We made a reservation here for my boyfriend's bday for 430PM for a party of 3. Upon arriving, we were the first guests of the evening at the restaurant. We were seated at a table right away and given rolls by the waitress, who was very attentive and friendly throughout our experience. I ordered the Chicken French (a Rochester specialty, I found out after) with a ranch-dressed salad. My boo ordered the 16oz Angus strip steak, medium rare. His mom who came along got the 8oz char grilled Angus filet. Our meals came out in around 30 minutes. The Chicken French was decent. I've never had this dish before I dined here. The lemon flavor was a little overwhelming for me. But the chicken was cooked very nicely, it was juicy and delicious. It was also plated nicely. I enjoyed my salad - the veggies were all fresh. And the rolls were soft and tasty. My bf really liked his steak, it was cooked to his liking. I sampled a bit and it was tender and flavorful. I think the all the fried onions were a bit over the top and the pomme frites didn't seem to hold their crispiness. His mom lives right next to the Grove House and has been coming here for years, since before the ownership change. She always gets the 8oz filet here and it remains her favorite to this day. She offered me a bite and it was amazing! The presentation was very nice with this dish, and it was great all around. I hope to visit the Grove House again soon! I'd like to sample their other dishes and their appetizers! The location is convenient for us as we visit his mom quite often, so we should be stopping in again. read more

Heard so many wonderful things about Bernards Grove..... tried to eat there a few months ago, but the wait was too long. This time we got smart and called to make a reservation, and when they answered the phone they said "The Grove house". It's surprised me!! I was informed that new owners took it over a month ago, and that the sous chef is now the head chef and he is very familiar with the menu, so nothing has changed. I made sure to look at all the yelp photos for "Bernard Grove ". I was sold on the calamari appetizer! And disappointed in the amount, I received versus what I was expecting, based on photos from past ownership. It tasted great, but it was a scarce. My salad came out and you can tell that the cucumbers were cut days ago... They were Slimy-gelatin like cucumbers!! And I was shocked that they were even served. I could tell they were disgusting just as soon as the server put the plate down. I can't believe she didn't pull them in advance. But when I brought it to her attention, her response was so lackadaisical also sarcastic. I was disappointed in her level of care. My husband and I both ordered the same meal, the shrimp and mussels over white wine linguine. Every single mussel my husband ate was extremely sandy and crunchy . He did not enjoy his meal. I enjoyed mine However. The white wine broth was delightful, and I only experienced one Sandy mussel. New owners should renovate their bathrooms. Besides the fact that they're so dark and outdated, they clearly haven't dusted. The cobwebs coming from the light fixtures and the fire alarms are plentiful. Also I slipped on the rug in front of the sink. They could use a non slip pad underneath. New owners, you need a fresh take on this place. Show you care, make it better. read more

I am so disappointed that the owners of the Grove House (formerly Bernard's Grove) have not kept up the standards of the former owners. It's so sad that a longtime favorite restaurant is no longer our "go-to". Note that one no longer needs reservations on Friday or Saturday nights. I have to conclude that I'm not the only one who doesn't want to eat here. Example: I ordered the crabcake appetizer as my main and asked the cost of a side salad, and was told it was included. Instead of getting the 2 crabcake appetizer, I was served 3 crabcakes and a salad....for $10 more. The crab cakes weren't great, and I had to negotiate with the waitress about the price, which isn't what I expect when dining out. The waitress was sweet, but didn't seem to "get" or ask what I wanted for my dinner. My crab cakes were entirely flaked crab - no chunks. And two of these flaked crab cakes with mango salsa were $18. I've gotten better crab cakes from Aldi - 5 for $5.99. The new owners need to do better and stop taking shortcuts. read more

After my last visit to the Grove House (four weeks ago), I wrote a glowing 5 star review. Last night we visited again, this time with friends. Sad to say, there will be no 5 star review this time. The restaurant was not crowded. There were only a few tables occupied when we got there at 6:00 on a Wednesday night. Yet it took much longer than usual (15 or so minutes!) for our cocktails to arrive, which put somewhat of a damper on our moods. Our moods improved with the appetizers. Wednesday is $1 oyster night, so two of us ordered a dozen each. They were fabulous! The other two ordered soup - one the French Onion, and one the Seafood Bisque. Fantastic as well. Dinner was a different story. Disappointment reigned when the filet I ordered to be cooked rare came to me medium well instead. And also when the 16 ounce king cut prime rib the other three ordered came to the table looking like the smaller 12 ounce queen cut. The waitress insisted that they were indeed the king cut but we were not convinced. We had ordered the king cut many times before and knew how big it should look on the plate. Also, the prime rib was not as flavorful as in the past and none of the food was warm enough. The meat and even the au jus were on the cool side. The appetizers saved the day here (and generated the 3 star rating instead of a more appropriate 2 stars). Otherwise the entire meal would have been a huge disappointment. And when you're spending $300 on dinner for 4, that's a terrible thing to have to say. read more

First time going back since it changed from bernard's. Safe to say we will NOT be going back. They kept everything Almost the same but the quality and taste is much much worse... They want to call themselves and act like a high end restaurant but are FAR from it. Let me explain below. We got there and there were 3 other tables there (was not busy at all) 12 customers total between the 3 tables and us... everything took incredibly long. Which fine. Took forever to even get us our drinks.... Now on to the food.... The shrimp greco was a huge disappointment. It is to have Shrimp stuffed with feta wrapped in bacon. Mine came out with absolutely NO feta. No flavor. The shrimp were small. DEFF NOT something that should cost $18.00. The rolls are plain, bland and have no flavor. Not to mention hard, not warm. Butter was not good... They use to have this cajun strip steak with crispy onions when it was bernards... They now have tried to replace this with no cajun, a cheaper cut of strip steak and still charge $40 for it.... The chicken Marcela , the chicken was tough swimming in the sauce with the entree, the portion size was for a toddler. For the prices they are charging you would think much more of the food. Never. This place was a disappointment. The first time that I returned in a Couple of years after originally experiencing the worst cut of prime rib with 40+% waste. Brought the entire family tonight as I've been bragging about how good the place is for years. Got there at 6:30 and was told that the prime rib we've been waiting for was already gone. Ya know.... Hotel kitchens can go either way. And this one hit it out of the ball park for us. It was late and we were hungry. We ordered mushroom fettuccini..... home run! So yummy! Stragglers came in and out through the night, our waiter mentioned that the chef cooked the buffets for the hotel. Our fettuccine was quality delicious. I've been coming here for years, whenever I'm in town. I have always had a great experience. Some of my favorites: the filet is one of the best I've ever had. The steamed clams are delicious. One of my favorite Rochester dishes is Chicken French, Artichoke French and Veal French (I guess anything French as "French" is apparently a Rochester thing". The new French sauce here is amazing! In the past I wasn't a big fan, I personally thought it was bland. I would get my French at Phillip's European or the Brooke House, but this new chef has got it down. The Chicken and Artichoke French dishes are Amazing!!! I prefer going to old school family owned restaurants. This place has that old school neighborhood vibe with amazing cuisine. Delicious food.... We ate there years ago when it was Bernard's Grove and it was very good. Our experience there tonight was very disappointing. Cocktails came quick and were good. A couple people at our table had the oysters and they were mediocre. The server never came back to take our order till the appetizers were finished at which time we ordered a bottle of wine with dinner. The dinners came the prime rib had good flavor but was tough. I ordered the fillet rare, and when I cut into it was medium well, I sent it back onlynto have the hostess come over and tell me they were redoing it but it was just the lighting in there that made it look dark, to which I replied that was not the case, not only did it look well done but also tasted well done there wasn't even a hint of pink in it. Lastly we had to remind them to bring the wine after our food was already served. When you are spending $300 on a dinner for four I expect more than that. Our experience there last Friday night was very disappointing. I had the oysters and they were quite slimy with almost no meat. On a scale of 1-5 comparison with numerous other places I have had oysters I would give them no more then a 2. The server never came back to take our order till the appetizers were finished at which time we ordered a bottle of wine with dinner. I had the prime rib and it was stringing and had much more fat on it then you usually get with a good cut. Server disappeared for 10-15 minutes each time and the place is not that large. We had to remind them to bring the wine after our food was already served. Lastly I observed one of the staff setting the table next to us. She stared at one of the plates for a about 30 seconds. It obviously had something on it and she proceeded to take her finger and wipe of whatever was on it. When you are spending $300 on a dinner for four I expect more than that. First of all the grove house was always our favorite restaurant to go to for the last twenty five years, although after last night we will never return. The service was horrible, they brought us bread after waiting twenty minutes, and it was stale. After telling our server, it was shrugged off and she didn't return, that's when the four of us walked out, never thought I would walk out of the grove house. We will never return , and that's disappointing considering how often we ate there under the past owners. This was our second attempt to love this place under new ownership, however it will never be the same. read more
