Earth Gems, in my opinion, is a brilliant, BRILLIANT concept in the arena of selling rocks, gemstones and stone art pieces. They have a large, LARGE selection of product from all over the world in little baskets and beside most of those stones is a small piece of paper that you can take with you, that lists the new age properties of each stone. Seriously, brilliant! At any time during operating hours, there are people meandering though and shopping, with their little baskets full of stones. The price point is largely dependent on the size and type of stone. You an go in and spend 1 or a few dollars on a small gemstone, or you can spend several thousands of dollars on an art piece or amethyst/citrine church. I go into Earth Gems looking for gifts a few times a year and rarely come out empty handed. I have referred many people there, and nobody has had a negative experience that i have talked to. The owners are always in there and they are friendly and knowledable. They are always available for questions, but they do not hover, annoy or make any hard sales. Recently I have been extremely impressed with the quality of jewellery they are carrying as well. They have always had a large selection, but recently, the selection of more modern pieces have increased. if you, or someone in your life has a love of natural stones, this is definately a magical place to check out. read more

Earth Gems has the largest gem inventory in western Canada; over 850 stones to be exact are represented here. Stones, crystals and minerals from all over the world, Jade from British Columbia and even some stone from Northern Alberta. The gentleman working at the store was so personable and kind, he took the time to walk through the store highlights with me. He explained the value of a crystal and mineral depends on its rarity, he pointed at crystal encrusted geodes, some that came up to my navel, these can range from anywhere between 10 to 2500. But for that extreme collector we went to his glass encased counter, here he said is where the true gems lie (pardon the pun). Rocks or meteors from above, so fascinating, a small one inch meteor was priced at $285, he said these are the rarest types of rocks on earth simply because they are not from earth. Many customers buy these for their collections and others swear to their ability in enabling them to out of body and astral travel. He placed it in my palm and off I flew. He then showed me another beautiful bluish aquamarine stone that can be mined only in 1 square mile area on this planet in the Dominican Republic; I had a small half inch stone in my hand worth over 180 dollars. On a more commercial scale, Earth Gems also carry gems set in sterling silver and gems strands for making your own jewellery. All in all a very large, well kept, and well organised establishment. Every type of stone is organized in it's own basket, and each is accompanied with a slip of paper that you can take home which outlines the name, location and metaphysical properties of each stone. Super handy to not have to leaf through a book or look everything up on your phone! No word of a lie, it's easy to spend a couple of hours inside, losing yourself amongst the rows and rows of pretty things. Just when you think you've seen it all, there's more! The prices are very competitive, and they carry a few types of stones I haven't seen anywhere else. A fabulous place to shop for stone jewellery, beads, decorations, & even kitchen & housewares. You can find individual beads for less than $1, & huge geodes for $100s. I've seen everything from fossil serving plates to many types of stone candle holders over the years. The larger items are mostly organized by semi-precious stone/mineral type in display cases along the walls, with smaller pieces available from baskets on tables in the centre of the room. (If you haven't been there in a few years, you are in for a treat, as they have moved downstairs to a MUCH larger store & have a huge selection now) While they have a lot of new age signage & carry non-gem items such as incense, they have a decent handle on the geology as well. If you are a jewellery designer, they have greatly increased their selection of drilled beads strands, while still carrying many finished pendants & rings for people who want ready-made items. I went to Earth Gems for the first time last week, and I will now be going on a regular basis. Just wish I had the budget to spend more money there =P The selection is GIGANTIC! The prices are more than reasonable. The store is clean, and the walking space is clear and wide enough for several people at a time. The displays are well laid out, and the colours flow very well from one to the next. These guys carry Reiki wands, loose stones (some as small as a penny, others as large as your torso), bracelets, earrings, necklaces, pre drilled stones to make your own jewellery, wind chimes, and in some corners even incense and other burners. Just to give you an idea if you have yet to visit this store. Pricing, again is very reasonable. I was able to purchase magnetic hematite, goldstone and blue goldstone bracelets, as well as a pair of small amethyst studs for about $20. Naturally, the larger crystals can range up into the thousands, but something that large is rarely needed/desired by your average shopper. The service was what I look for when shopping. The owner(?) acknowledged our presence by greeting us, and left us to browse, but was able to provide us with information when requested it. Now, it was fairly busy when I was there, and it doesn't seem like they have much for staff, so do be patient if you require assistance. The overall atmosphere of the store is calm but lively. Make sure you're ready to spend close to an hour for your first time visit, as there is tons to look at. Ok, enough Sir Mix-a-lot. Today was my first go of Earth Gems. It's over on 17th Ave right next to Tubby Dog. I'd advise getting off your cell phone before you reach the top of the stairs. My mom had called just as we were parking, and so I was catching up with her a bit while I was perusing the rows of pretty rocks. I'm not entirely sure, but I think I got a very covert dirty look from the shop keeper at one point. In my defense, we kept it short. Anyway, once off the phone, I let myself be lulled into the quiet energy of the place. There was meditation-esque music playing in the background and just a few other people perusing the aisles. I found a really big rock that's supposed to stand for abundance and prosperity. It's $340. But it's so pretty! And who doesn't want abundance? I'm sleeping on that purchase the very least. lol At any rate, you'll find bracelets already strung for you, some cool looking pendants that just need your favourite chain, and then all matter of precious rocks and gemstones, each with a descriptor. For some unknown, profound reason, I had never visited Earth Gems until just recently. I didn't even know that this store was located on 17th Ave and let me tell you, all these years, it's been my complete loss. Earth Gems is AMAAAAZING! They've got rocks, crystals, minerals, therapy stones, collector stones and even rare and exotic gem stones. As Dinah G. mentions, the gentleman who works at this store is a real diamond in the rough (You didn't expect me to resist that one did you???). He truly goes out of his way to ensure you find exactly what you're looking for. My only criticism of Earth Gems is of my own fault - I wish I had known it was around all these years. Best crystal store ever! Earth Gems is the most organized crystal store I've ever been to. The owners greet you when you walk in and then let you browse - thank you- but are available for any questions. The selection is fantastic, everything from the smallest stone to big center pieces. They have salt lamps, fountains, and a wall of incense. The store is very bright so you are able to really examine everything. The jewelry is displayed nicely, lots to choose from - bracelets, pendants, rings, and even if you look 10 times, there'll be another piece you didn't see before. You are required to use a little basket which always cones in handy. I also try not to bring a big purse or other shopping bags as I don't like the possibility of bumping into the beautiful crystals. My advice is to have time- I always spend around 1.5 hours in there and it feels like 10 minutes - one of these days I'll have 3 hours!!! read more

this place is incredible. i can easily spend over an hour browsing here, and i always end up spending way more than i mean to. that sounds kind of bad, but it's really a ringing endorsement. the variety of stones represented here is astounding! small crystals, beads, polished and sculped pieces, salt lamps, giant geodes and minerals, and pieces set in jewellery. the staff are really sweet and non-obtrusive (don't hassle or hover over my friend and i when we spend a long time just looking). this store is fn rad and i suggest you check it out. read more

This place is absolutely amazing! I've visited many times, and let me tell you - you will walk in and by the time you walk out, it'll easily be three hours later. Definitely visit when you're not in a rush, the selection is incredible (especially if you're with kids, they will be in HEAVEN and you will never leave). There is absolutely nothing this store does not have, the inventory is intense. You will find rare gemstones, common gemstones, gems of different clarities and finishes, rough gems, shaped gems, strings of gems, bags of gems....holy smokes! The owners are great, they are very, very knowledgeable, but as someone mentioned, do give them a break if it's really busy in there and you have a question (and it is always busy in there). The store itself is large, the inventory grew as they moved from the second floor to the basement (more room, yay!), the displays are well lit, clear, marked, priced, and very easy to look through. All the gems are hand picked by the owners as they travel to South America (and I'm sure other places) quite often for supplies. Prices are very good and very comparable. I have been to every gem store in Calgary, and Earth Gems is definitely where you want to shop 'til you drop. Of course the prices range from pennies to thousands, depending on what you're after. They do have some very high-quality gems if that's what you're in need of. They also carry incense, books, jewelry, pendulums....all kinds of goodies. Been there this morning to check out the stones. They have HUGE selections, I brought an Amethyst and a Citrine bracelet, good price compared to those Asian store in Chinatown. Also brought a feng shui citrine and Amethyst. I saw a lot of people in there buying, I though I am the only one interesting in these thing. Have to agree with you Sapna, Earth Gems is Amazing. I purchased a ring and bracelet as a Christmas present which I was unsure of at the time, so I specifically asked if I could return it if I changed my mind or the recipient didn't like it. I was told by the employee at the time I had 7 days for a return or an exchange could happen afterwards. I returned 4 days later, to return the items as I found an alternative. Much to my disappointment, the store owner was extremely hostile, argumentative and rude. Even after the original employee confirmed her promise he still denied to refund my purchase. You would think someone who sold gems and specialized in energy would have good energy themselves, however this owner was nothing but rude, dismissive and verbally abusive, even threatening to call the police on me. I left absolutely appalled by this behaviour and I definitely will not be returning. I suggest that if your looking for light, positive and healing energy that you seek it elsewhere, none to be found here. read more

I absolutely adore this place!!! They literally have anything you are looking for. From individual gem beads to large stone pieces that are literally taller than me (I am 5'2). When you walk in there is a wonderful energy that surrounds you. The people who work there are always very helpful when asked, yet they leave you to shop around on your own without being hassled. There is soooooo much to choose from. I usually spend at least two hours here (and thats only when my boyfriend is with me). Normally he can only handle about an hour of shopping but this place even interests him a little (ex. he found obsidian, which is in minecraft, so he was impressed). Honestly do not come here if you do not want to spend money. Its super easy. They have decent/comparable prices to other gem places (but even if they were a little higher, it would still be worth it, because of the vast amount of choices. GO HERE, NOW You will not regret it! I didn't even know these kinds of stores existed! The shop is full of pretty rocks and crystals and about half of them are beads. They had gems for as little as $1 and then of course they can get pretty expensive as well. The people behind the counter were friendly and didn't rush me at all. Can't wait to go back! read more

racist employees following me and my friend around (and only us) the whole store. did not greet us or ask if we needed help but silently followed us. i thought she was a customer at first because she came up and pretended to look at the oils we were looking at directly in our face while again.. not speaking to us. after she continued to follow us around the store, my friend called her out for this. the owner(?) defended her by saying it's just how they help and they do it to everyone. how did she help if she never spoke to us and silently followed ONLY US? and we just happened to be the only 2 black people in the store. very rude, unprofessional and discriminatory. came there with the intent of spending money that day and i'm never going back and telling everyone else to do the same. read more
