Quicken Tournament Review:…read more Kyle Stanley is the 2017 Quicken Loan Champion. We received an invitation to come watch the tourney & hang out in one of the VIP tents...it was good times. The Par 70 golf course is situated in the middle or amongst Avenel Farm, providing regal views of the residential, equestrian, swimming & tennis amenities. The landscape & upkeep was impressive throughout the golf course & surrounding greenery. The staff inside our tent were extremely hospitable, especially during the interment rain fall as they reset as many times necessary to accommodate everyone. The food & beverages were decent. I even popped my head into the Mad House to look around & the employees on hand were just as friendly. The only negative point of our visit was the interaction with the red shirt staff at the main entrance to the tourney if you did not have a parking pass...we opted to take Uber. Aside from their constant screaming that they work for the Tiger Woods Foundation, they were rude & boisterous to the Courtesy Shuttle Operators & individuals seeking assistance. Other than that, it was an enjoyable & entertaining 1st visit to watch championship golf.

The course keepers do a job that is nothing short of magical, and even in the winters the course is in beautiful shape. The system, GTS, is cool where the golf ball auto loads onto the tee. But the quality of the golf balls are really low, the graphics aren't great, and again, I don't trust the data all the time. Bare bones inside which I don't mind.

After some research, I thought @GolfHouse would be a great first experience for him since they offer junior coaching and it's similar to a video game. When I emailed them with questions, they were the most quick and complete in response than any of the other Ashburn area courses. At this point we're 3 sessions in. Coach Ju Hee is very professional and confident, but has just the right style to keep my 10 year old engaged. In each session she has walked the line effectively between correcting swing issues and helping him understand how the game works, while also keeping it fun and engaging for him, which is probably the most important part at this point. The sessions involved 30 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of free time in the bay which I'll sometimes use to take a few swings with my son. So far, this seems to be the right mix. Coach also shared the before/after swing photo I posted from session 2. While I'm not sure if other local coaches have this type of tech, I think this is a significant advantage because of the real-time feedback and insight it gives her into exactly what is happening. It's also great for us to see the progress he's making. Overall, I definitely would recommend @GolfHouse and Coach Ju Hee for lessons. At some point I'll probably book a bay with some of my friends who are more serious golfers during a lesson and see what they think about it.

They have some construction going on currently. A couple of holes are shortened due to the construction. Fairways are well maintained and greens were rolling well too. I had a great front nine, but plateaued in the back nine. It's not too difficult of a course as they don't have many penalties. Even if you don't drive straight, you could be in play to make a par.

Overall, I think I got what I paid for considering the lower rate. The course wasn't too crowded so I was able to check in at the pro shop within plenty of time for my round. The gentleman at the desk was really friendly and made some great conversations and made the both of us feel welcomed. We took some practice putts on the medium sized putting green for about 15 minutes then loosened up at the driving range. Personally, I wouldn't want to practice at this range for my day to day iron work - the mats were in pretty rough shape and the range didn't look extremely well maintained. The course itself was just okay - again, getting what I paid for. It wasn't an overly difficult course but there were definitely some holes that my partner and I struggled with. The greens seemed consistently maintained and the fairways were nice (not that my ball ended up there often). We did notice that the cart paths needed alot of work - lots of instances of broken pavement or rubble in the cart paths. We have to offroad several times just to drive on more even grounding. The snack shop/cafe was closed for the day it seems and there were very limited snack/drink options in the pro shop. We were hoping for a snack throughout the round but to our disappointment, there was also no cart vendor to sell us something quick. All in all, a fine afternoon playing a round - I would come back but only for the twilight special. I wouldn't want to pay for that $45 or so for the quality of course and amenities. A solid course for beginners to intermediate players.
