Located a few seconds from the Beach, in Brighton Le-sands, the Hellenic is the lastest taste of…read moreGreece to have hit our taste buds, and probably one of the best things that's ever happened to Bay Street.. in my humble opinion. When you combine two great things like envelopes, and wheat, you get the Pita bread. The Hellenic offers the very best in Greek street food, without compromising your budget. Despite it being a order at the counter, kind of place, the service and the staff are fantastic, the wraps are cooked right in-front of your eyes, on a large burner behind the counter, with all their fresh ingredients laid out for you to see, which affords the place that fresh street-food vibe. They also stock a wide range of greek sodas, I recommend you avoid the grape juice flavoured soda which I ordered, as it only ends up tasting like carbonated prune juice.. unless of course, that's your thing (eeeeeeek!). Luckily for me, my pita was flavoursome enough to overpower that foul prune juice after-taste. I ordered the the Kalamaras ($8.90); which is a thick pita delightfully packed with lightly grilled Haloumi, Spanish onion, tomato and chips, as well as a generous dollop of tzatziki (I could write a whole review on how deliciously creamy the Tzatziki was, with it's strong kick of garlic). My partner ordered the Baba Yianni - lamb pita ($8.90), which he equally raved about in terms of flavours and how well they worked together. I could not recommend this place enough, it's a real treat for Vegetarians and meat-eaters alike!

Traditional Gyradiko has opened up in Rosebery!!!!…read more I've heard about this place out in Bexley but since that's a bit of a trek...never made it out there. Well hot damn I'm so glad it just opened up out this way. You can get takeaway or eat in...if you eat in you can bring the whole family as there's plenty of space. They serve alcohol too...what's not to like? You can get a gyro for $9, and if you want chips and a drink just tack on $5...can you say value?!? They have other dishes, but some weren't available yet like their burgers (I will eat you...maybe not now...but I will eat you.) I got the pork gyro and it was fan-fuggin-tastic. Tender meat and their chips are really really good...they must sprinkle the good stuff on them. They also make their own sauces, and I loved their aioli. Will definitely be back to get more gyro goodness as well as trying their platters.

We both ordered a plate which came with crispy, pork cooked to perfection. If you enjoy crackling, get the pork! Side of tasty chips, fresh greek salad, good sized portion of tzatziki and AMAZING pita bread. The small platter cost $16 including a soft drink and the portion size was more than enough for me. The staff were also friendly and chatted to all of the customers who came through. Plenty of seating as well as being a take away shop. Will definitely be going back for a gyro!

Kefi Souvlaki & Pizza Bar - Holding onto temptation on the train ride home. That did not last!

Kingsgrove, I am pleased you've stepped up the bar (yes, a fair few notches) in the Sydney foodie…read morescene. Thank you very much. It was Halloween, and I was having a mad night out with friends in the North Shore. Round about 8pm, I was on the train heading home, and all of a sudden realising that I had no sweet treats at home to hand out in case any of my neighbours went "trick or treating" and wanted some sweets. I was not in the mood for any tricks whatsoever. This is where my local Woolworths came to the rescue, and feeling a little peckish, I was in the mood for a soulvaki. Thankfully my Greek fanfare was found at Kefi's Soulvaki & Pizza Bar, right near Kingsgrove train station, and right next door to the Greek Tavern with the same name. The pace was frantic, yet relaxed. Who was to argue...it was a hot, Friday halloween in the air kind of night. Order at the counter maccas style, and wait for your name to be called. In the meantime, the charcoal oven in the open plan, open view (nice to see) kitchen was ultra hot. It was fun watching many workers assembling the food. Went for the Lamb Souvlaki ($8), and needless to say I was impressed, although my name was mispronounced. I feel in love with the freshness. Every ingredient was fresh, and the souvlaki tasted amazing. The letdown was the filling and value for money factor. Sadly, this mini feast did not fill me up, and normally a mini-kebab would. I even started to attack it on my two short train station train ride home, and by the time of alighting from the train, my treat was gone and that empty feeling lingered for far too long. Although the food is amazing here, the filling factor is not cool. Sorry Kefi.

It wasn't as good as I remembered. The pork belly was slightly tough, and there wasn't as much salad. The ricotta calzone wasn't great either. Will give them another go in a couple of weeks. Hopefully they were just having an off day.
