NRA Basic Range Officer Safety course 2014
Andres D.

This review is based on my most recent experience as an enrolled student of The Gun Doctor's NRA Basic Pistol and Illinois Concealed Carry License course. First and foremost it is your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. We protect ourselves, family and loved ones through gun safety and professional training. Since the early 70's and to this day, The Gun Doctor is family-owned and operated as a full service firearms dealer. Also providing in house gunsmithing services such as repair, restoration, refinishing and custom fabrications. When I happen to stumble upon The Gun Doctor's facebook post that they were now offering course training and certificates for the Illinois Concealed Carry I immediately signed up. For the last decade I have been actively working in parts of Chicago's southside neighborhoods that have been featured on the news for shootings and gang violence. Rather then being a statistic I felt as an educated individual to practice my Second Amendment Right with the help of professional instructors and course training via The Gun Doctor. Let me say this first. I have been to many other firearm shops and The Gun Doctor is my favorite. For those who are well invested in this hobby I assure you The Gun Doctor has treated me with kindness and respect as a beginner to this industry. The course instructors (Mike & Joe) are family guys just like anyone else with a massive amount of knowledge. I haven't set foot in a classroom setting since my college days and the 16 hours flew by quickly. The course is NOT about sitting down taking notes while the instructors lecture. They give real life situations backed up by a powerpoint presentation. My favorite part of the course was the hands on questions and group interactions with my fellow classmates. The course atmosphere was family oriented with students ranging from both male and female ages roughly 30 years to 70 years old. The course training broken up into 2 day classes included in the range firing pistols, lectures, safety and body mechanics while carrying. My fellow classmates and I were a real team showing comradery. This was an eye-opening experience into what I imagine soldiers develop in the military with one another. Upon completion of the course we graduated with our NRA Basic Pistol and Conceal Carry Training certificate. I want everyone to understand that Gun Safety is everyones business and proper use is only developed through continued education.

Great customer service, and quality workmanship. I was able to speak directly to the gunsmith about my stippling needs. The work is very detailed and fine. The turn around time was faster than the online options and more cost effective.

Communications were handled via email and everything went as smooth as it could. Bernadette and Jeff are some of the friendliest people that I've met in this community and I will certainly be doing business with them again in the future. One thing to note - some FFL's will start the waiting period at the time of sale as described by the Illinois State Police as it relates to gun sales and transfers. Some FFL's will start the waiting period as soon as you fill out the Form 4473. It's neither here nor there as to who is doing this correctly but at the end of the day, your FFL policies is what you end up following. North American Firearms starts the clock upon filling out the 4473 so just keep this in mind. Best bet is to make the online purchase, head over to fill out the 4473, and by the time your firearm is received by them your background check should be clear and you're good to go.

I had been a loyal member of Range USA since before the company even changed its name. I was a…read moremember in good standing, with my credit card on file and automatically charged each month for my membership. When I learned that I needed surgery, I went to the range and specifically told the employees at the front desk that I needed to cancel my membership because I would be unable to walk properly--or visit the range--for at least three to four months while recovering. I also sent an email to Range USA Corporate explaining that I was having surgery, would be out for an extended period, and wanted my membership canceled. Three months later, after recovering enough to get around again, I returned to the range with a very important client who had been looking forward to going shooting with me. Imagine my embarrassment when, standing there with my client, I was informed that I had been "red flagged" and was barred from ALL Range USA locations. I was stunned. I asked what "red flagged" meant and what I had possibly done to warrant being banned. No one at the range could--or would--give me an explanation. I was simply told to contact Range USA Corporate. So I did. After FIVE emails asking what I had done to deserve being suspended, I finally received a response stating that I had too many "chargebacks." Chargebacks? I didn't even know what they were referring to. There is an important part of this story that apparently no one at Range USA bothered to investigate. While I was at home recovering from surgery, someone obtained my credit card information and began making fraudulent charges. My credit card company contacted me about the suspicious activity and immediately canceled the card. Of course they did--that is exactly what any responsible credit card company should do when fraud is suspected. Apparently, however, Range USA continued attempting to charge that canceled card. When those charges didn't go through, instead of contacting a longtime customer and simply saying, "Fred, we're having a problem processing your card. Can you please provide us with updated payment information?" Range USA apparently decided that banning me from every one of its locations was the appropriate response. When I contacted my credit card company and asked about the "chargebacks" Range USA claimed were the problem, they could not explain what Range USA was referring to. I returned to the range hoping someone could help me resolve the situation, but once again I was told that I had to deal with Corporate. My subsequent communications with Corporate were short, abrupt, and offered virtually no meaningful explanation or opportunity to resolve what appears to be a simple misunderstanding. The message I ultimately received was essentially that the decision was final and that I was banned for life. I am still shocked by the way this was handled. I had been a good and loyal customer for more than a year. I had never caused a problem at the range and had never been told of any issue with my membership or conduct. I canceled my membership because I was undergoing surgery--not because of any dispute with Range USA. Then, while I was recovering, my credit card was compromised and canceled for legitimate security reasons. If Range USA believed money was owed, why didn't someone simply contact me? A phone call or email saying, "We attempted to process your card and it was declined; please contact us with updated payment information," could have resolved this entire situation in minutes. Instead, a longtime customer was apparently labeled, embarrassed in front of a client, barred from every Range USA location, and given little opportunity to explain what actually happened. I am extremely disappointed in the way Range USA handled this matter. More than anything, I am disappointed that no one seemed willing to listen, investigate the circumstances, or give a loyal customer the courtesy of a reasonable explanation. I sincerely hope I am the only customer who has experienced something like this. A company should certainly protect itself from legitimate payment disputes, but it should also make a reasonable effort to distinguish between someone intentionally refusing to pay and a longtime customer whose credit card was canceled because it had been compromised. Those are two very different situations, and customers deserve to be treated accordingly. Fred Pfeifer 847-452-9075 fredp@manfredgroup.com

Bought targets for $1/ea which is also fine. Clean, nice range. The folks there, including the gentleman at the front door, were very polite. I was hesitant to go to Mega Sports based on some of these negative reviews herein but my experience was completely opposite. Look, there policy is a FOID card to enter. So be it. Illinois is a pain and requires FOID cards. In fact, you can't buy guns/ammo without so what's the point of going to these types of stores in IL without a FOID if you can't buy anything anyway without a FOID. I mention because this was an argument of many. I am happy to go back to this place. Range is perfect particularly for the competitive price. I did not price check guns or ammo (no time, no need at that moment). Try the place for yourself, I think you will be pleased.

Mega Sports has got to have the most unfriendly, bad-attitude driven employees I've ever encounters. Want to rent a pistol that you may want to purchase? Expect an attitude. Want to look at a $1200 Kimber to possibly purchase? Expect an attitude. Have any questions about anything? Yep! Expect an attitude. And their shooting range? Wear a gas mask. I doubt those filters (if any) have been cleaned in the past 10 years. Take the time to drive to any other range and you'll be glad you did. It's a shame, too, as they have one of the largest gun inventories around. I'm guessing this range is corporate owned, because anyone I know that would own a business where the customer comes last, wouldn't allow it for a moment. Everyone would be fired, and new hires would be trained to realize that the only reason they have a job there... IS FOR THE CUSTOMERS!
