I was walking around Ludlow trying to find somewhere to pick up a pair of sandals, and not having much luck -- saw some shoes in the window of this place so figured I'd at least stop in. Well, I didn't get any sandals, but 45 minutes later I happily walked out of there with sheepskin boots, a pair of alpaca socks, some knitted wool mittens, and a lot more knowledge about sheepskins, rug making, and how to choose sheepskin boots. I probably would've left with more if I hadn't been called away for something. Greta is really great - so thorough and helpful, but not in a "sales-pitchy" way. If you are cold and are craving some Minnetonka moccasins or sheepskin slippers then this is the place to go. This get warm themed Nordic style store features all sorts of things to keep you warm. There are tons of knit sweaters, scarves, and hats made out of lots of different types of wool and yarn. The shoe selection is pretty extensive as well. You can get lots of shearling sheepskin shoes, boots, slippers, clogs, and even hats! One thing that kinda creeped me out was the amount of various fur rugs that were hanging from the ceiling. They were all sorts of colors. These things are nice, but I wouldn't want one in my home. They also have all sorts of patterned floor rugs and various linen products. If you're looking for super warm, well-made winter gear, this is the place! I don't think their website does a good job of portraying the variety of items they sell. I especially loved the "slippers" they sell that are brightly colored and go up to about the mid-calf area...I can't remember what they are called, I had never heard of them before. But they were SO comfortable and beautiful, for only $17.50! What really got my attention was the manager, Gretta. She was so helpful both times I went into the shop, but not pushy or obnoxious. Today when I bought my sister's Christmas gift she was just SO appreciative for my business, which means a lot to me. And she even gift wrapped it for FREE! What a sweet woman. In the other review of Clifton's The Hansa Guild, a lot was said about all the things to keep you warm in the winter time. I stopped in during the summer time (yesterday) and did not see much of the aforementioned apparel and accessories that would be out of season here in July, although they do sell the Minnetonka Moccasins year-round. The Hansa Guild looked to be mostly women's apparel and accessories, and they have actually been named "Best Apparel" in Cincinnati by someone this year, according to a little sign I saw inside or on the door. They had a ton of long, full-length dresses (my mother says they were "India print"), as well as many skirts and a lot of hats. I also saw rugs and blankets (which I guess means they do carry some winter items after all), and I even saw some stuffed animals near one of the front windows. One of the main brands I noticed they sell, besides the Minnetonka Moccasins that is, was Adini. I really liked the extremely friendly employee (possibly the owner) who approached us--well, probably more my mother than me--because she was more than willing to help, yet not overly pushy like at some stores. On the whole, I think The Hansa Guild is a nice place to shop even though it smelled weird/bad, although I am really confused with how you can access their website six ways (hansaonline.com, hansa-online.com, hansashop.com, hansa-shop.com, hansastore.com, and hansa-store.com). read more

I would give more stars if I were only reviewing the high quality moccasins they sell. If that were the case it might even be 5 stars, because the moccasins are extremely well made. Unfortunately the sheepskin slippers leave a little to be desired. I bought almost a dozen pair of the slippers on my last visit to Cincinnati because I noticed a lot of the "office girls" where I work tend to prefer wearing these while sitting at their desks and I thought it would make a nice "gift." The girls were excited when I handed them out but that excitement went away quickly. One girl asked me if I had kept the receipt, because she wanted me to return hers. Within a week, two others had asked where I had bought the slippers and why. Apparently they were less than satisfied. The whole situation left me very uncomfortable and embarrassed. There is nothing worse than giving an unwanted gift. read more

This means that they carry some of the most unique items in the city such as hats, women's apparel, accessories, moccasins, sheepskin boots, wool sweaters, handwoven tapestries and rugs. Like other businesses in Clifton, what keeps me coming back to Hansa at least once a year is the friendly, knowledgeable service. The owner remembers us, remembers what we like, points us to things we might enjoy, and in general is extremely friendly without being pushy. While the prices keep it from being a more frequent destination, I've found the merchandise to be sturdy (and warm.) In my last visit, we stopped by to talk to the owner about suggestions for resoling a pair of boots my wife had purchased a few years ago. She recommended two shoe repair businesses (which, alas, were unable to do the work) as well as a DIY repair (which worked just fine.) In the meantime, I found a hat for a Christmas present. The owner let me know that the particular line I was looking at ran small for its size, and helped me choose one which would be a better fit. All in all, it's a cozy store with an enthusiastic and friendly owner. read more

The Hansa Guild is unfortunately a browse only store for me. The focus of their products are high quality moccasins and other sheep skin goods. When you walk in, the smell of leather hits your nose, pleasant and inviting unless you're a vegan. the prices for anything I've wanted to buy has always been far to high for me to justify but I love to walk in and touch all the products, run my hands through the wool, try on hats and read all the posters on the wall by the door. read more

The store has really cool items in it, from around the world. I purchased a pair of mocassins many years ago, that have only now started to come apart (with MUCH wear!). But my most recent experience was to buy my husband a summer hat. We purchased a winter hat here several years ago, and remembered their great hat selection. We went in and he started trying things on. The amazing woman who works there immediately approached and started helping us. First she asked what he was looking for, and what his intended purpose of the hat would be. She asked what colors he usually wore- and really evaluated what would be the best choices for him. As hubby tried things on- the lady would tell him very bluntly if it looked good or bad (much appreciated!). The best part, though, was she would explain WHY it looked bad: too tall in the crown elongated his face, the point of his chin would look better with a crease at the top. She showed us both the pricey ones- while explaining they were the more expensive... but mainly tried to steer us towards the more reasonable/moderately priced hats. When hubby chose his hat- she explained the history of the type of hat, where it is made- in general very helpful and informative! She made us feel great about the choice made. I bought a Carnelian bracelet with a heart on it. This bracelet is extremely energetic! I love it. I wanted another one in a different shape and the owner said they were sold out but to check back in a couple of weeks. She was also very good with my two children, and I can't wait to go back and get another one of these bracelets. It took me two weeks to research and find which store it was from. I wanted to track it down because if you know anything about stones and their healing properties, you know what I mean when I say it was very energetic and had good energy coming from it. read more
