For additional context: we went to Markoff's in 2024 and honestly left frustrated. It was so…read moreovercrowded that we watched every single jump scare happen to the group in front of us, so nothing surprised us. This year we booked Halloween Day because the website said it was their least busy day, and we wanted to see if a quieter night would fix it. Two tickets for the Forest Trail and the Town Path were $180, and it's an hour and 20 minute drive for us, so we had pretty high hopes.
AMBIANCEWalking in, I could tell right away that things were different from 2024, and I love that they keep switching it up. Parking had a small line that moved fast, and then there were two huge bonfires in the middle that everybody could hang around. Super nice touch. The DJ was also a great addition. He talked all night, called people's numbers for each attraction, and gave shoutouts to costumes he spotted, which kept the whole place lively. There was even a $20 game where you climb a pole and try to cross a rotating cylinder to hit a buzzer for a jackpot. It was really fun to watch, but I'm pretty sure it's rigged, and the jackpot only grew by a dollar per player, which isn't much of an incentive. My one wish was more entertainment throughout the night in the main area, because we wanted something to hang around for.
WAIT TIMESHonestly, there was no wait. We got there at 8 p.m. and our number was called within five minutes of walking in. You can go anytime after your number is called, just not before, and even if you do have to wait, there are vendors and bonfires to keep you busy. The Forest Trail took us about an hour, and the Town Path took about 30min.
FOODSoo many options! There was a local baked goods spot, a Mexican spot, a waffle spot, separate stands for alcohol and hot drinks, and a main food stand with smash burgers, chili fries, and chili dogs. The hot donuts were the best thing there, hands down. They were warm and tasted like funnel cake. I got a hot chocolate and was so happy it was milk-based instead of watery. It was really good, even at $8 a cup. The burgers were just okay.
SERVICEPretty much everyone was welcoming, and the actors were friendly too. There was one exception. The woman scanning tickets for the Town Path got a big attitude with me. We walked up and she told us to back up because she was giving a group spoilers, and then said that another group was in front of us anyway. I told her they had actually let us go ahead of them, and she snapped back that she was telling us to back up. I explained again that I understood, but that she'd said we skipped them when we hadn't. She apologized after that and was nice for the rest of the night, but it really shouldn't have started with an attitude.
THE FOREST TRAIL (haunted house)The setup was really cool. You can tell a lot of thought went into the sets & the physical build. The pacing was good at first, but it fell apart as we went. People were running up behind us & the group in front kept causing a traffic jam, so we ended up right on top of them & saw the scares before they got to us. And when an actor scares one group, they don't always have time to reset before the next one, so we missed a bunch of scares. A few employees along the route pacing groups would make a huge diff.
The scares themselves were mediocre for us. Twice an actor said things like "Oh, you saw me!" or "Normally people don't look back," which kind of says it all. We did get a couple of really good jump scares, but I think this one is better for teenagers or people who scare easily.
THE TOWN PATH (hayride)We had higher expectations for this one. You're told very little about it on purpose. the hayride holds around 25-30 people. Here's the thing, though: it just drives you to another haunted house, a shorter one. The pacing was actually better, since there's a line halfway through that re-spaces groups (I wish the Forest Trail had that), but the scares were even less impressive. Everyone on the ride was talking afterward about how we expected to stay on the hayride and be driven through the haunted house, with people scaring us from the sides and above. It's open air, so they could have done so much with that. There were also a lot of buildings & parts of the landscape that went totally unused, & a lot of stretches where we just walked with no scares at all. It felt like a waste of great potential.
PRO TIPNobody told us what order to go in, and it's only mentioned in the fine print: do the Town Path FIRST. It's the weaker of the two, so if you do the haunted trail first, the Town Path ends up feeling 10x less exciting.
VERDICTI love the atmosphere, the food, & that there was no waiting, & I really do appreciate that they change things up every year. But as a couple in our late 20s, the scares just weren't at the level we needed to feel like we got our money's worth for $180 & the drive. We won't be back for Halloween, but we might check out their Christmas attractions.
