The worst return experience of my life!!! I attempted to return a gift a few days after it was purchased and I was told it must go on the original payment, I gave them a credit card to put it back on and the next excuse was that it had to be the exact same card charged, they wants the same numbers on the card to tally. I told them this was never the way to go and two different individuals told me it was their company's policy. I explained that it was a gift from my husband and I could give them all the details so they could match it and my ID as backup. Well, they won't budge. I got so frustrated and tried to reason with them why it should not be so and finally conceded to take my husband's card to get the refund at another time, the woman at the counter immediately countered that they would not just put it on his card and he must be physically present! What if it were a gift from an out of country friend? Am I to bring in this person from wherever they were? The lady kept apologizing but was insistent that the buyer had to be present! I left there in anger as I had never experienced such an issue in my life. It makes me so certain that it was their cunning way of forcing you to keep the item as you probably would not want the buyer knowing that you were returning their gift. Icing on the cake was that this people called my husband to "explain" why they did not grant me a refund, thereby causing a rift in my marriage as I had not yet informed him I was returning his gift. Horrible experience! My husband and I left both my engagement ring and marriage band for the store to clean and resized. They lost my marriage band and never resolved the problem. They are only interested in having you upgrade your diamond to "Artisan" created diamonds. I still very upset since I no longer have my marriage band. We had been to quite a few stores already and were getting quite overwhelmed with options and underwhelmed with service so we were not expecting anything too different from Spence. I loved my rings from Spence Diamonds but after 7 years of marriage I took my rings in to be resized. I was informed 12 of my 13 diamonds were cracked or broken. I spoke to many friends and family who have been married longer than I have, they were shocked... it definitely says something about the quality of the diamonds. So we asked for the rings to be returned without any work, they couldn't even take the time to clean the rings, they left little red dots on all the diamonds. I Love the fact that I can upgrade the setting/mount for a year from purchase date and indefinitely upgrade the diamond forever. If you had asked me to rate Spence Diamonds 3 months ago I would have given them maybe 3 stars, but my recent experience with them changed my mind. My fiancé bought my engagement ring here. We had a great experience during that process. After my fiancé proposed of course I wore my ring and found over time I was very disappointed. My ring was not very durable, I managed to damage it doing grocery shopping (lost a halo diamond), grabbing something out of my closet (caught the setting on the wire shelf and it twisted the setting sideways) and almost lost another halo grabbing something else from my basement. At this point I had taken my ring in 3 times to be fixed. It was frustrating, time consuming and expensive. I thought maybe I should pick a different setting. I ended up going in and one of the sales people helped me out. He informed me I would have to pay for the setting and to have the Diamonds switched to the new ring. It was going to cost me another $2K! Then I decided maybe I could sell the ring and find something cheaper, which I would be less worried about. While I was mulling this over I received a call from Suzanne. She was reviewing the files from a past employee to ensure all was ok. I filled her in on what was going on and she completely empathized with me. After a few conversations with her management, they went over and above to make things right! This is the worst business to buy your engagement ring from. My husband bought my ring in 2009 from Spence in Houston USA. In 2010 they closed their operations and said that the "Warranties" will be still honoured by Spence Canada. July 2011 I noticed a small chip in my centre stone. I was so annoyed. The only way to contact Spence Canada was via email. They would not call us back to talk to us. Went as far as to say they are doing the USA customers a favour by honouring the warranty !!! After several emails back forth they finally got us to parcel the ring to them at our expense and told us when they ship it back but would charge us for the shipping cost. They received the ring and I was told it would take a few weeks to replace it with a new diamond.... it took 1 month and i had to keeping emailing them to ask for a progress update. Finally they ship the ring back to me... it is held up in customs... why... Spence didn't bother filling in the details to say it was a repair to a ring they sold us back in 2009. Therefore should not be a customes issue.. IE they need to declare on the forms it is a repair of a ring I had sent them to fix. Going back and forth with Fed Ex and Spence... Fed Ex has not received the forms they need from Spence and Spence keeps saying they have taken care of it. If Spence does not respond to Fed Ex, the ring gets sent back to them at MY EXPENSE. Do you think that is good business practice ?? Seriously, if you want to buy a ring don't go to Spence. Go to a company that offers you life time warranty, life time buy back and life time upgrade. We've all heard the advertisements on the radio. The owner, Sean Jones, had an annoying voice and drives me crazy. But I'll never forget Spence, which I guess serves the purpose. I purchased my fiances engagement ring from Spence. I visited Spence because I liked the idea of holding the rings without an armed guard standing next to me. In fact, for insurance reasons, several jewelers will now take your ID and make you sit on a chair while looking at any jewelery. Trust me, that's not comfortable, as we discovered while shopping for wedding bands. I'm getting off topic though. My first visit to Spence was fantastic. I was only harassed twice and only for a few seconds. I was offered coffee or water and otherwise let loose on the display. I spent almost 2 hours on that first visit, looking at and picking up every single ring there. In case you haven't heard the ads, or visited the store, Spence uses fake rings that look remarkably real instead of real rings behind glass. As such, the displays are completely open and you can literally just reach in and grab them. At one point, I was walking around with 4 fake rings on my hand. I enjoyed about a dozen more trips to Spence before I found the ring I wanted to buy. And yes, I didn't see the ring until my last visit. Yes, they have that many rings. And yes, it's likely somebody had that ring during my previous visits so I missed it. That would probably be my only feedback for Spence, they should have at least 2 of each ring so you don't run into that problem. Once I decided on the ring, I sat down with a sales rep (who isn't there anymore, so I won't bother mentioning his name). He went over every single detail of the ring and the diamond. The amount of information you get with regards to diamonds is amazing. But well worth it. After much discussion, I selected the diamond and gave my deposit (they have diamonds on hand, and more available for order). I was fortunate in that I wasn't in a rush to get the ring. My planned proposal was months away. But, Spence did offer to give me a loaner ring in case my proposal would precede my rings arrival. Awesome. Finally, Spence Guarantees are incredible. They will replace your diamond if it's chipped, cracked or separated from the mounting within 5 years. They have a lifetime trade-up allowance where they will give you the purchase price of your diamond towards a new purchase (it has to be 150% more than the original). There is more, so I would suggest checking their website. By the way, the ring was beautiful, she said yes, and 1 year later we haven't had any problems with it. read more

Never in life have I browsed in a jewelry store for so long. I think it's brilliant that Spence is a no holds barred type of business. Try any ring on without assistance, no need to ask about prices and they have these awesome trays to carry around that hold your ring choices ranging from "not bad" to "this could be THE ONE!" What a great way to shop. I saw so many amazing rings that I had over 20 piled on the tray until my spouse made me narrow it down to 8, as this was his strategy to safely 'surprise' me with a ring we'd both be proud of. It's very comforting to know you have a lounge to sit in and read or watch TV should you need to tap out for awhile. I actually hung out there while my spouse met with one of the staff to discuss the final 8 rings I chose. I also was able to help myself to the fridge, change channels and be entertained by the cute short stories on the restroom walls. I snuck into the men's restroom because I was curious after reading the one in the women's. I think that story is actually more entertaining for me than the one meant for women's eyes only. While on the hunt for an engagement ring, my fiancee and I came to check out Spence for some ideas. We were promptly greeted by David when we walked in. He gave us a quick lowdown on how things work and offered us some water while we browsed. One of the key questions he asked was if we wanted there to be some secrecy in the process. He was wondering if I wanted my fiancee to know how much I was spending or what my timeline was, etc. Then he sent us on our way to look around. Because I said that I wanted a little bit of mystery to the process, after we had browsed for a bit he pulled me aside to ask a few more questions and to get a little more detail about what I was thinking. I told him that I had already bought a ring but that I would need a diamond. The point of having my fiancee look around was just to keep her in the dark. David explained that this wasn't his first rodeo in this situation. After we were finished looking around David pulled us into an office to give us the sales pitch on diamonds and help my lady narrow down her ring choices. A futile task but David played along. Once he showed us a couple of diamonds he asked my fiancee to leave so we could talk about the costs. We ran through things and it all sounded good. I put down a small deposit on a diamond. Their diamond prices live up to their advertising. They're less than a regular retail price and about 10-20% higher than wholesale. The quality is good and they certify everything. The only thing they didn't offer was setting the diamond in my ring, but David did give me a card for a jeweler he recommends. While I ended up getting a diamond somewhere else and cancelling my deposit I would still recommend anyone else giving these guys a shot. You get to pick up any rings and look without being hassled or watched constantly by a sales. I love how you get to pick the exact diamond you want. The possibilities are endless and are for any person with lots of money or little. When I got my soon to be wife's ring made, it was exquisite it stands out from other rings at other jewellers. Unfortunately me nor my wife knew she was actually allergic nickel, which is commonly used in white gold rings. I thought this was going to be a huge problem. But thankfully spence was able to remake the ring in nickel free. I just had to pay the difference. Which wasn't that bad. On other notes I would like to comment about how Spence is with customer service. At first it was a minor problem for me, sometimes they wouldn't call when my ring was being made ect. Last time I was in though I told them this and it all seemed to change. They call me when they need to, and the salesman that I've recently been talking to gave me his card and personal cell#. Which I thought was awesome. I could text him at 11pm and he would reply. Obviously I would only text him about the ring and concerns with it. Proposed to my lady and she said yes. Now, it's ring-buying time. We had a good budget but my love had her heart set on a sapphire. We stopped at Spence cause we knew we could pick the ring, with or without the centre stone. It's like they advertised, you can go in, walk around and grab any of the rings and keep them with you to compare to others. They're all fake, but look pretty damn real. I have to believe that more than one of these fakes have made their way out the front door. All and all, the store was unique and even an enjoyable experience. However, the sales lady that attached herself to us, left a lot to be desired. I understand they work on commision, so I get the constant hovering and I did appreciate some of her suggestions, but the 1st thing I did when we entered the store was tell her our budget and then for the next hour she regularly kept showing us rings WAYYY over our limit (by a $1000 and more over) and after I told her that I would not be interested in applying for financing, she kept bringing it up. Finally, and surprisingly, I spotted a ring and show my fiance. She loved it and we went and spoke to the rep. We sat down and explained that we wanted a sapphire instead of a diamond. She said that they only work with diamonds and that the ring could be sold without it, but we had to go through her 20 minute upsell pitch on their "100% real artisan diamonds" as an affordable alternative. But we were set on the sapphire, so finally the agent started our order. The base ring was a 14K white gold with 6 side diamonds that were S2 rating and that the ring without the centre stone would be a flat price of $1,850. Now my girl is all about the 19K white gold so she asked how much extra it would be to upgrade from the 14K. Turns out, its the same price. Why this clerk did not disclosure this information, when we were almost ready to pay for the ring, is beyond me. Well, since this was a free upgrade, I decided asked if the side diamonds could be upgraded as well. Sure was, improved all 6 to VS1 stone...all for the exact same price as the 14K, less quality stones. Not impressed with this clerk. Keep this in mind if you're planning to do the same type of thing with a different centre stone. Ask for the free upgrades and if you like the white gold, go for the 19K. It's actually stronger that the 14K and it's a Canadian invention :) read more

When I finally found what I was looking for the salesperson made me feel terrible that my choice was from the anniversary band section rather than the engagement ring section. Never mind that's exactly what I wanted. When I wanted to think it over he chastised me and used scare tactics to try to get me to buy it right then and there. The products here are of terrible quality and the customer service is astonishingly poor. Long story short, we were treated great before we bought the ring. The ring was poorly constructed and they got a bunch of chances to fix it, but couldn't do it properly. Then they seemed shocked when we wanted a refund (it was past the return policy's deadline). We finally got our money back, but it took a ton of arguing. The sad thing is that most of the floor staff are great (they all agreed the quality was unacceptable) but they are virtually powerless. The management there is a joke. They should fire the management and promote some of the floor staff. I think Spence's philosophy is to have tight policies so that even if the customer isn't happy they get to keep the money. Perhaps someone should tell them that people tend to go back to places with good customer service and more lenient policies, not places that take your money then kick you to the curb. read more

My fiancé bought my engagement ring from Spence, I was the one who suggested going there since their commercials were catchy and they seemed friendly enough when we both went in to look at rings. I am absolutely in love with my ring, HOWEVER I was so extremely disappointed in the customer service. When I got my ring it was too big, we went in to get it sized and placed in a different setting. I was asked if I knew my ring size, I said I did not, and I was handed a key chain essentially that had every ring size on it from the smallest women's to the largest mans. I made a comment on it being heavy and asked if I could take a ring off and was told no. I picked a size of ring I thought fit, but 2 weeks later when the ring came in it was still too big. I asked them if there was any way I could try on my a ring that was a size 4 or 4.25 I was told no. The ring was currently at a 4.5, and I was unsure whether to go down half a size or not. When I asked I was told that no one in the store could tell me how my ring should fit. This was surprising seeing as Spence advertises that they are the ring experts, yet no one could help me with the sizing. I had an employee just staring at me not saying a single thing, when I was asking her opinion. I was told that "the girls are trained not to give advice so they aren't blamed when the ring doesn't fit". I have never worn a ring in my life, I have no idea HOW it should fit, but my ring was completely sliding off my finger yet they let me walk out.... TWICE. Even after resizing two different times down to a 4.25 its still too big. I am frustrated and annoyed, and was basically lead to believe that it was no ones fault but my own, which may be true. Maybe I should know my size, but my friends who have gone other places were treated much better, were given advice and have engagement rings that fit just right. I will be getting my ring resized but at a different establishment. Each time I left Spence I left feeling frustrated and blamed. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. My fiancé spent a lot of money there and we were left feeling like an annoyance. I would not recommend Spence to anyone, there are tons of other places that sell pretty rings that actually care about their customers. read more

Shane Ewert from Spence helped answer all my questions and explained the details regarding buying a diamond. However, the price I was quoted for the stone I chose was $4293.00. It is rediculously overinflated compared to a near-identical stone from bluenile.ca, which was just under $2900.00. here are the details: Round shape 0.61 carat H colour VS1 clarity excellent cut with very small culet medium to thick girdle diameter 5.36 - 5.41mm depth 3.37mm table 56.6% pavilion 42.9% crown 35.7% I know, no two diamonds are the same. But all of these diamonds are graded using the same GIA standard. I did buy from bluenile and am very satisfied, both with the quality and the fact that I paid 30% less. Spence claims to have "great pricing", but compared to who? I do not recommend them for purchasing a diamond. read more

We bought a silver necklace and diamond pendant there and eventually had the necklace custom made to a longer length. There were no extensions included on the chain. Just one full chain. All was good. Then a couple years later, the necklace broke. When we went back to get it repaired they said no problem. However, their records didn't show that the chain was custom made, or what the length of the chain was. They showed the original length prior to the final purchase of the custom necklace. We were surprised that they didn't have the information, given that it was purchased there. They even denied that they could do the chain in the length we had done. They tried to tell us they could only provide a shorter chain. We said no. They called us down saying the chain was done and when we got there we realized that they tried to pawn us off to a chain with an added extension. We said no. They then said they would get it done within a week. After a week, we called them and they didn't have the chain but tried again to give us a shorter one. After struggling with them by now we decided to simply take the shorter chain, which they said was one inch shorter than the original. When we got the chain we realized that they didn't even measure the original chain (the one that broke) to confirm the length and ended up giving us a chain 4 inches shorter than the original. We've asked for the original broken chain back so we can go somewhere else to get the chain done and now they are telling us that they aren't sure if they have the original chain anymore. They're looking for it. read more

Spence offered great value, and I had a wonderful experience selecting the ring. They were even kind enough to give me a store display ring similar to the one I ordered so I could propose with it. Unfortunately, my engagement didn't go as smooth, and after a couple years of not marrying for various reasons, I was given the ring back and dissolved the relationship. Doing so required a large cash settlement, so I was strapped for money, and decided I might just as well return the ring to Spence. When I took the ring back into the store, the gentlemen (I wish I could remember his name - a tall fellow with a beard and moustache) I gave it to initially tried to tell me that the ring was not longer within the buy back period. After I protested, and he read the documentation again he corrected himself. I actually had 5 months remaining. He gave the ring and documentation to the girl at the reception desk and instructed her to take care of it. I asked her if I would get a receipt for the ring, and she printed me off a customer statement showing the amount of the buy back and informed me that head office would be issuing the cheque, and they were quite slow so it would be about two weeks. While Ii wasn't thrilled by the amount of the buy back (it doesn't include the GST I paid on the ring and it also didn't cover the setting (platinum). It was better than I was told I could expect to get trying to sell it privately, so I took the deal. I turned in the ring July 12th, 2010. On Aug. 20 I called to find out why I hadn't been called to pickup my cheque or had received anything in the mail. Heather said she didn't have a cheque for me. I gave her my cell # and she said she would have to send in a fax to find out what the status was, and call me back, hopefully by the end of the day. On Aug. 23rd I called again because I hadn't heard from Heather. I spoke to Shelly. She checked shipments from Head Office (HO) for cheque. She checked Heather's email and the reply to Heather's previous inquiry said that the HO in Vancouver is waiting for the proper paperwork from the diamonds appraisal division to issue the cheque. She said she would follow up with another email and give me a call She apologized for the 5 week delay and Heather not calling me. I told her while I appreciate that she was sorry it didn't do me a lot of good. I was paying interest on money I had borrowed because I hadn't received these funds yet. I asked to speak to someone in charge to see what they would do for me. Scott called me on at 10:46am on the 24th. He told me that the ring buy back agreement was subject to me returning the item with all the original paperwork. According to their head office, I hadn't supplied the original purchase order detailing the diamond characteristics etc. I told him I had returned everything I had received originally in the original box for the paperwork. In fact I returned the ring in it's original box, and still had the original bag. All of it had been sitting in a drawer for 4.5 years. He claimed I didn't not meet the conditions for the buy back and that if I couldn't product the paperwork, they could not proceed. I told him I couldn't prove that he did receive the paperwork because I didn't make copies, and he couldn't prove he didn't. I said IMHO the least he could do for taking 5 weeks to tell me what I should have been told the day I returned the ring, was to make an exception, but he refused. I even argued that the paper he was requesting was generated by the Spence computer system, so they had all the information on file. He insisted it was a required condition for the buy back. He said he would look around there to see if my paperwork was at the Spence office and asked me to look for it as well and inform him either way. So now I have no ring in my possession, and am told they will not buy it back. On top of that, my trust of Spence has been so shaken I'm concerned that the ring I will be picking up from their office may not even be the one I purchased. How am I to know that the diamond wasn't changed? They changed their mind about honouring their buy back guarantee despite the fact that one of their employees could have trashed my paperwork. She was apparently fired because of issues like this. Think twice before you buy from Spence, and if you do have to use their buy back guarantee, make sure you keep copies of all your paperwork before you give them anything. read more

April B I am definitely a very unhappy Spence Diamonds customer. We purchased a ring from Spence's in Calgary approx 5 1/2 yrs ago, in the $12,000 range. Since then we have had my ring repaired 4 times. Twice for a loose center marquis stone, and twice for replacement of princess diamonds that fell out. I have faithfully taken my ring to Spences in Calgary for an annual inspection, and have always been told that the ring is beautiful and in perfect condition. Much to my surprise when I had it re-appraised a couple of months ago by Spence for my 5 year insurance policy, I was told that 4 of the princess diamonds were chipped. There was no mention of this problem when my ring was inspected in 2009. I do not wear my ring to do housecleaning, washing dishes or any other reason that Spence's tells me could have caused the problem. Another significant point is the setting around each of these 4 diamonds is not damaged in any way. So how could this have happened.......? I have not received a satisfactory answer from Spence's. As a matter of fact they never return our calls, we have to continue to track them down to get any information, and every time we reach the front desk, or Scott, apparently someone was to have gotten back to us. Anyway I remain very suspicious about the diamonds that Spence's has used to replace the ones that fell out. Not only it is my gut reaction that my diamonds have been replaced with chipped ones, but also the fact that the store manager Scott Hendrickson, suggested that if our diamonds could be recut and used in a different setting, they could give us a discount on the repair. This apparently means that repairs can be made from diamonds laying around their studio. I am embarrased to admit to anyone that Spence's doesn't stand behind our $12,000 purchase. I might add that shortly after the ring purchase we also bought a pair of earrings for $800, so we had the potention of being good customers for Spence Diamonds. I will never shop at Spence's again, and would definitely not recommend the store to any of my friends. It appears that Spence's would rather spend their time and energy getting new customers instead of keeping their current customers happy. read more

I am writing so that others who shop at Spence Diamonds might consider shopping elsewhere. Yes I think that they are very informative when purchasing diamonds BUT they are incompetent when it comes to placing that diamond in a ring (which needs to be done as all the diamonds are bought loose). My fiancee had purchased a diamond and had the ring made at Spence. The day it was ready it came in with the diamond crooked (he was proposing that night). The staff convinced him to take it and propose and immediatly after return the ring so it could be fixed. Well it was "fixed" 5 times now (2 months without the ring) and it still came back unrepaired. Im not a picky person but 5 times is unacceptable. After 2 months of this we were offered a supper for our troubles......it was more like a slap in the face especially when no one ever returned phone calls about the ring and the blame was being put on someone different each time the ring came back unfixed. (We have yet to receive that supper) If they couldnt fix a ring in 5 tries, they sure as hell wouldnt be able to get it right the sixth time. After telling them we were taking our business elsewhere we were refunded part of the money but after 1 week we have still not received the cancellation from the finance company.......apparently, Spence still has not faxed the paperwork over. This is completely unacceptable because it was all supposed to be done last week when the ring was returned. If you want to waste 2 months of your time and unacceptable customer service, visit Spence. If you want a stressfree engagement experience take your business elsewhere. We have yet to receive an apology and are still trying to get the final paperwork completed. read more

My fiancé bought my engagement ring there. When I went back with him for sizing, the service was great. They basically went through all the diamond education again, this time for my benefit. I have gone back and had the ring cleaned, which they do with a smile no problem. We will be getting the wedding band there as well. read more
