It's a warm and inviting decor, and quality food, most of my experiences at Boot Jack's has been good, the new owner is a seasoned restaurateur and it shows in the way he has expanded his menu (especially the small-plate bar food and appetizers, which are all good.) unfortunately, I ordered the shepherds pie my last visit and it was swimming in grease from not properly draining the meat after cooking- I sent it back and they took it off the bill and gave me another item without charging me for it, so they made it right. My mom, my beau, and I ate at Boot Jack for a late lunch/early dinner. It was happy hour time so we got some excellent fried mushrooms. The food was good, but the service was mediocre. While we were eating our server got a call and literally walked off the job without saying anything to her coworkers. For a snowy Sunday visiting the lake, we wanted to start with a meal that would stick to our ribs. After asking for some recommendations from friends and family and then vetting them through Yelp, we decided on the Boot Jack Tavern. Located on the south side of Round and Devil's Lakes, Boot Jack Tavern is a cozy spot to grab a bite to eat. We parked in their large lot before hurrying in to the warmth. Once inside, the friendly bartender encouraged us to grab a seat anywhere, and we chose the table closest to the fire. The recommendation all around seemed to be to go with a burger, so that's what we both did. As we waited for our food to be served, we noticed how friendly and attentive the bartender was to everyone, greeting regulars by name, and making sure our drinks were filled, even as she served up others behind the bar. I have to go with the majority and recommend a burger if you come here. The patty was tasty and cooked just right, on a slightly crispy toasted brioche bun, and the fries that were served with it hit the perfect balance of crispy and soft. Update: We haven't stopped here in a couple years until tonight. Afainnthisnplace didn't disappoint. Friendly staff. Quick and attentive service. We ordered a few appetizers. Most of them were home made and delicious. The hamburgers we're cook to perfection and tasted great. The cajun chicken pdta was good. I would add a pinch more heat and sauce but all in all tasted good. We won't wait another two years to come back here. This is our first time being here. We were greeted quickly when we arrived. We seated ourselves and was quickly helped. They had started a new menu a few days prior to our arrival. Plenty of choices. Our waitress was very helpful with explaining the menu. We ordered several appetizers and entrees. Everything was great. The mixed drinks were great and pretty quick. Overall it was a pretty good experience. It was a Friday night at about 8pm and they had music playing. It was awful loud and made it difficult to have conversation. I would recommend it to anyone. read more

I guess I should have been alarmed when we sat down and although tables were full, hardly any had food on them. It took 20 minutes to get water and a coke to our table. We ordered a burger, order of wings, side salad and a perch sandwich. Almost 40-45 minutes later we received out food. The salad I ordered was warm. The wings were very small in size and were extremely tough. (I think they may have re-fried them as they were really dry.) My husband asked for his burger to be cooked to medium. It was burnt on ends of the burger and extremely dry. He couldn't eat it. My son had ordered the perch sandwich. The 2 pieces of fish on it was about 2 inches long in length and very thin. The bottom of the bun was thicker than the fish. He had taken off the top just to see if any fish was actually on the sandwich. He also stated that the tartar sauce tasted funny. The waitress came to ask if we everything was ok and before we could answer or let her know we needed anything she walked away! This was truly the worst dining experience I've had! I am very disappointed since the restaurant looked cute inside, but the service was terrible. As we were leaving I did mention how bad our food was and the waitress said "Oh! You should have said something!" How could I when you walked away from our table before we could! Definitely will not be back! That's $60 bucks down the drain! read more

As we had heard wonderful things from a friend about this establishment, we came from Ohio to visit. I'm just going to make a long story short and say that we were nearly swindled, bamboozled, and ripped off. Nicole, the server, seemed like a rather poor waitress from the very first. From sweeping our extra napkins off the table to flirting with the (round) table behind us, she obviously had other things on her mind. The food was good. The homemade chips were delicious, and my nachos would have been better with the jalapeños that were included in the menu description. My bill came and it totaled around $35. Reasonable considering my wife and I each had a beer with our entree. I paid with a debit card and when going to sign the bill, realized that it was for $59 which had already been billed to my account when I looked it up. Of course Nicole was nowhere to be found when trying to rectify this error. My wife had to walk up to the bar where Nicole was lounging, talking to the bartender. She claimed, "Oh, I just realized that I accidentally ran that card for the round table. (Which hasn't finished eating yet and their bill hadn't been brought out). I was just coming to fix it!" Nope. You got caught. By the way this was handled, it's a regular thing by this waitress. If you eat here, watch your bill to the penny. She didn't pick up two bills and accidentally scan the wrong one. She picked up my bill and walked straight to the register. She brought my copy as the $35 bill and the merchant copy was for $59. read more

First time visit and I very rarely write a review unless it has been an exceptional bad experience. Lack of help which I would think it would be owner/managers fault. (I have worked in and managed restaurants myself) Dinner took almost an hour after order was placed. Place was almost full inside and only 2 waitresses and obviously short handed in the kitchen as well. Our waitress was doing her best and I appreciated that. Food tasted fair but in child portions. My husband ordered Mac and cheese with 1 strip of bacon cut up on top, which barely covered the bottom of an 8" pan and single layer ..not heaped up at all. This and a small dinner salad $12.00. We all know the cost of Mac and cheese and to not have an adult portion, at that price? He left there, still hungry. My meal, we won't even go there. We eat out frequently and are relaxed, easygoing people and very understanding...we are also very familiar with portion size verses cost and sometimes waiting, which happens, but an hour for your food ???.... Boot Jack is a very warm, welcoming place with friendly staff! Beautiful woodsy rustic interior, stone fireplace, copper topped bar. Great selection of Michigan beers & wines, and food is well-prepared with generous servings - big sandwiches, lovely salads and wonderful homemade soups. Dinner entrees include nightly specials that are creative & "gourmet". Plus there are yummy happy hour 1/2 price appetizers. My wife and I drove from the Chicago area to Manitou Beach for a wedding last weekend and she is a huge fan of Shepherds Pie. Upon perusing the restaurant menus in the area, I found Shepherds Pie on the Boot Jack Tavern Menu and booked a reservation on a Friday night. The restaurant was crowded and their sign outside the entrance door informed us they were understaffed and asked customers to be patient with them. Even though it was so bustling, our server Shelby consistently came over to see how we were doing, to check if we needed drink refills, and to tell us how much longer the wait would be for our food to be served. The wait was worth it. My wife said this was the BEST Shepherds Pie she had ever had. The sauce on it was just outstanding. I had the Brooklyn Ribeye steak and although it was cooked a little more than my medium rare request, it was still very tasty. We had a great evening here and the great tasting Shepherds Pie sure scored huge points for me with my wife! We highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Tried several of the Michigan wines... all were terrible. Huge MI beer selection, but not impressed with the quality of four I tried. Loved the Cheese Curds. The onion rings were huge and had a lot of breading/crunch to them, which was great. I had the chicken sandwich which was delicious. The atmosphere is wonderful from the copper bar to the log cabin feel. The stained glass mirror in the front is absolutely beautiful. I especially loved the little nook with booths in front of the bar. While I didn't get the burger it's huge. If you're a beer lover they have a wide selection on tap with many local brews. If I didn't live so far away I would eat here all the time. I highly recommend Boot Jack Tavern. It's everything a dining experience should be with great food, portions, atmosphere and service. The atmosphere at the Boot Jack Tavern is perfect for the area, very rustic and relaxing. The menu is nicely laid out with a wide range of items to please the entire family. As with all establishments, I try them 3 times, prior to reviewing them. My first visit I tried the salmon with smoked Gouda primavera, this dish was just a bit too rich for my personal liking, it could have been the salmon Gouda combination that threw it off, possibly better with steak?? The fried pickles were over battered, maybe a little burned or they are just needing to change the fryer grease. Everything else I've tried I have really enjoyed. Buffalo Chicken Dip, Shrimp/Feta Dip, Caesar Salad and Chicken Pesto Panini all great (although I do prefer my panini in a press). Boot Jack offers a full bar with a fabulous Michigan Craft Beer Selection, way to support local! I had the bartender whip me up a virgin Bloody Mary and it was perfect. My only complaint is it took forever to get it, very polite service, but very, very slow. I do believe our server mentioned she was new, so in time I'm sure the pace will pick up. Mediocre service at its best is the norm for the most restaurants in the Devils lake area, super friendly, but unbearably slow. I recommend if you're having a lake day sit back, relax and enjoy, but if you have a time limit, find a different venue (not in Lakes region) to explore. I'm not crossing this place off my list, the potential is all there, just needs fine tuned. read more

I've been to Boot Jack a few times, and must say that the food and service are second to none. The atmosphere is just incredible, very relaxing and welcoming. The beautiful bar and log cabin style build make for a unique dining experience in Southern Michigan. When you're at Boot Jack, you feel like you could be in Northern Michigan. If you're looking for a place to try several different local beers or have a unique dining experience, I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more
