink menu blew me away and left this sommelier beyond impressed with a camera roll of beautifully garnished drinks that I couldn't have imagined ever creating myself on my best day. I know the next time I come to Hawaii, I will for sure be back to see Char and company, and to be honest I can't wait!

Cute bar. We only stay for one drink but it's a fun experience. I think I'd go for longer if the menu had more variety.

We ordered the risotto, fresh catch (marlin), crispy rice, gnocchi, and finished off with the mac nut ganache mascarpone pots de crème. We did share a Lemon peel lemonade cocktail. The Lemon peel lemonade was basically spiked lemonade. Well balanced for being a tart oriented drink, but I didn't care for the floating bits. The risotto which comes in full and half order, was very rich and had chunks of mushrooms for flavor. We're glad we got the half as this was a heavy, rich, and cheesy entrée on its own. If you love risotto, you will love this dish. The marlin was perfectly cooked and balanced out with a locally inspired vegetable succotash. Fried bits of kalo were also added in for added texture. The special and new item, the gnocchi was the star of the show. This is by far the fluffiest gnocchi we've ever had. Crispy on the outside, little potato clouds of fluff on the inside. The gnocchi came over a tasty sauce with bits of fried onion for absolute perfection. The crisp rice was recommended by Yelpers and it was alright, crispy rice with a spoon of poke. Not bad, but did not live up to the hype. Get another order of the gnocchi instead. It's fairly rare to see pots de crème on restaurant menus, specials or not, so we had to get this. It came in a cute little glass jar, with rich chocolate and mascarpone flavor with a hint of mac nut. This desert was an absolutely delicious perfect end to the meal. You can make reservations online, street parking is quite limited, and it can get busy as the night goes on, so recommended to get an earlier dinning time. Staffs regularly checked in on us and were polite and efficient.

Yelp 365 Challenge 2015 #68/365…read more This is only the second bar I've been to in Hilo (since I moved to Oahu before I was of legal drinking age) and although it's inside an old building, it just feels like home to me. Not literally my house, but the comfort and relaxed feeling of Hilo. Aunty Yong's Place is located right next to Nori's Saimin & Snacks, and since Bamboo Garden has closed, my friends that still live here have migrated over. It was pretty much exactly what I expected from a Korean dive bar. Booths, karaoke, two dart boards, music playing, it's a fun time. They also have a bunch of drink specials, ranging from $5-$8, and they have Kona Longboards and Big Wave on special for $4. No drafts here though, just bottles and aluminum bottles of Bud Light. Gosh, free pupus. WHY DONT WE HAVE FREE PUPUS IN HONOLULU?! Crazy. When I met my friends who were already there, there were plates of smoked meat, tofu, kim chee, veggies... What the hell, Oahu. WHAT. THE. HELL. Get with it!! I think they have food to order too, but I didn't see a menu or order anything, cause never need!! Their karaoke selection is pretty impressive for an old-ish bar. They have some recent (2013ish) additions to go along with the classics, and it's $1 per song. They have two dart boards, new ones with cameras! So if you have one of those cards with your ranking or whatever, you can use those dart boards to play (I guess, I actually have no idea how those cards work). We saw a fatty roach scurry across the floor while we were playing darts, but it comes to no surprise, as the building is super old. It's a great dive bar and made me feel right at home on my first night back. Cheers!

We watched waiters set up for two parties; we thought okay, they're busy they'll come after they set the tables. It was at least 8+ for each party, we completely watch both parties arrive, get seated, and got given waters, while all we got were menus. We patiently waited but as soon as we seen waiters started taking likely drink orders, we had enough, we had to have been waiting for at least 45 min. It was disappointing because it's been months since we last came here and we were excited and looking forward to eating here. We ended up leaving and going to Hawaiian style because they had no line. We got seated there right away and got our food quick. Likely won't be coming here anytime soon because of this experience.

Granted, the outside looks a little rough. There's mostly neon signs looking out at you from the dark inside. When you walk in, you'll notice the floors are concrete and that there are pool tables. Walking in, it seemed like the place has seen better days. However, looking at everyone in the bar, they all seemed like someone you could easily strike up a conversation with. My boyfriend and I were mostly looking forward to trying a margarita. We both ended up with a POG margarita. If you're unfamiliar with what POG juice is, it is Pineapple, Orange, and Guava juices mixed together. While the margarita was very strong, overall it was a delicious drink! We even got to try Lihing mui powder. If you go, look it up and ask for a glass rimmed with it! There is no air conditioning within the bar but we'd been there after sunset and didn't really feel hot. The bartender Kya? Kia? was so wonderful! After checking out the reviews, I did see some negative Nancy's on the platform talking about how this felt like a 'locals only' place. When I walked in, I made sure to strike up conversation with Kya and asked how her day was. Everyone on the island realizes you are probably vacationing. I was treated so wonderfully and Kya even gave me a recommendation for a hike in the national park. Be so kind to people and you will always make a friend!
