The locals claimed that it normally wasn't needed for the climate. But I thing the management here needs to consider offering more than just a small fan. Each room has a heater, so I would recommend this hotel in cooler weather without hesitation. I had a clean, comfortable and QUIET room considering the wedding. Scottish breakfast was very good. I tried Haggis for the first time. If you ever watched the movie Highlander, Christopher Lambert describes Haggis as "meat and barley boiled in a sheep's stomach". MMMM doesn't that sound good? (NOT) Well, I found it to be a bit like corned beef hash, but much less salty. Not my _favorite_ breakfast food, but I am glad I tried it. They also offer roasted tomatoes, sausages, scrambled eggs, custom omelets, yogurt and fruit. I only ate breakfast here, so cannot rate the lunch or dinner menu.

The food served is of a high quality with a special mention for the mixed grill - the amount of food is so huge, rumour is no one has ever left an empty plate, I can confirm that! On a personal note, this hotel (then owned by a previous hotel chain) was the place I first met my wife, so it is 'special to us both'.

Since being an adult I have been back a few times and the building still holds very good memories. The hotel is an old mill and in the restaurant they have a glass floor and as you eat from the great menu you can watch the wheel turn the water beneath you, this is not something you get in many restaurants, and it's a nice change. The building itself is very old and I love places like this. They offer some cook traditional British food on the menu. The restaurant is on the river bank and you could be mistaken for believing you are no longer in Mother well, if you are looking for a break this is the place to visit.

For this reason I was looking forward to having Christmas Lunch here, however, I was sadly disappointed. The food was served and the presentation left a lot to be desired. In fact the soup was the best where presentation was concerned. Looking forward to it I took my first mouthful on to discover it was burnt. Clearly the chef hadn't tasted this before it came out to paying customers! The main course was served on cold plates - turkey dinner consisting of one small sausage and a taste of stuffing on a plate with a couple of slices of turkey covered in gravy. Not even hot desserts were served on heated plates. Overall I was sadly disappointed with my Christmas meal - not good value for money.

Upon entry, we were asked if we'd reserved, and when we said no, they made a big deal about making us wait in the bar while they set a table for us. Sorry, aren't all the tables in a restaurant already set normally? When we were seated we ordered and everything went smoothly, but the waitresses were just really rude and seemed so bored. They just kept acting as if everything we asked was a huge effort, including ordering food. You'd think they'd be used to taking food orders, seeing as they work in a restaurant. I ordered the ham hock and confit duck terrine to start, and the Seabass fillets with fondant potatoes, curly kale and a vierge dressing. Colin had the smoked chicken to start, and the strips of beef in a garlic, soy and chilli sauce. The food was all good, but for what it was, e.g. a terrine and Seabass, I've had much better elsewhere. For desserts, I had the cheeses and Colin had the sticky toffee pudding. Again, I've had better quality elsewhere. All in all, a decent meal. For three courses each, and 3 glasses of wine for me (might be an alcoholic...), the bill came just short of £60, which in a hotel restaurant, wasn't terribly bad. I probably would come back for the food, the menu seems to have a decent selection, but only if the staff upped their game a bit.

My chilli nachos had no chilli, but were very greasy, salty and they'd managed to melt the outside edge of the grated cheese and mould the rest into a lump of cheddar. Very unpleasant. My wife's chicken wings were no better, but her steak frite was nice apparently. However my burger was raw, and needed to be replaced with one which was medium at best. Medium steaks are fine, but not processed meat. The Moorings pricing isn't exactly competitive either. So they can't afford to be messing it up with what's put in the plate. It's not expensive, but at these prices you expect better. They kindly subtracted the starters from the bill, but of course by then it's too late. Yes, there's a reason it's quiet.

Just to set the record straight, it is not a house, it is quite mansion like, with ivy growing all over the wall, in a nice way. At night the uplighters go on too and it is just gorgeous. I have been here for dinner and it has nice ambiance, quite like a guest hotel in somewhere rural, so yes tartan can be found in various areas. I would go again, but personally I prefer the big cities rather than the cosy country feel. Meals are averagely priced although verging on expensive side, depending what you get exactly.
