What a fantastic pub/restaurant. Comfy, friendly surroundings with wonderful helpful staff. Nice menu with the 'usual' pub fare, thankfully not too long and over extensive. Plenty to choose from for any palate. As it was a Sunday lunch three of us stuck to a roast while the one other in our party decided to be 'adventurous' on a Sunday with fish and chips??? I must admit the plate arrived and it did look delicious and smelled so fresh. The roast beef arrived two 'as it comes' with one preferring well done. All of it perfectly plated with plenty of vegetables, all so fresh. Only one slight problem, the knives need to be sharpened. I noticed that all three of us were 'tearing' the beef as it should have been cut. However, maybe I should have requested steak knives. All in all a delightful Sunday lunchtime with friends and we will certainly be back soon. read more

While visiting England from Los Angeles I Had a lovely lunch with my parents and service dog, we sat by the fire and enjoyed a cozy afternoon drinking Guinness and eating traditional pub food. Our server was delightful she was so friendly, very pretty girl with braids, and while serving food also busted out a mean log fire to keep us warm. Truly a woman of many talents !!! She was truly awesome. We enjoyed the lunch so much we went back to have dinner before I returned to the U.S but were greeted by a very unfriendly older woman, I'm assuming she was some kind of management because she was brandishing a bunch of keys and rudely informed us from across the restaurant that unless we had booked online we could not eat. The pub was empty except for a table if 4 so not sure why she didn't welcome our business. This is the difference between good staff and bad staff, had we not had such a wonderful prior experience this pub would be getting a one star review. I have been here a few times with my family, cosy country pub very close to my sister-in-law's house. We're quite a large group so it's been great knowing we can get seated all together. We booked for our second Boxing day lunch. We had good expectations but were completely let down. We arrived at 2:15pm for our 2:30pm booking to have a drink. When we spoke to the manager about our table we were told due to the size of our party we would have to be seated on 2 tables. We booked 4 months in advance because we wanted somewhere we could all sit together like we have before a few years ago on Boxing day! The manager made no apology and never once mentioned this when we pre-ordered and paid in advance for our food. They had basically decided to cram as many tables and bookings in as possible. To annoy us even more we didn't get seated until 3:10pm. Service was abysmal, they were so under staffed. All the staff looked exhausted and run off their feet. There was only one person on the bar which made waiting for our table more painful. We were finally seated on a table of 9 and 6. The tables were barely laid. The poor waitress looking after us couldn't apologise more. Then my niece had a whole glass of wine spilt down her back as the tables were so poorly laid out there was no room for the waiting staff to move. Our starters came and went. Pretty forgettable really. Our mains came in dribs and drabs, we had to make the decision for those who had their's to start so they wouldn't get cold. Our mains looked like they'd been served in a canteen, plonked on the plate. Very over cooked veg, burnt potatoes and pigs in blankets. The turkey and gravy were the only decent things in the plate. At this point were we all ready to ditch dessert. These were ok but again there was a long wait and half of us were left waiting. Unfortunately we won't be coming back here again. Which is a shame as we had a lovely Boxing day here before and we surprised my husband here for his promotion in October this year. £25 a head for a 3 course Boxing day lunch was very reasonable but it wasn't worth it at all. This is the best place I've eaten at in a while. I tried one of the specials: Lamb shanks with roasted butternut squash and something else... it was awesome. I went with 4 others and everyone was happy with their dishes too. The dessers were huge (at least the Cheese board, and the Profiteroles anyway... can't remember the others)... It's a place with the feel of a real old english pub, with a cracking restaurant to boot (they obviously cook the stuff onsite - not just microwave premade meals like many pubs these days) I think main courses were priced at around 7-13 pounds each, with one dish costing a few quid more, though I can't remember what that was now either read more

We had a very disappointing evening Saturday night. We met four friends for a table booked for 8pm and the restaurant was moderately busy. Once our order was taken the waitress returned to say that two items that we had chosen had sold out so my friend re ordered. It took over an hour for our starters to arrive and my friends parfait was still warm. Once my husbands and my steaks arrived they were tough and chewy despite being different cuts. I have visited many times before and never had a bad meal but this time being with FOUR chefs and my husband who is also chef trained it was extremely disappointing read more

A busy, pleasant pub with nice food at reasonable prices. I was with a party of 7 for Sunday lunch, & got there early enough to grab a table by the roaring fire (which, though in January, made the area too hot - the pub staff had to open the door - but it looked nice! This was also a less crowded part of the pub, I was suprised to see how packed other areas had got by the time we finished our meal. Service was pretty quick, considering how busy the place was, and our waiter outdid Gavin from Gavin and Stacey in the charming, helpful, lovely 'Essex boy' stakes. Most of my party had the Sunday roasts, enormous platefuls with all the trimmings. I chose fishcakes from the lighter menu, very tasty. A good dessert menu too. Only downside was that the toilets were a long way away, up steep stairs, which wouldn't be so good for the less mobile, or the more elderly patrons there for lunch - though there may have been a disabled toilet I didn't see. There look to be nice walks in the countryside around, though it was rather too wet for us to take much advantage of that. read more

The Greyhound Inn is located what seems like out in the middle of nowhere, but it is fairly close to Brentwood. I don't think I've ever been here when it has been less that absolutely packed! The car park is always busy and it can be difficult to find a space outwith the car park. Well you think - if it is always so busy, the food must be really good - and it is, the food is lovely - never had anything I've not liked. The service can be slow and you may wait a while for a table when it's really busy but you can have a drink at the bar while you wait. I would recomment a turkey Sunday lunch. read more

2nd June evening meal booked for 4 people. It was a family celebration for both a birthday and the "all clear" from throat cancer. 2 of our party had travelled from Staffordshire for this celebration and it was ruined. No one available to welcome us or seat us on our arrival. We asked for a table next to a window as the weather was very warm, only to discover that the window didn't open. A flying bug kept buzzing around us the whole time we were there, which wasn't pleasant. From start to finish the waiting times for drinks and food seemed too long, although the staff seemed friendly, but thin on the ground. We were served by different staff throughout our meal. For example we were asked for our drinks order when we were actually still waiting for our drinks to arrive. We asked if ok for soup to be one of our party's mains, due to a dietary requirement. When it arrived it was so small and had to be sent back. Sister ordered sea bass on a bed of crushed potatoes, but to substitue the italian veg with seasonal veg instead. When it arrived there was no potatoes and the seasonal veg was cabbage, peas and a carrot. Very green, no variety in veg or colour, so uninspiring and lacking. She also had to wait a while for the missing potatoes while her meal was getting cold. Sadly no more veg was offered. My partner and I both ordered Hunter's chicken which was both dry and tough. I substituted the BBQ sauce for peppercorn sauce which was served in a jug with 2 large chips on the rim! 2 of the 4 desserts were subtracted from our bill as a gesture because we were so unhappy and disappointed. 3pm booking, arrived at 2.30 to enjoy a pre lunch drink. Very busy and only one person behind the bar, half the drink order served then had to wait because they had run out of wine glasses!! Finally sat at 3.25pm, staff lovely but service was slow, most of us were half way through eating when last meal served! Starters were good (even though waitress had to put down plate in wrong place complaining plates were too heavy) main meals were so so, meat too chewy, potatoes burnt and a little cold, dessert was apparently best part, I had an Irish coffee, tepid but ok. When asked passing waitress for a drink she said she was on her way for a wee as she had held it for ages ( did we really need to know this?)but would ask server for our area to come over, he did but then missed off a drink which by this time we just wanted to leave! Bill was over £300 but for 12 of us ( 2 children) not too bad. Would I go again? I would like to give it another go as this is the first time I have been and have had good reviews, so maybe I'll try in the summer!! read more

The Greyhound is part of the Vintage Inns group. It is a pleasant restaurant for a good wholesome meal. A very large choice of food so I guess most dishes are bought in already prepared. Generally very busy and a wait for a table is not uncommon. Friendly service in a good atmosphere. read more

We have been to THE GREYHOUND many many times, always at lunchtime, and it is always quite busy, the service and food is always good. However, we visited yesterday, 17th June 2016, and it was not half as good as it usually is. We had the bread and olives, while we were waiting, and we had only 3 thin pieces of quite hard (stale) bread, there was four of us. The waitress said that this was a portion size, but kindly bought us some more. This portion, which cost £5.95 is not very good value. Secondly, my granddaughter had to wait quite some time for her pizza, she received an apology, and then it came without the chutney it was supposed to have on it. Again the waitress apologised, and bought her a dish of chutney. My salmon on a ceasar salad, was dried out, and the salad consisted mainly of lettuce - this dish was priced at £12.95. We all agreed that the chef was too heavy handed with the salt on the chips, we are quite able to put salt on ourselves if need be. Also, this was the first time that the restaurant wasn't busy, was this because of a change of staff maybe? Or an drop in the usual high standards? THE GREYHOUND, really needs to raise it standards to its previous levels, as the competition in Brentwood is high. read more

Really disappointing. Cannot fault the front of house staff 2 very over-taxed waitresses, very polite and efficient. However, two items on our menu arrived not as described. When this was pointed out to the over-busy but very nice waitress, we waited over 20 minutes for the missing item that was stated on the menu to arrive, by which time the rest of the party had finished their main course. Before it arrived, I had to ask a second time for it, and could only find the second and again, very busy waitress, the same request. Eventually, the missing item arrived for one, instead of two, of us but was not as described on the menu. It was a pitiful slice/hack (which I could have done better myself in my own kitchen!) off an iceberg lettuce, 'thrown' in to a bowl, with no dressing (which still never arrived, even though I subsequently pointed out that that was missing too!). No condiments were offered either until I asked for them, thinking if I wait, they'll get here eventually, as I wanted to try and keep good faith in what was rapidly turning out to be a disasater of service and cooking. So by the time they arrived, the whole table (7 in total) had finished all of their main course! To back-up my point that condiments should have been offered as soon as all the main courses were served, a person on the table next to us spotted that we had eventually got some and sheeplishly asked if he could have the tray for his table! I naturally obliged. Help yourself before it disappears! In my opinion, without knowing the 'background' to the management, my guess is that the liaison between front of house, and the chefs/kitchen is not being supervised with due care and attention in other words, a pride in what you do and what people recieve. I don't understand how you can order something straight off their menu, and then they mix and match their own ingredients, get it wrong, and are unwilling to correct their own fault??? Hello? The manager seemed aimiable enough when asked to take a photo, but overall, it was an extremely poor experience for an evening out that was meant to be a celebration with friends; especially for the prices that are charged, and also that it was only a Wednesday night. Who knows what it would be like on an evening during the weekend? Really, really, disappointing, but not down to the waitresses, but I am definitely not going there again and will definitely not recommend the establishment to friends. Too much hassle. Having vowed never to go back after a very disappointing lunch time experience (lack of table and cold food) we received a 25% discount voucher and thought we'd give it another try. Booked online on Friday night, confirmed by telephone on Saturday, arrived on Sunday to find there was no record of the booking and no table. The table had been originally booked for 6.30pm and when a table was found at 7.15pm the restuarant had run out of all Sunday roasts, all steak dishes, and another 3 main dishes from the classic section of the menu. Food arrived hot which is more than can be said for us! We were seated directly opposite the kitchen doors and we sat through our meal with our coats on due to the draft coming out of the open kitchen doors. Although portions were quite small, the food was delicious. Our waitress was excellent and provided good service throughout the meal and the tip that was left was in recognition of her service only. It seemed to take a long time for food to be turned around and we didn't leave until 9.10pm which is late when you have children who need to go to school the next day. Whatever voucher is sent from this group of restaurants in the future, I can honestly say, we won't be tempted to try again! read more
