The home of Dublin Soda(formerly Dr. Pepper) and Granny Clark's huge pancakes. Me and life partner wanted to recreate our trips to Ireland and Paris, but alas on a budget. In Dublin, Texas everything supports the idea of its humble Town. I thought what best way to honor our trip was to seek out an Irish or seemingly Irish Pub. I will say I have had the pleasure of going to an Irish Pub in Kimmage. I think people fixate too much on the merits of the authenticity of a place. For example the process of serving a proper Guiness pint or even Irish Pub fare. They tend to forget what makes an Irish Pub. It is really in its vibe. Are the owners friendly and good hosts? Does it have a fun and welcoming energy? Is it that neighborhood hangout where you want to camp out friends, family or loved ones? My answer is a resounding yes. We came here on a Thursday night and it wasn't too busy. When this occurs this is the optimal time for owners to make a connection to its patrons. Firstly the owners said two things: Welcome and is this your first time here. Simple niceties don't cost a thing but are invaluable. The soundtrack of a place always dictates its crowd. I noticed the soundtrack is 90's with Color Me Badd, freestyle stuff and other nostalgic music on rotation. The noise level is perfect to facilitate conversations I ordered the Cluck of the Irish. And my life partner had "The Thing." Each were both appropriate bar fare. I had a Guinness from a can and Killian's Red Ale from a bottle. My only critique is they need to offer Guiness on tap. It doesn't need to be on Nitro. I don't expect the pour to be exactly like the one I had in Dublin. I will say I like it's subtle touches: the use of Celtic iconography, leprechauns and four leafed clovers. It is absolutely charming. Before I go on I must mention that the food was good, the service was excellent. The owners are extremely friendly. Each time I requested a refill the owner would oblige me and would pour a beer for me. And I can't pour a pint to save my life. Every business should be viewed in the context of where it's located. Shenanigans is in a very small town. It has Dublin Soda to claim. I believe there is only one supermarket. On a Friday night this place becomes the epicenter. And rightfully so. It is a fun place for friends, couples and families. As we were leaving it was filling up. They needed to cue House of Pain's, "Jump Around."

Genuine Guinness Stout is not served on tap nor does this establishment carry the bottles. A few months back I planned the run for my car club; not too many hotel options in the area so we chose Stephenville just north for our overnight stay. Saturday morning our group snacked at the complimentary breakfast before heading out for some curves. Event was well organized starting with parking; very short walk to the streets where teams were already cooking. Couple of options here folks; we purchased appetizer tickets for $15 each. That gave us access to run between booths and snack instead of eating a full blown meal. $35 would have gotten you a steak dinner served at 5:30pm. I think another $30 for wine. First stop we dined on Asian spiced pork belly! One booth had free beer!!! YES PLEASE! Notable bites to start were seafood boudin, spicy hot wings, and bacon jam bites. And that was the first 100 yards. Round the corner and a margarita machine made out of a drink cooler and a garbage disposal (redneck brilliance). Free Margaritas!!! OK its REALLY hot, another few yards down the street for free Gatorade. Another good dish with a play on Texas Caviar with grilled chicken. Sausage wrap with three salsa options including the last one "I dare you". Yes, it was friggin' hot but a nice way to induce more sweating to cool you off...eventually. Hit some shops; had some fun. Only complaint was the teams that just served crappy Eckrich sausage. Yall could have done WAY better for your guests! We were so full we didn't even stop for pie at the Koffee Kup. Fun times!!

There is wartime memorabilia section at the entrance from most wars including WW1, WW2, etc. There are displays of guns and rifles from earlier eras, as well as medals and uniforms. However, the atmosphere is thick with the smell of dust and enclosure (not good if you're asthmatic or have breathing concerns). You are required to leave a minimum $5 donation per person.

I have been to dozens of rural towns museums throughout Texas. This one though is the Diamond in…read morethe group. On our recent trip to Gatesville we found this gem. Its claim to fame is that it has over 6,000 different spurs, which is the Worlds largest and part of a 10,000 spur collection. You will see spurs that date back to the early 1800, along with Jackie Kennedy's spurs and those worn by Poncho Villa. This place has two floors, housing thousands of rare antiques and artifacts. It is huge, covering a City block with unique artifacts, to include Native arrowheads, millstones and clothing. It is very tastefully laid out with an antique soda shop, a historic school classroom, a transportation section displaying Ford Model T, a full scale log cabin/jail and numerous antique farm equipment, including a huge old case tractor and other early farm artifacts on displays. You will see a full scale doctor's office, a dentist office and partial hospital, displaying artifacts dating back to the early 1800. This is the single most impressive place I've visited in years. We spent two hours in it and didn't see it all. This is a must see museum. It has a gift shop loaded with very interesting merchandise for sale.

I say hidden because it does not look that big from the outside, but has a lot inside. It was so nice to have visited on their first day of reopening due to getting a new elevator (it has two stories). The volunteers were so sweet and offered up their knowledge on the displays, which was truly appreciated. There is so much history here including the Lloyd and Madge Mitchell world's largest spur collection and stories behind these extraordinary people. I appreciated the diverse history in the museum. There were so many displays and narratives posted, that it would take all day to read through it all. If you appreciate Texas History, it's definitely worth experiencing this museum. I'd like to pop in again if I get the chance to read all of the narratives that I didn't have a chance to get to last time. The hours were: Wednesday - Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.
