One of the best things about this place is simply walking around and letting the inspiration come to you! I ended up buying three random trophy stands for sculptures I'm working on, and all three together were only 15 cents! The prices are amazing. You're welcome to donate while checking out, and you can also pay what you feel is fair based on your budget and what you think the item is worth. They do provide a suggested price when you check out, so it doesn't feel like an uncomfortable haggling situation. Whether you're looking for supplies for a craft night with friends, working on your own projects, or just want to browse and get inspired, this is a great place to visit. We chose to have them pickup and drop-off, cuz we don't have a truck or anyway to do it ourselves. If you do, you can do that also. As I was sitting this morning knitting, I got to thinking about how far I've come. I've been…read moreknitting for about 25 years and crocheting since I was 11 years old--my sister-in-law taught me how to crochet. For years, I stuck with the basics--blankets, scarves, and simple patterns. I would look at all the beautiful sweaters, socks, and tops, read through the patterns, and then skip right over them if I saw stitches like intarsia, short rows, or knit one below. Then it hit me--if you don't jump in and try new techniques, you're never going to make those beautiful things. I realized I was limiting myself by being afraid of what I didn't know. So I decided to go for it. I signed up for the sweater and sock class at Hank's, learning two new things at the same time--yep, I was like, "let's do this!" The support there has been amazing. The staff and other knitters are so encouraging. Even when I made the same mistake ten times, no one ever got frustrated--they were always there to help. And guess what... I DID IT! I made a hoodie for my son, and he loved it. Seeing how happy he was made me so proud--and now I need to make one for my other son! And if I need help, I know they'll be there with open arms. I have grown so much in my knitting because of the encouragement from Hank's staff and the community there. I've also made so many knitting friends through their events--especially Fiber Night, which they hold the last Friday of every month. It's so much fun, along with their trunk shows and just spending time in the shop knitting and talking. It means so much to have a place where you can go, be yourself, and be surrounded by people who love the same craft you do. The support and welcoming atmosphere at my local yarn store truly make all the difference. So if you're like me--skipping over beautiful patterns because of one "dreaded" stitch you think you can't do--jump. Take that next step. YOU CAN DO IT! I browsed some neat looking skeins of yarn (I did think the price of $15 for enough sock yarn to knit a single adult sock was kinda steep, but the yarn was really pretty and I was in the mindset to spend money) before I noticed a clear cupboard with knitted items and accessories with tags. Since I noticed some were tagged I thought they were all for sale. I opened the doors and started looking through stuff. There was a cool scarf I was hoping to purchase which wasn't tagged, but I didn't realize that initially. I was then approached by two staff members who asked "if they could help me." I asked if anything in the case was for sale. I noticed that they were tense and that the vibes were kind of off, so I said that if they needed me to stop looking through the case I'd step away. They informed me nothing there was for sale and I said okay and stepped away. They told me that there would be items for sale later at a separate event, but I really didn't appreciate the experience as it was. Getting the feeling this place only welcomes a certain type of person and it wasn't me. Which was a bummer, because I was super ready to drop some money. This shop will probably do just fine without my cash but jeez. I don't mind that a shop has rules, but I do think they really could have made a better effort to interact with new customers and make a clearer distinction on which items were for sale and which weren't when I stepped in. The situation could have 100% been avoided and they could have provided a better experience. (Also, if knitted items aren't for sale, why is like 1/4 of the store's displayed items knitted pieces with tags? Super confusing for someone who's been there for the first time, and it's not encouraging to have my first conversation with staff be "those aren't for sale, come back on a weekend." )
