I like a good dive bar, but good this was not. Friendly and attentive service which is a plus. I was welcomed by both the bartender and a server. Basic place with a handful of church basement like tables and stacking chairs. Seemed to be popular with the locals. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong things, but the fried mushrooms were super bland and the breading fell off easily. Tasted like bottled ranch, and I was hoping for homemade cause the menu touts homemade blue cheese dressing. I also got the Grand Slam, an open faced sandwich, why not go all-in right? Ingredients were really cheap. Thin, watery deli meat. Weird cheese that melted in an unappetizing plasticy way. Sad, limp pickle. It was ... not good. Bartender was very friendly but liquor selection was limited. Bottled domestics is the way to go. All in all ... don't think I need to go back. read more

This at first glance looks to be a "Dive" like on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives... but once I stepped into the exterior doorway I smelled the aroma of burgers, and I was hooked. As reviewing the menu for about 5 minutes, hard decision to make all items sound great, so settled on a cup of homemade split pea soup (have two soups daily) and it was like home, my family make a great split pea and this was better... and I've heard the nacho are to-die-for. So I got a 1/2 order, are you kidding me it was a full-size dinner place filled edge to edge and about 3-4" high and the ground beef was perfectly season, cheese nice and fresh as was the lettuce and tomato chunks. I went with Mild Sauce but next time it will be HOT! I fell 4 chips short from finishing the whole meal... maybe order 1/4 order next time... naah, loved the attempt to finish it and filled my belly. read more

Went there with my kids and grandkids, The place looked a bit questionable, like a rundown corner bar, and we had some problems with being seated. However, the food was very good and the prices are very reasonable. My daughter had the chicken burrito and said it was excellent. The hamburgers were very good, a bit on the small side but there are only $4 dollars. It was a little disturbing that they have a sign in book that was ignored. We signed in and waited at the bar and then they proceeded to seat people that walked in just as a large table opened! We did interrupt their seating and asked to be seated at the table since we had been waiting 15 minutes for a table. It took me quite awhile & many trusted recommendations before I got past the less sexy exterior to give the place a chance. While the interior decor takes you back in time, the inside is very clean & offers it's own non-pretentious charm. This family run business always does a great job. A perfect place for delicious & consistently prepared basics - burgers, burritos, sandwiches & appetizers. A full bar with many drinks served in a mason jar. Wonderful olive burgers & today a great taco salad & margarita. I once heard them say they had something like 200 homemade soup recipes in rotation! While I don't submit many reviews, my experience today well summarizes a number of meals at The Grand over a good period of time. I'm more apt to chime in with my posted opinion if I feel a place I really like is getting any bad rap. Ludington is a small town with a big tourist presence for the 4th of July holiday. Service here & everywhere can tend to be a little bit slower during peak times - a little extra patience is only fair for those working while we are playing. read more

Most of the menu is your typical barfood (burgers, burritos, steaks) but what really sets this place apart are their NACHOS. The Nachos Supreme is what you want, be sure to add lettuce and tomato and you will receive a HEAPING plate of crispy nachos just covered in crisp, cold lettuce and tomato chunks. Served with sour cream and an assortment of hot sauces...man this just makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Get the half-order as that is easily enough food for 1 adult. I really wanted to like this place. We started by ordering the half order of nachos, but were told a quarter order would be sufficient. We were happy for the suggestion and she was right as it was a large order. Only problem was we were still charged for the half order...didn't catch until later, so my fault. Ordered the special margarita and my wife gor the special mixed drink...manhatten? Mine was okay, but the manhatten was in about the smallest glass I've ever seen. Typical older bar setting with great food!! Some of the potions are huge, especially the burritos and nachos. Chips and cheese are outstanding - loaded with cheese! A half order is sufficient for your meal and you'll probably have some left over!! They change soups throughout the week. My favorite soup day is Friday.... Canadian Cheese Broccoli - so good!!! It's kind of a dirty place... other's have said they were a little afraid to go in, and I can understand why. The people are nice, the food is just ok. We had a nice dinner here. From the outside it was hard to tell if they were open or even still in business, but they were. The interior is cozy. My wife commented that it looked like they had put a Wisconsin bar on the Badger and plopped it down in Ludington. The kielbasa and rice soup was very tasty, as was the kielbasa and kraut sandwich. The blue cheese and bacon burger was OK but seemed to lack flavor. The baked potato was entirely satisfactory. Hard to decide between three or four stars, so give it a try. Absolutely Love The Grand (Hotel)! My Grandpa started going here in the 70s and ever since then the entire family has followed suit! Each time we walk in, we're greeted hello by name from the owners family -- and the food is amazing! Classic bar, diner food at its finest. They have delicious Mexican as a favorite of ours are their Wet Burritos. If you're hungry and you get the full wet burrito, you won't leave hungry! The Grand is one of those eclectic dining experiences that Ludington visitors should try when the wish to dine on the very casual side. Popular with the locals for years, there is often a wait during the summer. Beside the normal bar food, good burgers, nachos and burritos, you must try one of the two home made soups offered each day. Ask the waitress to explain what's in the pot, but most soups are 5 star. Don't be put off by the decor either inside or out, after all the place is @ 100 years old and a former stop for sailors on Lake Michigan. My inlaws love the chicken fingers and nachos/burritos; (unfortunately being from San Francisco, I cannot agree with their review of the burrito. However, it may be good by Michigan standards.) My 89-year-old grandpa loves this place, so I go there when he wants to. I don't remember what I've had in past years, but this year I had a chicken taco salad. There were a bunch of different bad-tasting cuts of chicken on the salad, and that's really what ruined it for me. Guess I'm spoiled--I'm used to chicken breast. I got tremendous stomach pain after eating the salad that lasted about 2 hours. I'm not sure what caused it. I am accustomed to spicy foods, so I don't think it was the spice. Also, I thought the owners/staff were not very accommodating. My sister is allergic to both coconut and palm, and when she asked what they fry their food in, they said, "vegetable oil." When we asked if there was coconut or palm in it, they said, "We don't get that technical--it's just vegetable oil." It would have taken them 2 minutes to look at the bottle and see which oils are listed. But they said it was liquid, so we assumed there was no palm or coconut in it (both are hard fats). Granted, I do think my sister should either call ahead to ask about ingredients, or order something that she knows for sure is safe (such as salad with liquid dressing). I think it is silly that she has to have fried foods and slow down the food-ordering process to ask about ingredients, so the owners' lack of accommodation in this respect didn't really affect my rating. However, others with food allergies who do need to ask and be careful--such as those who need to avoid minute amounts of gluten or peanuts--might prefer a more accommodating restaurant. My grandpa liked his crab pita, and my mom liked her reuben. It is probably a good place to go if you want a sandwich, onion rings, and a beer. I think if I had gotten something with cured meats instead of gross-tasting chicken chunks, I would have given it 3 or even 4 stars, because my grandpa likes it so much. I'm sure my grandpa will want to go there again next year. I'll try some American-style food and then re-rate. read more

This is definitely an interesting place...I don't really know how to explain it. When my family and I visited Ludington this summer we apparently "just had to go" to experience it, according to our friends who spend their summers in Ludington. The oustide of the restaurant is quite unfortunate and sad looking, and stepping inside doesn't get much better. The decor is nothing like I've ever seen, so in a way, the whole place is quite humorous, although I am more of a fan of modern/decade-appropriate restaurants. Everyone got a wet burrito and they say they were good; I got the fish and it was good but definitely nothing to rave about. Everything was just OK, but strange at the same time. Lemon juice in little packets?? Serving a breadstick with breaded fish and french fries?? Some things just didn't make sense. I am not dying to go back but I definitely understand now why our friends said we "just had to go." read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for many years in the summer. They DO NOT TAKE CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS. The looks are pretty bad, a kind of hole in the wall, but the food is really great. I was at this restaurant yesterday, having lunch with a friend, really bragging up the place, when we were told where to sit, and then a few minutes later, the waitress, who has been there for many years, threw our menus at us, and said she would be back. We were ready to leave, it was very busy, BUT we should have been just as important as the next customer. After her rude behavior, some people watching and waiting at the door, left. She was so rude, that I left her a penny, and I do not do that very often. I spoke with the man at the bar/cashier, told of the waitress's rude behavior and he said he would speak with her, my opinion he ought to fire her. I won't be back and I have many more trips to Ludington this summer. read more
