From the outside, there is little about the Tower Tavern that stands out as remarkable. It's in a modern, nondescript building across from the west-facing entrance of BT Tower and flanked by other office buildings and a petrol station.
But any temporary misgivings are soon dashed by the welcoming staff, the good selection of beverages, and the well-above-average food offerings. And if that isn't enough, the service is far superior to nearly any other West End pub on a normal night.
The Tower is run by a husband and wife team who are experts in delivering the best in customer service and quality from their bar and kitchen. What's better (for us customers at least) is that one or both are usually present to ensure that all is running smoothly.
All is not lost on the owners' days off, as their staff are well trained to deliver to the same high standards. It' is certainly not the case in most West End corporate-owned tourist pubs with student workers who could give a toss because the manager works in an office miles away.
The Tower is tied to Greene King, so IPA is always on. However, they feature an ever changing selection of seasonal and guest ales, all of which are very well kept, as the guv'nor is an ale aficionado himself. Recent favourites have been Bath Gem, St Austell's Proper Job, and Brains Reverend James.
They also have a great stock of single malt whiskeys, from the familiar Laphroiag and Macallans to my personal favourite Lagavulin 16, which is normally found in posh lounges and restaurants for multiples on the price.
Then there is the food. The Sunday roast is beyond compare. The roast beef and lamb are to die for. I'v e not had the chicken, but have watched other patrons enjoying it with a watering mouth. Speaking of chicken, the Tower also does the best Buffalo-style chicken wings this side of the pond. And the hand-packed burgers aren't to be missed either.
For most London pubs, if they look crap (and I'm looking at you, 90% of Russell Square tourist trap establishments), they probably are. But don't miss the Tower Tavern, for what it may lack in curb appeal, it more than makes up for in service, selection, and satisfaction.
