    Rising sun in Berkhamsted

Berkhamsted has a few very good pubs but as far as I'm concerned this tops them all. It's a proper independent ale and cider pub. I think they are the only Camra (campaign for real ale) pub in town which tends to be a good standard. They do all sorts of stuff like quizzes on a Thursday and folk sessions where people all just turn up and anyone plays. They sometimes have bands and every couple of months they do a festival. To me this is the sort of pub I would want to find if I was visiting so I thought I'd leave a review. Cheers.

Best pub in the area, lovely location, friendly people, good beer, wine and fanominal spirits selection.

Disappointing night out. Because of the covid restrictions, we booked an outdoor table for 9.30pm…read morefor 2 hours using the online system. The initial welcome was warm and friendly so we were off to a good start. However there was a limited range of drinks and my drinks ordered via the app arrived seriously short of a full measure, I polite asked the waitress to top it up. My drink then disappeared for about 15 minutes before I had to chase it up. We were unable to order a second drink via the app only a out of stock notification. Shortly after that, to add insult to injury we were told at 10:15 that last order had passed and it was time for everyone to go, basically an hour and a quarter early! None of this was clear from the website and why allow a 2 hour booking if they don't intend to serve. What would have happened if we had made a reservation for 10 or 10:30. Sadly, I will not be returning.

This is a lovely old pub, located on the outskirts of Berkhamsted, on the old road to Hemel. Turn…read moreleft just past the garage into a large car park. It has a nice garden area and a lovely private walled courtyard where the mill pond empties and you can watch the ducks. The staff are exellent - young and with real personalities. It is the sort of place a woman could go into on her own and the staff would make her feel at ease. The bar is well stocked with several local ales. The food is lovely - not cheap but very good quality. The duck is lovely (hopefully not a companion of the ones outside!). There is a private dining room which holds around 15 - 20, great for a night out when things may get a bit noisy! The staff will come and take your drink orders. Highly recommended.
