Came here today as part of an Elite Event. Located on the center island on RT 22 in Union, NJ. Counter service with several tables. Seems most do take out at lunch time. Staff was very nice and quick. I had the gyro platter which comes with lettuce, tomato, yellow rice and served with your choice of white sauce or hot sauce( or both ) . Server warned me hot sauce was very hot , but I still asked for extra ( and it was very hot) Food is very tasty. My only complaint was the Gyro pieces were cut very small. I would like them cut a little bigger. This is a great place to stop by if you want something different from the usual fast food places located in the area. read more

Please keep in mind that this is a review ONLY for their wings. I love their platters and would rate those 5/5 all the time. I ordered deliver through GrubHub. I love Halal Guys and order only ever so often. I saw on the menu that they added chicken wings and sauces on the menu so I wanted to try. I ordered the 8 piece. Through GrubHub it came out to about $13. When I got my order, I saw that there were about 5 regular flats and then there were 3 really small, weird looking drums. It looked like they were cut in half. So I took off the flesh of one of them to inspect. Lo and behold, they oddly were. Why would you do that? I gave them a try and the chicken was ok. It was like any regular chicken you can get at like a pizza parlor. You'd just get more bang for your buck at a Chinese take out place though. Wouldn't recommend. read more

Soooooo good. I still love the experience of getting halal guys from a food truck, but this was also great. Drove a half hour to come here. People were very nice and everything was clean. Walked in and saw freshly grilled chicken being prepped. Ordered the small chicken platter with peppers and onion. Wasn't too much rice and a plenty full of chicken, just how I like it. Spacious in location, the restaurant appears clean and all napkins /utensils fully stocked without fuss. With 14 years of experience, the meat platter comes abundantly delicious. While my first few experiences at their "restaurants" weren't so impressive, the last time I came here the platter was as delicious as I remembered it to be out on the street. I ordered a regular sized combo platter which is the larger size of the two options. The gyro meat was hot and perfectly charred on the outside and the lettuce was crisp and pita was fluffy. The chicken and rice were solid, just as tasty as I remember and I doused the entire platter in white sauce and a few slivers of red sauce. For those who haven't tried Halal guys before, ask for their hot sauce sparingly because it's not your average hot sauce these little lines of sauce are lava. Food and drink: Food was nice, fresh, and flavorful, it was just that it felt very greasy for some reason. I expected a shawarma-type meat to be fatty, but when I got a film of fat stuck to the roof of my mouth, it's not a great sensation. Not sure where the issue is, probably the meat wasn't heated enough prior to serving. They do have a running shawarma / vertical spit grill, so perhaps cutting the meat straight out of the grill instead of pulling it out of the bin would improve the texture and temperature. Service: Service was standard. Not bad but not extraordinary either. Value: For the price, I think it's worth visiting. The price is not gonna wow you, but you won't feel ripped off. People are always cutting in line for more white sauce or a dab of hot sauce. I've been to a few Halal Guys, and I'd hardly consider myself a veteran, but I know a few things - at least about what I like. So here are some tips for you: 1) Go. Off. Peak. I've never had a problem getting overloaded with too much meat, sauce, rice, veggies. If you're not getting the size you want, you're hitting the busy hour. 2) Chicken is a little soft on flavor, gyro is a little on the salty side. You decide. Falafel is always a solid choice. 3) Baba ghanoush is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Best anywhere. It's so smoky and perfect texture. I was licking the container and opening it just to sniff it for an hour afterwards. Sides may be $2.99 for a smallish container that isn't even filled all the way up (you might be able to cajole them in that regard, I didn't try), but for this plus a fresh pita to dip into it, what a deal. What a deal. So yeah, the pita is awesome too. 4) Hummus doesn't do it for me over storebought. Sorry, just how it is. Tabouleh is tabouleh, nothing special but nothing bad. 5) I know they're running a new burrito promo, but for the same price as a platter, you get a lot less food. Always get the platter. Always. (It comes with some pita quarters so even if you like the sandwich, get the platter.) Disclosure: I had a Yelp 2 for 1 deal on burritos, so I went that way. Now I've got meat-filled, super-saucy lunches for next week. Exciting. 6) People are friendly. At all the Halal Guys, that stands out. You'll enjoy your service. 7) Final tip: Get the red sauce put on fresh. The packets have preservatives, the fresh stuff doesn't (as far as I'm aware). Get plenty of it before they package your meal. They'll tell you it's super unrealistically hot, but no, it's not ghost pepper hot (1 million scovilles). Maybe on the hot side of habanero (300,000 scovilles), if I had to guess. I've tried the original stand in NYC plenty of times and been to a few of their stores around NJ. I was craving a platter so decided to swing by and get a rice and chicken platter. The staff was friendly and the food was good. My only downside is the temperature of the food. The rice was rather a mix between room temperature and cold. Stopped by today to finally try this place out for lunch. I heard they opened a few months ago and we were in the area so figured we'd try them out. Came in just before 3:00 and there were only a few other people dining. We each decide to go with a small platter since it was a late lunch. We got 1 Combo platter Chicken and Gyro, and 1 Beef Gyro platter. The size was more then enough for lunch and it was really tasty. The lettuce and tomato was fresh, the rice was flavorful, the meat was juicy, and I loved the white sauce... I just think I over did it by asking for extra but that was my fault. On their opening day, long-ass lines were out the door but once I got to the counter, they were all about amazingly fast service with highly-motivated assembly line speed. The Chicken & Gyro Combo Platter is the one to get! It comes with fluffy rice, an okay tomato and lettuce salad, and soft pita bread for $8.79. I mix the meat, rice, salad, and whites sauce up for a tasty, filling combo. They offer a smaller version for a dollar less. Their hot sauce is thick, dark, and legit! Their white sauce helps cool it down and extra on a platter's 50 cents more - do it. Their Baklava's okay and easier to eat when literally handled (a fork doesn't work well) and their hummus is pretty good. I'd skip their Tabbouleh since it's completely missing lemon and needs more bulgur for texture. They have good crinkle-cut fries similar to White Castle's, but crispier. This is my 1st time here and I like to give new places a chance Place was packed Menu is simple Staff was friendly So I decided to try the falafel platter .... comes with rice , pita, lettuce and tomato. Falafel were pretty good. The rest- rice etc was eh. There are 4 sauces... a white sauce ( made with mayo) a red sauce ( which is not hot sauce that I like- it's a pasty super hot sauce) , a bland tzatzaki sauce and a barbecue sauce ( that I didn't try) I would come back to have the falafel as a side - they sell them two for $1. I would try their hummus , their gyro sandwiches. I doubt I would get a platter again because most of it I don't eat. read more

I've been enjoying the Halal Guys for the past decade. In my college years, we regularly waited for up to an hour for a plate, often well into the early morning hours. Now that they are less than 10 minutes from my house, they are my favorite place again! Welcome to Union, may your stay be long and prosperous!
