This is an awesome country pub on the side of the Grand Union Canal. We came here on a gorgeous,…read moresunny, summer day, and sat at one of the numerous tables that overlook the canal. It was tranquil and idyllic, watching the canal boats pass by, periodically opening the swing-bridge that traverses the canal. As another Yelper correctly indicated, the road here is a narrow single-track, with frequent maneuvering necessary to allow traffic to pass; it can be rough on the nerves, if you're not practiced at it. My advice is to leave the car elsewhere and walk the towpath to the pub: both more relaxing and prettier! There are 2 parking lots if you do decide to drive. The service was friendly, and they have some nice beers available. Food did take a while to arrive, but we were enjoying our drinks and the ambiance, and were not bothered. The food was superb, especially their Famous Duck Confit - delicious!!! If you are looking for a lovely country pub, look no further.

Its right on the canalside, with lots of tables outside for when the weather is warmer. Inside the pub has a really authentic character, and a great feel to it. The menu is great, and it has a ton of drinks on offer. Last time I went, the prices were fantastic, mainly due to a lunch deal of any 2 courses for £7. This may have changed since then, but you can always phone to check. There was parking, however in summer I believe it can get really busy.

A curious little pub in Berkhamsted…read more Held back by the size of the bar it scores well when the sun is out as you can sit by the Grand Union canal watching the boats go by. So in that way a great pub crawl pub - the type to stop off for one or two. Serves normal range of ales, lagers and fruity drinks.

However, on my recent trip back home to Berkhamsted, a quick Sunday night trip to this pub really stood out for being great. We headed out for a quick drink after a day travelling from wales and back. we get to the bar and there is a group of regulars sat at the bar so we order some beer on draft and go and take a seat, and play some of the quiz machine (for those interested we won 10 quid on battleships 2 off a 50p investment, a great start to the evening). We decide to grab another beer and this time the bar is a bit clearer, leaving us view to a huge selection of canned craft beers, I was in heaven. The barman was very friendly and tried as best as he could with the beers, was hard as they have no beer menu, so had to pick out beers based on labels. They also have a beer and cider from local breweries brewed especially for them. The cost of the beer is very competitive based on the town. its around 3 pounds for draft and the cans are 4 pounds each. The interior of the pub is nicely decorated and cosy. There is large amounts of seating outside under cover from rain., Outside you are located right on the canal and on summer its common to see people sat on the grass by the canal or on the lock enjoying their drinks. The locals are extremely nice (atleast when we were there), however on Friday/saturday the pub gets very busy and given the smallish bar can take a while to get served. They also have a quiz nights on Thursdays I was told, although sure if that's every Thursday. Definitely worth a visit if your in Berkhamsted.

What a warm welcome!…read more Stumbled upon this wonderful little country pub and was not disappointed. Went there on a Friday evening and had a wonderful time. Still-warm, freshly baked crusty bread with olive oil/balsamic was served to us while we pondered the daily menu of seasonal, fresh food. I had the lamb stew and the meat literally melted in my mouth. GF had the biggest steak I've ever seen and it was cooked to perfection (served with home cut chips and mustard on a big wooden block). The only disappointment was that I was too full to try anything from the mouth-watering desert menu - particularly the 'chocolate soup', which came with high recommendations from the landlady, Cristina, who was there to tell us about everything on the menu. After dinner, wander to the rear of the pub where there is a fabulous beer garden, complete with a small children's play area and lots of big tables with umbrellas. There's no commercialism in this little treasure, just a cosy place that was as lovely on a summer's eve as I'm sure it would be on a dark winter night. (we even got to play with the owners' puppy in the garden!).

The initial welcome was warm and friendly so we were off to a good start. However there was a limited range of drinks and my drinks ordered via the app arrived seriously short of a full measure, I polite asked the waitress to top it up. My drink then disappeared for about 15 minutes before I had to chase it up. We were unable to order a second drink via the app only a out of stock notification. Shortly after that, to add insult to injury we were told at 10:15 that last order had passed and it was time for everyone to go, basically an hour and a quarter early! None of this was clear from the website and why allow a 2 hour booking if they don't intend to serve. What would have happened if we had made a reservation for 10 or 10:30. Sadly, I will not be returning.

It has a nice garden area and a lovely private walled courtyard where the mill pond empties and you can watch the ducks. The staff are exellent - young and with real personalities. The food is lovely - not cheap but very good quality. The duck is lovely (hopefully not a companion of the ones outside!). There is a private dining room which holds around 15 - 20, great for a night out when things may get a bit noisy! The staff will come and take your drink orders. Highly recommended.
