It's convenient (right outside of the lake of the pines front gates). A small clean & very little family owned restaurant. You HAVE to, PARK BEHIND THE BUILDING. Food is good. Customer Service could be more friendly, that's my only issue. They need to smile an and be excited when people come through the door. The last two times we've walked in and just stood there waiting for someone to come out and greet us. To me, Great Customer Service is key. But they did have good food which I appreciate. We will go for the 3rd time and see if their attitudes have changed for the better. It is refreshing to see local businesses aspiring to a higher standard than their surroundings. As a local born and raised here I can honestly say that there isn't much nearby to compare The Grind to, they simply have some of the best burgers that I have ever had, and trust me I've had quite a few. The burgers are big! Very big. The buns are kind of thick, so the amount that they get toasted makes it kind of like a texture gradient when you bite into it, making the burger feel sturdy and soft, becoming just slightly chewier in the center.The first time in to The Grind, I asked for a double because i didn't realize that these were burgers built for vikings, which is a trait I have spent many years in search of. The second time in, they had a new Western BBQ burger which was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spiciness (jalapenos), and also had some kind of a tasty pineapple sauce. The spice levels were just right, it felt balanced. The coffees I had were also pretty good, at the very least better than starbucks. So far I have tried their cold brew, a frappe, and a double espresso. The cold brew honestly was a bit weak, but it was also delivered to me so I may need to try that one again. The frappe was good, they use Torani syrups which is fairly standard (I much prefer places that make their own syrups, it's not that hard! just a suggestion). The double espresso was also good, i didn't catch the brand of coffee they use but it wasn't over-roasted like typical starbucks-esque coffee shops. With my experience as a barista for 2 years and subsequent 8 years of coffee hobbyism, i can say that the double espresso alone was on par to a regular coffee focused shop, though it was a bit strange that their menu doesn't actually list the double espresso (and I was charged for a tea when i asked for one, since that price lines up with what a double espresso should be). Definitely has some interesting vibes since it is upstairs, and over a small bridge that overlooks a nice garden out front. Overall, a great experience, and I will be back to try the mushroom swiss burger, and probably more times in the future. read more

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at The Grind last Sunday (June 22nd). The ABC Burger was by far one of the best hamburgers that I have eaten in years in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. Bright flavors, perfectly cooked medium-rare, crispy bacon, fresh bun and toppings. Service was prompt and friendly. The staff politely and professionally checked on us several time during our meal. We will definitely return! One thing to note, front of The Grind does not face Combie Road. The front of the cafe and the nice outdoor patio is on the north side of the building, via Armstrong Road. read more

Place was MT when i went but 2 kids constantly coming into dinning area checking me out ? No decor very bad seats no backs on the seats. ( i have a bad back ) movie on tv was good no loud music a double plus. Took a long time to get food. Fries were a bit soggy. Burger was good and big but so was the price tag. Over $50 for this includes thr nice tip which i will say i HATE IT WHEN you stand and order and they want a tip before you even sit down ? = 3 stars. Decent burger and hefty price. I have been here many times for lunch, dinner, and after school snacks with my kids and it does not disappoint! Great burgers and flatbread and fries and they have a pita bread with house made tzatsiki sauce not on the menu but you can order it any time that is delicious! My kids love their Italian sodas and lemonades that you can pretty much get in any flavor you want as well as their lattes and chai teas. You can also get smoothies and for the adults they serve beer on tap and wine! They also have a refrigerator with grab and go snacks that are reasonable. The Grind is locally owned and one of the owners is a Bear River HS alumnus and has a room dedicated to the school's sports teams with lots of memorabilia to look at. I need to go back to see if the service has improved. We ordered one coffee a side of fries and a burger. my friend received her burger and her fries. She said the burger was delicious. My coffee I ordered was to have been with almond milk. I received it with out, couldn't find the nice young person to get the milk. So I entered the kitchen and the chef gave me the carton. That was one mark off. Then my fries came after my friend finished her burger. Second mark off. I believe the young person up front should stick around to assist as the one chef in the kitchen obviously was not able to handle the servicing of food. I never saw the young person ever again. Our fries were not very good, a bit greasy and very thin. Also not hot. So, not giving a very nice review. Sorry. The BEST Swiss mushroom beef burger I have EVER eaten! I mean, juice-running-down-to-your elbows good. A gourmet brioche bun that had been thrown on the grill with diced onions, at least a 1/2 lb. perfectly cooked grilled beef burger (did I say juicy?), melted Swiss cheese and a HUGE amount of sautéed mushrooms, add a little mayo and good lettuce. MMMMmmm. Do realize the chef doesn't hurry because it takes a bit longer to get the perfect burger! I also choose a refreshing Italian soda from their dozens of flavors. There is only one problem with The Grind...it's hard to find. It's on the second level of the shops adjoining the Combie Mailbox. Go to the right, BEHIND the shops, take the one way lane up. There is plenty of parking where you will be on level with entrance to the restaurant. They have coffee and drinks for the morning, too. I will be back! read more

My dad and I stopped here for some much needed food after a round of golf at Darkhorse, and we were not disappointed. They have some great burger options on their menu that made it difficult to choose. I ended up going with the blue cheeseburger with fries, and my dad went with the teriyaki burger. Both burgers were delicious and grilled to perfection. The patty was quality and the toppings were farmers market fresh. We both left there satisfied and would definitely go back to try something else. The service was also great. We were able to speak to the friendly owners when we finished eating and learned that they are from the area. I'm happy that I have a new quality spot to eat at. We drove 16 miles one way to have lunch as they advertised, buy one, get the second one for half off. That did not happen nor was there a credit card adjustment. First off, walking up to the door was a rubber mat with curled up edges that I did not see. I tripped over the mat but was caught by my wife. I am pushing 85 and hate to think what would've happened had I have fallen. Then we went in and saw a dog in the kitchen. We were seated at the only regular table in the room with the sun beating in through the most filthy sliding glass doors I've ever seen. The owner bragged to us that the grind got great reviews in not only Nevada County but Placer County(?) Then the meal came with mustard on my wife's hamburger (she does not like mustard on a burger). Her burger was cold but the bun was hot. The burgers had no taste - lack of seasoning. The French Fries were extremely stringy, no taste, a bit greasy, so we took them home only to give them to the dogs. Incidentally, the fries pictured in their ads are twice the size as what we got. There were no condiments on the table. We were the only ones there at 2 pm on November 28. The owner told my wife we were only the second customers of the day. That tells us a lot! My wife ordered ice tea, but got raspberry ice tea instead. The bill came to $40.90. Too many negatives - we will NOT be back. read more
