I was visiting Adiran from Upstate, NY. When I asked the local residents where should I dine for Mexican Cuisine it was pretty unanimous that The Grasshopper or "El Chap" was the place to go. The service was wonderful. Everyone I came into contact with was very kind. Prices are fair and the food was pretty good and filling! I personally enjoyed the chicken chimichanga and mexican rice! If you are looking for an authentic Mexican vibe, Mexican people, Mexican food then this is not the place for you. I only see americas working, I only see Americans dining in and they only play American music (many songs I have never actually heard before) service is mediocre at best and I imagine if I come back I will be back in hopes to make a better review and nothing else because I hate to rate this badly. The rice and beans are exceptional. The rice especially made me do a double take. Lotsa flavors in there! The salsa was tasty. Its finely ground with no chunks but still tasty. It comes in a squirt bottle. The cheese dip was orange but decent. Possibly store bought. I had the combination plate and my wife had the fajitas. I would describe this place as Americanized Mexican food. It is good without any wow factor. There was some sort of chunky beef in my enchilada that was yummy. The place is a bit drab looking but clean. No Mexican feel. Has a local bar feel. The service is excellent. The strawberry margarita that my wife got was just sugar water. They need to use real mix and real puree. Every single seat was full and I figure it's because it is priced so fairly. For the price it's darn good food. We have just had so much better one town over. I have leftovers and will eat it for sure. This is a local favorite and will be around a long time. Food is fresh and some of the best Mexican food around hands down! Get a side of Guac because it's always fresh! This place is consistently good!! The staff are so attentive and it's just such a cute place to visit. So much character, there's always something fun to see. We saw full size skeletons sitting in some empty booths, from Halloween. lol! I'm a sucker for a good margarita and it is my only minor complaint, that they are not my favorite here but opt for the regular Marg if you are a Margarita snob like me because the flavored ones only add more syrup! Don't even get me started on this lovely gem. Speaking with the staff, unfortunately they have yet to recover from Covid but that's not a terrible idea. They only hire the best staff and produce the best and most consistent meals and customer service in town for the past 35 years of my life!! Steve and Racheal (owners) still do not know me by name but recognizes and acknowledges my business each time and never treats me as just a "customer". Like I said with this place. They believe in quality over quantity. That's what makes it so great and successful. So it's worth the extra 40 min wait but they have came up with the genius sit in your car and wait for your order. When I asked about a drive thru, Steve's comment was we do not want to rush any underprepared food out the door. WOW!! IMPRESSIVE!! I love this business and return every time even though I live in Mexico. Throughout my life in Adrian, this is the only long standing customer oriented business I look forward to with each returning visit!! One negative I would have to say is ask for the bar side. The restaurant side has these funky led lighting that feels as though you are eating in a warehouse and not an intimate mood setting. Best Mexican food in Adrian for 30+ years - a must have whenever I travel back home!

Let me start this by saying I hate having to leave a negative review. I routinely use Yelp when traveling to find someplace good to grab a bite and I appreciate honest reviews. That being said this is easily THE ABSOLUTE WORST "MEXICAN" FOOD I've ever had. To all of the people who've left positive reviews of this place I can only assume you've never really had Mexican food. Even by Americanized Mexican standards it was pathetic. I ordered the fajitas and this is the only time in my life I've ever had fajitas NOT come out on a sizzling platter. Just a pile of meat, peppers and a slice of onion on a plate. My wife had the chicken chimichanga. She was legitimately angry with how bad it was. Dry, tasteless and with a huge chunk of what looked to be a half of a chicken breast. Others at our table ordered flautas and tamales. Bland was the word of the day. Ironically the only person in our group who really doesn't care for Mexican food loved their wet burrito. Chips and salsa are not free and the chips are store bought cheap ones that were mostly crumbs. The guacamole was fresh and very good. Also, our waitress was an absolute sweetheart and a rockstar. For the life of me I can't fathom all the positive reviews of this place for the "authentic" and "awesome" Mexican food. If you want Mexican food, you'd have much better luck at Taco Bell sorry to say. read more

I grew up in Adrian but moved out west in the early 80's. Every time I come "home" this is a must stop place. I've enjoyed everything I've tried and can't pick a favorite (wet burrito might be close). This year, the generations were able to experience the goodness. We hired El Chaps to bring their taco truck for our son's graduation open house. What a fantastic crew. They were set up and ready to go, and the guests loved it. Great food, great service, and made hosting a party enjoyable and easy. Instead of running food, we got to sit back, talk with friends, and relax. Let's start with when I first got there. It was close to closing time, and I was one of the last customers allowed in. When I sat down,I had to wait about ten minutes for anything to happen. Then, finally, the waitress came by and put a random salsa bottle on the table. I will get back to that momentarily. She left for another five minutes, then took my drink order, and only then did she offer chips. I requested chips, and she left, this time for around seven minutes. Upon further examination of the salsa, there showed signs of pouring, as if it had been used previously without being washed. She finally left the chips, with some cheese. I started to eat the chips, using the salsa. Only then did I see the waitress take two bottles of salsa from a table, combine them, then give them to another table. I was pretty grossed out by this, so I switched to the cheese dip. After some more time, The waitress came back, and took my order. She glared at me for a while, then asked me if I would need anything else from the kitchen. She was all around not friendly, and kind of rude. I was not impressed with her service. The food came in a timely fashion, surprisingly. The food was ok, witch is the only reason I gave this place an extra star. I would not recommend it, unless you are a health inspector performing an inspection. read more

Updated 1/28/14 I liked the Margaritas ( some say best in town) as well as the tacos. They went smoke free Jan 1 ,2010 before the ban...even better. The Chicken Fajitas are two cuts above other places. Unlike a place near Wal Mart ...this venue's Margaritas actually have alcohol in them and taste great. Made at the time of order, not stockpiled in pitchers... they are Fresh and Frothy! Adrian is a town rich in Hispanic Culture so you will find many authentic Mexican eateries, and they are all pretty good. I vote Grasshopper/ El Chapulin as the top on my list that serves alcohol. read more

This place is very well know to the locals. Good reputation for their chips and cheese. I limit myself here strictly due to the service. No matter what time of day I'm am there I have a hard time getting my pop refilled. Today we arrived around 20:30. Not to busy. The place is clean and is divided into a bar side and a restaurant side but is connected. The hostess is in the back of the bar side where there is extra parking. After we saw the hostess she had us seat ourselves. We sat for approx 6 min. Before our waitress showed up. She promptly took our drink orders but quickly forgot what they were as she returned. Our chips and cheese, drinks and my Long Island arrived soon after. (Long Island was awesome!). Food arrived quickly and correctly. Waitress came back once to check on our food shortly after delivered and again in the middle of our meal. Overall this experience was good. read more

Chaps is my favorite Mexican restaurant. The food has always been delicious. However upon putting my name in tonight we decided to stand in the pre-Covid waiting area, where two other groups were waiting ahead of us. There is a sign saying waiting area closed, but others were waiting there and we were next on the list. And, come on, the ridiculous Covid mania is over! Anyway, once the other parties were seated...the hostess rudely told us WE had to wait outside or in our vehicle. I don't expect any favors, but I do expect to be treated fairly and not discriminated against. I take two stars away for this treatment. read more

The Grasshopper has been a family-owned restaurant for two generations, run by some of the kindest people you'll ever meet. My girlfriend and I had just run out of gas on the side of a country road in Indiana (non-existent gas station on Google Maps...) when a family in a pickup pulled over and asked if we needed help. Without a moment's hesitation, Steve Rosales and his wife and kids deviated from their plan to visit their daughter and drove several miles down the road and back to fill up a gas can for us. In total they went an hour out of their way to bail us out of a tricky situation, smiling all the way. I live in Chicago so I've not yet been to the Grasshopper, but I do believe that good things ought to come to good people. If you eat here, you can feel good about patronizing a local business operated by the sort of folks who don't think twice about helping strangers. The queso was literally nacho cheese that you get at a gas station. Quesadilla had no flavor and had the same nacho cheese. The margaritas were weak and used daiquiri mix for a half and half. Service was super slow. read more

I may be slightly bias because this Mexican restaurant is what I grew up eating, so every time I go back home to Tecumseh, I make the extra 15 minute drive to Adrian to grab dinner at The Grasshopper/El Chapulin. For me, there is a little more than just good food at The Grasshopper. There's nostalgia too. It's almost a guarantee that I will see a familiar face when I get through those doors, but that just goes with the territory. I recommend mixing the queso and salsa - but be prepared to overeat. It's ridiculously hard to stop eating the chips and dip. The chicken enchiladas are amazing with the cheese sauce. Mmmm...my mouth is seriously watering right now. The chicken is shredded and very fresh. I wish I had more variety to review on, but I always get the same entree. I know that my husband has become a devoted fan of the burritos, tacos and the enchiladas as well. The amount of food he consumes there is shameful, but in a good way. It's just too bad we live so far away. I hope Yelpers nearby are able to enjoy The Grasshopper as much as we do! read more

Went there to eat and had to look around to find parking since rear lot was full. Got to hostess stand in back and told 20 to 30 minute wait and said they would text us. 45 minutes later we get a text. Walk all the way around the building to rear hostess stand and see hostess. She tells us we gave your table away we only wait 5 minutes. We were 6 minutes after got text. My wife explains this and hostess instead of working with us rudely gets out her phone to argue with my wife about how long it has been. Mind you we have been regular customers here for years. Hostess continues to tell wife she is wrong. So much for customer is always right. We left. Giving one more chance. Hoping they don't give our table away and are more timely. Service here has certainly went down hill last few years. read more
