We went to this restaurant based upon reviews that we seen on yelp it was a cool looking place when we got inside we were seated right away however our service was very poor it took us 15 minutes for anyone to approach our table and ask us for a drink order then It took another 15 minutes for them to come back and ask if we wanted any appetizers we ordered our main dish with her appetizers if you did come out quickly but the service while we had the food was still very poor we noticed other tables that we're getting better service so I think it was this the matter of one poor staff member. I really wanted to like this place with a cute name like The Grumpy Troll but what I had here was pretty bland and underseasoned. I have had better cheese curds. The breading was not really interesting and pretty bland. The fish tacos were also quite bland and too heavy. Maybe their other items are good but I was really underwhelmed. I was intown for the weekend, a group of us went here for dinner one night and then lunch the next day. Really good service friendly and fast. Everyone enjoyed all of their food. Those waffle fries - YUM! Some of us had burgers, real good! Fish fry, also very good. Salmon salad - thumbs up! Blts really fresh! Great beers! A couple weeks ago a local parent committee went to Grumpy for our annual meeting/get together over dinner. It was not a good experience! Stopped on our way home from Cave of the mounds. The food was pretty good, the service was terrible. My husband ordered a beer on tap and it took forever to get it. We ordered our food and asked for our soup to come out before the entrees. That didn't happen. I think our food had been sitting for a while because the bottom of my bun was super soggy. It's not my first Grumpy Troll visit, so I knew it was good stuff. I opened the menu and found the offer for a tshirt and beer for $10. Heck, I can't buy a beer or a tshirt for $10 at some places and the sunflower was cute. It came with the sunflower ale beer which was lighter for an ale and while not quite citrusy, had a good flavor. The grumpy chops were crunchy and had a good Gonzalo cheese dipping sauce which was excellent and I missed half of it while I was too busy Yelping to eat. We went on a Friday, so even though the menu looked great-I needed a good Wisconsin fish fry and the Grumpy Troll did not disappoint me. The fried cods came in almost a tube shape which made dipping in the tarter sauce perfect, the coleslaw had a good creamy flavor, neither too sweet or too bland. The waffle fries were fine. They were crispy and very lightly seasoned, but the rest of my food was excellent enough that I didn't care if I skipped some. The service was great. When you walk in the front door you do need to weave past the bar through the restaurant to get to the hostess table, but she also processes transactions and shows off fun collectible tshirts, pint glasses and bumper stickers. (FYI we have a Grumpy Troll pint glass a few years old that hasn't faded and is still serving us drinks quite often in rotation. Mine does go through the dishwasher too). So if you're strolling the Main Street of Mt Horeb or just looking for a fun place check it out. Most items are approximately $10 which makes good pretty affordable. read more

Wasn't my favorite place. Likely no reason to go back, unless they bring the pizza back. It's hard to write a negative review on a place during COVID and all the restrictions that are in place. Some places do great with it though and others don't. I would rate this 2 -3 stars if times were different. I'm being generous with the 4, due to that. Hoping management or owners see this and change some things up. I was really disappointed they weren't doing pizza anymore, due to Covid. Pizza should be something that's easy to do with Covid. They never address that they have stopped pizza for the time being they just don't mention it. Weird to me. Put it on the website. The staff doesn't even act like they want to be there. I would say they need some managerial direction. Not sure if being blah is part of the grumpy persona, but at least make it known if it is, vs just thinking the help hates life. I got a BLT and it was lackluster (there can be good BLT's trust me) my fiancé had the rueben sandwich and he said it was good. We also had the grump chip appetizer. Yeah, man! This place has everything; the vibe, the food and the brews! We stopped in on a drizzly Saturday looking for a warm up and bump. The featured soup was seafood chowder and it was delish! My husband, who is not a soup enthusiast, loved it! The service was very attentive, a trick given how crowded it became while we were there. Back again and this time we ate dinner. The beer cheese soup is a must get for anyone visiting from outside of wi. Creamy, and I think there was sausage in it. The nachos were good, nothing ground breaking there. The burger was excellent, sourced from a local farm, as is most of the things on the menu. No frozen sysco patty meat here. Craft brewery with great variety and tasty food! Hubby and I stopped by late (8:30pm) on a Friday night. We were seated quickly and were happy they had the Brewers game on at the bar. I was impressed with the quality and variety of menu options. Definitely more than just pub food. I enjoyed my salmon salad and appreciated the gluten friendly menu options. My husband loved the Mac n cheese bites and the Cajun chicken. The Grumpy Mary was a great Wisconsin style Bloody and the beer as well. Lastly, Angela our server was exceptional. This restaurant is housed in the old 1916 Mt. Horub Creamery building. The interior was modern and clean. Clean is paramount to getting five stars from me. The food exceeded my expectations for what I call "bar-food". I ordered their homemade Grumpy Troll Root Beer. I wasn't fond of it. It was quite a strong root beer flavor and a bit sweet, but what do I know? I'm not a pop drinker. The Erik the Red Brat was fabulous, as was the Sweet Potato Tots served extra crispy, at my request, and their housemade chipotle ranch dipping sauce! Again, found this place on Yelp. So I looked up the menu and my eyes immediately found the soft pretzel. A ONE AND A HALF POUND soft pretzel mind you. I was sold. So away we went. There was a wait, but that was okay. We looked over the menu while were waiting. When we were seated, we were ready to go. When they brought that pretzel out - well - it was - amazing. Very tasty and we enjoyed the dipping trio that it comes with. My kids each got a turkey BLT (minus the "T"), my husband a burger (I forget which variety) and I had the reuben. En route to House on the Rock, we stopped here to build up our strength and drink a little liquid courage (boyfriend is afraid of dolls, and there's a freaking doll carousel at House on the Rock). Foodwise, we had started with the grump chips which were good and I enjoyed a half corned beef sandwich and chicken enchilada soup. I highly recommend trying any of these selections. The portions of the food were above expectations, a couple of us had to take the rest of our food to go. My wife and I have gone three times so far and thoroughly enjoy the bar/restaurant and décor. Each time has been a good experience though wait times can be long at times on a Friday or Saturday evening. The Friday fish fry and Saturday prime rib are very good though I wish the fish fry had something other than cod or bluegill. Walleye or better yet perch would make it a standout dinner. As a brewery, they have a good selection. My favorite - Maggie (an American double/Imperial IPA) - is often out so I usually have the Hoppa Loppa which is a nice IPA in itself. They have a good amber ale as well. Service has always been good and the bartender is very attentive and helpful with samples and answering questions. As others have mentioned, the entry can be confusing as what one would think of as the main door coming in off the street actually is not so when you do come in that door, you have to walk through the restaurant to get to the hostess. Awkward the first time we went but now we know were to go. Overall, a fun place with a nice selection of beers and good food. read more

I would have given this place 5 stars because the food and drinks were amazing BUT the hostess, who is your first touch point when you enter, was very rude. She never smiled and couldn't be bothered to give any direction to what we were supposed to do during our wait. The wait was 30 minutes, which isn't a big deal, but I had to ask about where to go for drinks and where to sit while we waited with those drinks. The bartender was nice...ish, I've had nicer bartenders. My recommendation for this establishment is to teach your staff that every customer is a gift and should be treated as such. Winning customers is easier now than ever before...you just have to treat the customers better than your competition. Restaurant has a lot of character. Our waitress Sandy seemed very experienced and provided friendly service. Enjoyed the grilled salmon summer salad, but I asked them to prepare my salmon on a clean pan instead of on the grill. This salad and especially its dressing were very tasty; lots of junk (cranberries, gorgonzola, apples and slivered almonds). My salad came with a surprise corn muffin, but I didn't taste it. If you're not from the area, be sure to stroll up and down Main St looking for troll sculpture. This place is decent but i think they are going through an identity crisis. Are they a pizza joint or a pub and grill.. or both.. or neither. As you would expect with any beer hause, the food is decent and the beer selection good. The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and all in all they do most things well. The ambiance is OK, but the layout makes no sense. the front door isn't the front door, and you need to walk through the whole place to the side door to get seated. Be prepared to wait as seating is limited. The main gripe I have with this place outside of the wonky layout is the price. I know what they are doing, trying to niche market a unique experience in the Troll capital of the world... but they are charging city prices without city-quality food. They are going for the tourists and forgetting the core customers live in town. Lower them down just a smidge and put the seating desk by the real front door, and you will get 5 stars from me! read more

Who would of thunk it, a brewery in Mount Horeb. I wouldn't of been in Mount Horeb if it wasn't for the mustard museum. Speaking of mustard, Grumpy Troll serves mustard from the mustard museum with their food. Ok the beer, that was the reason I was at grumpy troll and I am happy to report that it was some very tasty brew. The beer flight offered 8 tasty samples... 8 thats a pretty pretty pretty good deal! Stopped at the grumpy troll on a WI day trip with 3 girlfriends for my birthday, on the way to Madison. Lunch was delicious; prime rib sandwich & sweet potato tots were amazing! And all the beers we tried were so good, especially the free one I got for my bday! Our server Dawn, was so helpful, fun & knowledgable about the menu & beers. Plus she had really cool blue glasses! .... Also I need to shout out to all the staff for going above & beyond... After our delightful lunch, and on our way out the door my friend passed out & had a small seizure. Everyone quickly came to our assistance, they called 911 to get medical help there, they helped keep us & all the other customers calm & they helped assure us everything was going to be ok. A huge, huge thank you to all the staff, and to the local EMTs for everything you did for us that day! Btw...My girlfriend is doing really good! We make it a point to stop at The Grumpy Troll any time we're in the area. We love the cozy vibe, beer selection, and large menu. The only time I've been disappointed in a while was when I ordered the turkey avocado wrap, which tasted exactly like I could've made it in my own kitchen for a fraction of the price. The Uff-Da giant pretzel is a crowd pleaser & truly giant. Burgers/comfort food is definitely their menu sweet spot but I've also been pleased with some of the entree salads. Two lunches in two days at the Grumpy Troll. We tasted the Spetznaz. It's an imperial stout with note of chocolate and coffee. Also, we had the Sunflower farmhouse ale. It didn't disappoint. The sourness was just enough to make the brew refreshing even on a cold day. The Harvest Moon is almost like a full-bodied Pilsners served at the many supper clubs in Wisconsin. For the first lunch, we had the house salad with the specialty house-made cucumber ranch. They dressing was satisfyingly refreshing. It was paired with the beer cheese soup. The soup has a bit of zest added by andouille sausage. On the return, we had the turkey avocado wrap with house-made grumpy fries. The fries are really seasoned and "cheesed" potato chips that come with a Gorgonzola dipping sauce. These were tasty. The wrap was good and my bride even commented on how good the tortilla is. I had the Grevling burger. All meat is locally sourced from vendors in town. The burger was very tasty as was the beat. The seasonal vegetable medley was unique and satisfying.
