Short story - bf proposed. Fast forward to now - he told me about his experience ring shopping. So many great places in Calgary. There are whole sale diamond shops, shops with every setting under the rainbow, shops with the biggest name brands in the world. If Calgary has nothing else, it's selection. But it all came down to this - as a man who runs his family business, he wanted to support a family business. Goldsmiths, a family run jewellery store for the last 40, is the type of place you could drive by everyday on your way to work for a year and not even notice it. Like I did. He knew what type of person I was, he kind of hand an idea of what I would like - so he found a few pictures but more than anything, used words to describe to the staff there what he thought the ring should look like. With the descriptions he gave them, they created a one of a kind, vintage inspired engagement ring. They took time and energy to custom design a setting that he would be proud to put a diamond on. Numerous visit, back and forth decision making, hair pulling, he had nothing but their full attention to make sure it was perfect. On top of that - he says flat out he got the most diamond for his money, far and beyond what other retailers and wholesalers could offer him. Had them create our wedding rings just over 25 years ago. Loved the final results. Just went back to see about having a ring designed for my wife for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Had a 18K Gold necklace and bracelet with me for them to appraise for a credit towards our ring. Quoted for 76.5g of 18k gold at $1,400, went down the street the same afternoon to Calgary Gold and was paid $2,400. Do not feel that they are trustworthy plus the woman who assisted me was not particularly customer friendly (both times I was in, same attitude). Will not be back to have them create any products for us in the future. read more

I used to go there a lot for jewelry repair and the experience was more or less OK. I found their services overpriced but I figured I'll pay the extra as long as they did a good job. A couple of months ago, I took my engagement ring there to have it re-sized. They called me up a couple of days later to advise some of the smaller stones in the setting needed re-clawing. I agreed to pay for the service. I went to pick up my ring after 3 weeks when I was notified of it being ready. It turned out, it hadn't been re-sized but they assured me the re-clawing was done and they would do the re-size for me that afternoon. They warned that the ring might not be "perfectly round" as they needed to go down quite a bit. I returned that afternoon and was presented with a semi-circular ring. They basically cut through the back, took out some of the band and gave it to me like that. When I inquired, I was told that they had warned me it wasn't going to be perfectly circular. The issue is after their "resizing" the ring was a semi-circle, the back being completely flat. I was charged somewhere around $150 for this work. I left almost in tears and took the ring to a different jeweler who was stunned that a professional could call that re-sizing. The new guy kept asking if indeed a fellow jeweler had worked on it...I guess he assumed I may have done it myself with pliers in the kitchen. He then proceeded to show me under a microscope that the re-clawing on the smaller stones had not been done, although I had been charged about $75 for that precise service by the Goldsmiths. Suffice it to say, I am never going back. Luckily the new jeweler was able to fix up my ring such that it actually looks like a circle again, not some odd geometrical shape. My fiance had a fit when he saw their handiwork. Absolutely disgraceful. P.S. For any interested parties I have a picture of what my ring looked like when I got it back from the Goldsmiths. I went in today to get my ring sized. The lady I talked to on the phone an hour earlier told me to bring it in to see the ring and if they could properly size it or not. When I took it in the lady I talked to on the phone was no longer there I guess, so another lady came up to me. Let's just say she was VERY RUDE. She literally took the ring looked at it and told me they won't be able to size it. I then asked her if she can check with the gold smith to see if the sizing is possible or not. She then rolled her eyes at me and took my ring to the back room, then came out 2 mins after and said "nope". She was extremely rude. I know a lot of people that go to this place and will be telling everyone about the horrible customer service I experienced today. It was absolutely horrible. Avoid this place!!!!! Unless they get new friendlier staff. read more

I went to the Goldsmiths excited to support local business in Calgary. The experience started off promising, but poor communication, poor workmanship, and ultimately a broken wedding band 3 weeks after I started wearing it has left me disappointed. I brought my band in to be fixed at my own expense (the jewel fell out and was lost while I was at school), they had my rings for over 3 weeks and when I phoned to find out where they were at with the repair they couldn't find my ring for 24 hrs and they hadn't even started the repair. I brought the ring to another jeweller and he pointed out flaws in the band and said that the setting for the jewel was designed to fail. All in all, a terrible experience. read more

Very disappointing! It was an inauspicious start when we were kept waiting 45 min for our first appointment and it went downhill from there. We had 6 weeks to the wedding. I found a ring in their catalogue and was assured that it would be absolutely no problem to have that ring made with some minor changes and it would be in time. We came back to pick the diamond, were shown progress by email and came back again to see the wax model which was nothing like the ring I picked. Very concerned we spoke to the supervisor who definitely was going to remake the ring (the original was actually her design) but it wouldn't be ready for the wedding so it would be ready when we came back in another month. We felt we were in good hands. We were arrived to pick the ring up after our wedding, having been told it was ready, it was only half done. She had us take the ring home anyway so that we would have something to show all the relatives that were going to fly home soon. The general consensus was that the ring looked home made. We brought the ring back, now we were shunted to the owner. We were fed up, especially after having the blame put on us as we "didn't come in often enough in person". We demanded a full refund, which the owner initially was not going to do saying that they would keep a percentage back. Finally after some discussion she relented and we did get our refund. We absolutely do NOT recommend this place! read more

Completely Thrilled! My husband and I wanted to design a very special ring for my significant birthday this year. We went to the Goldsmiths to look into how to go about designing a custom ring. I brought with me a few ideas, as well as some stones I inherited that I wanted incorporated into the design. They worked with us through a number of different designs before we settled on the right one. They listened to what we wanted and made some really wonderful suggestions. In the end, the ring that was presented to us went far and beyond what we had imagined. It took our breath away. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were impressive. I now have a beautiful custom ring created just for me that I will cherish forever. Every member of their staff and design team were professional and wonderful to work with. They truly understand not only what custom design means, but what customer service means as well. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality piece of jewelry handmade by true artisans committed to their craft.
