Went for Beer Appreciation Society night and had a good time. Met lots of new faces and tried some new beers too! The Globe Pub is a great place to try a bunch of beers, maybe some from breweries you've heard of, but more exclusive to good pubs like the Globe. I enjoyed the Goose Island "Pere Jacques". So nice, I drank it twice! The Bell's Cherry Stout was interesting. A tiny bit bitter, with the cherry becoming more pronounced the more I drank it. She got the way to move me, Cherry Baby! The Globe is a good place to come watch your favorite football match. Yes, they show all the matches on flat screens high above you. Chelsea! Chelsea! Our server was incredible. I go back and forth with this place. If you're an obnoxious soccer fan, this is the spot for you. Hell, if you're an obnoxious sports fan, this is the spot for you. Service can be spotty. Actually, the only time service was great was when we were in the back bar area by ourselves. The air conditioning hadn't been working and everyone was crowded up front watching the Blackhawks game. We watched it in the back, with no one around to annoy us by speaking. Suckers. The only reason I liked this bar was for the food. However, even that is spotty. Fries are either over done or soggy. Burgers are way too salty. Salads have wilted lettuce. On the other hand, when things are good, they tend to be good all around. I think I'm done giving them chances for awhile. This place probably has the longest beer menu that I have ever seen! Pretty much seems like a sports bar but that is not a bad thing since I like to watch sports while I drink. I tried the banana flavored German beer which did not taste like banana....it tasted like Hacker-Pshorr (not really complaining). I also tried the Cherry stout which was more of a heavier beer. I came here on 4/23 for a date/to celebrate Shakespeare's birthday. Alas, they had no special events planned that evening. I was ready to do some recitations! But they did have $4 pints of Belhaven, a lovely beer which one does not see on draft very often. I had been here for drinks a few times and obviously their beer menu is excellent, too many to read actually. In March, their beer of the month was Beamish (a favorite of mine). They seem to have good monthly and daily specials. The food is traditional generic pub fare, and traditional British pub fare. For the occasion, I wanted something thoroughly English and chose the shepherd's pie. Slightly greasy but very good. Although, the mashed-potato top was not browned as indicated on the menu. They give you a fair-sized bowl of this stuff, and even my gluttonous self could not finish more than half. My date had the chicken pot pie, chock full of vegetables and pretty darn good. We also shared some onion rings (of which I am a connoisseur) which earned a B. There's not much else to say about The Globe that others haven't already. Came here a cold night a month or so ago. Wanted to grab a bite to eat while over near my buddies place, and heard this place was good. Several different food options, and a nice beer list. Only negative thing was the service. The waitress never asked how anything was; generally took a long time to bring us anything, or pay any attention to us really. We were the only table in the back so it wasn't busy by any means. Also the check was for over $70 so I was planning to leave a nice tip from the get go.. Oh well. This pub is a hub for soccer fans in the city. I was drawn here to watch the World Cup Final match recently, and the atmosphere was perfect. All of the rooms in the pub were filled to capacity with passionate fans, many sporting a variety of international soccer jerseys to match the memorabilia displayed on the walls. I go to the Globe Pub to get my footie fix. There are other pubs in Chicago that have the same packages that Globe Pub receives. In fact some are known nationwide. What separates the Globe Pub from all of them is for whatever reason Globe Pub hires people who seem to genuinely care that you got to see your match. No matter what obscure team you support, if it is available Globe Pub will play it for you on the telly. This accompanied by the friendly staff makes it worth every while. This however is just one of the many reasons I like Globe Pub. My second love is beer and once a month Globe Pub will have beer school... No I don't mean the kind where you try to guzzle down as many as your body can handle, rather this is a poor mans "wine tasting". They focus on craft brews from the US. So if footie is not your cup of tea, stop in to learn about some really good beers that may be in your back yard. This is how I learned about Demolition afterall. The food to be honest is slightly above your usual pub grub. You will get a good meal but you will not write about it on yelp. An interesting evening of drinking beers I've never heard of but really enjoyed and a wee bit of a headache the next morning, that's what! Stop in to this English style bar and say hi to Stewart- the owner. He will happily share with you his love of beer and make suggestions for you. If you can't find Stewart- our bartender Aubrey was also amazing. She certainly knows her stuff about beer. She even went into a back room to find a beer my friend was looking for but didn't see on the menu. And she found it! The only downside? The refrigeration on the tap beer was not nearly cool enough for this hot night. At that point- Aubrey suggested we move to bottled beer and all was well. Check it out. Could I give this place 0 stars? TERRIBLE service. Went with a few friends who were interested in watching the UFC fight. I'm pregnant, and a few others in our group weren't drInking alcohol for their own personal reasons. No problem, we realize it's a big night for the bar and order our cokes/ginger ales, etc. while those who decided to drink alcohol ordered theirs as well. About 20 mins of our group being inside, the bartenders begin harassing members of our party for not buying "drinks" and say we need to leave if we are just going to stand around taking up space from paying customers... but we were paying.... just too many of our group didn't purchase alcohol specifically so THAT was the problem I guess. If feels like -2 outside this evening and some jerk employee is yelling at the 30 week pregnant girl that we need to leave. Bartenders refusing to serve anything to our party that isn't alcohol. "Can I have 2 cokes?" "Just coke?? Sorry, I'm all out" literal interaction for my friend with their bartender. One of their fine gentlemen told me, "look.. this is a BAR. Plenty of people would be in here paying and we payed a lot of money to show this fight" Dude.. get over yourself. You can't force people to drink alcohol so your margins are better. If you are looking for an ill-mannered, racist establishment with terrible service, aggressive staff members and sticky floors, look no further - The Globe Pub is perfect for you. Everyone else, I strongly advise you to walk 30 feet down the street to the next bar. I had the misfortune of being a patron of The Globe Pub a week ago and what I experienced was unequivocally discriminatory. I was with a group of my cousins/friends to watch the UFC fight. Out of the blue, a staff member confronted our group and demanded that we all get a drink in our hand or "get out the f*** out." For the record, the majority of our group was indeed drinking; in fact, many of us were on our 2nd or 3rd drink. The other select few who were not drinking chose not to do so for personal reasons. Not that an explanation is owed, but the reasons that certain individuals were not drinking alcohol only demonstrates just how vile, inappropriate and discriminatory The Globe Pub staff's behavior was. One of the individual's in our group was pregnant, another just had a baby weeks ago and was still breastfeeding, and another was abstaining from alcohol. To instruct patrons that they MUST order alcoholic drinks or get out is wildly inappropriate, inherently unethical and likely to end up in a lawsuit. As you can imagine, we were shocked and embarrassed as no other patrons were singled out, questioned or harassed. Nevertheless, our group was respectful and attempted to oblige. Those who were not drinking alcohol, attempted to order non-alcoholic beverages from the bar, for which the bartender replied "stop wasting my time, get a real drink or get the fuck out." Around the same time, the staff member who previously confronted our group approached us again, but this time he brought back up. Him and a second staff member got in our faces, cursed at us and demanded everyone who didn't have a drink in their hand at that very moment needed to get out. One of the staff members also stated that he had to "turn 30 people away" and that there were "plenty of other paying customers." Interestingly enough, we were standing near the door and had clear visibility to the windows, yet not a single customer (let alone 30) attempted to enter the establishment. As the situation escalated further, staff members started to kick out individuals in our group on the spot without explanation. One of the staff members knowingly kicked out a pregnant woman, who then was forced to stand in 14-degree weather. Apparently realizing the enormous blunder he had just made, the staff member grumbled, "Ok the pregnant girl can come back inside." Sorry bud, a little too late on that one. At that point, our group had enough and exited. The bar was packed and while it was difficult to get a drink, we all made the same level of effort to get a drink as surrounding Caucasian customers. The only common denominator within our group was that we were primarily non-caucasian patrons. The staff's behavior not only made us feel uncomfortable, but several patrons around us empathized and pointed out how the staffs behavior seemed racially motivated. In fact, a patron that was at The Globe Pub that night wrote her FIRST review on Yelp outlining the discrimination she witnessed (Kassidy M, Review left on 1/20/2020). For a stranger to feel compelled to write a review on what she witnessed speaks volumes as to the antagonistic, vile behavior that we were subjected to. Megan K. - if you are planning to reply to this comment, as I suspect you will given your replies to other reviews in connection with this incident, please do not copy and paste your boilerplate apology to me. Instead, please explain to me what actions you took to prevent this situation from ever occurring again, what disciplinary action you took against the two staff members and what racial sensitivity training you are going to enact for your establishment. As you previously stated, no one could reasonably expect someone who is pregnant to order alcohol - yet your staff members DID expect a pregnant woman to order a drink before proceeding kicking her out in 14 degree weather. Unfortunately, the conversation about what is or isn't reasonable is no longer relevant as your staff clearly lacks the cognitive ability to differentiate between the two. Lastly, I will reiterate the request for a personal apology from the two staff members. Given the shockingly inappropriate behavior of your staff, this is not an unreasonable request. While you are correct in your assertion that Yelp does not offer video capabilities, there are endless options you could utilize. Sad to see that this place was forcefully downsized. It is a little cramped but still workable. We came in and grabbed a table for our group. We were greeted by Karl or is it Carl. Karl was awesome. He knew our names after the first try, he knew our drinks after the first try, and he engaged and conversed like a great bartender. One thing you can always count on at the Globe Pub are great beer rotations and soccer. Funny how even the patrons are super awesome to be around. You just get a friendly and welcoming vibe where you are in here. Only issue was the temperature...but on one of the early cold days of the season....that is to be expected. We showed up at different times over a couple of hours and sat at two different tables. I was asked for a card straight away with my order, the waitress didn't ask if I wanted a separate tab she assumed I did so I assumed I was being treated as such...i.e. no gratuity added. I was in the industry for a good long time so I consider myself a reasonable tipper. I don't object to the surcharge just not being told. _______________________________________________________________ Gotta say, very disappointed. We were there last night, a group of 12, we had seven checks. When I went to record the bill today I discovered an 18% gratuity. I expect this for a group of 6 or more, but in all the years given everyone had their own tab I have never seen it applied to individual bills. At the very least I would have expected the staff to point it out. My waitress ended up with a $16 tip on a $35 bill. I have been a regular at the bar for more than a decade. I remember this place being better. I always thought The Globe was a decent bar with a wide selection of beers, some decent food and pretty friendly all around. I was there this past Tuesday for their trivia night. The drink special wasn't bad, a buck off flying dog bottles but their food special was a Philly cheese steak which they were quick to point out didn't have onions or peppers on it. Trivia was as popular as ever and our server changed, and it was very difficult to get the waitress' attention. I don't attribute it to her, she gamely tried to keep up with an entire back section all by her lonesome. She weaved in and out trying to keep up with demand, but it was like that scene in Titanic where the band kept playing as the ship kept sinking: brave, but doomed because of mismanagement from the top; there was easily 40ish people and 1 server for the entire section? Where's the logic in that, it just hurts your employee. I really wanted onions and peppers in my sandwich so I ended up ordering their steak dip, it was forgettable. The sandwich itself was bland and I used up all the au jus before I was even halfway done with the sandwich. I've been a fan of the Globe for about a year now. Ever since I started rooting for the Fire, I've become an even bigger fan. The Globe has -atmosphere -a huge beer selection (along with descriptions for us non-beer aficionados.) -A couple of the bartenders I've dealt with are particularly knowledgeable about the beers, which helps a lot when venturing into new taste territories -consistently good food from the kitchen (albeit on the pricier side) -like minded football (soccer) fans -a clean, kept up appearance. No divey-ness here. Overall, if you looked hard enough, I'm sure you'll find something that you won't like, but on the overall scorecard, the Globe has a much better atmosphere than some other places I've been to. To note: I've not been here when at "World Cup" capacity (but close,) nor the trivia night. But yes, it is a bit on the mellower side. I only come here because Ryan is a big Arsenal fan. Usually I'm here in the morning for games so I've only tried their breakfast food which is solid! Really good and their English breakfast is legit. Their selection of beer is huge!!! Their menus break down beers by style and all the bartenders/waiters are helpful if you're unsure what you want. For the past couple months they've been under construction, I believe they're moving the kitchen and closing the west side/extension of the bar. So it can get pretty crowded but it's worth it for the soccer games! My only gripe is the restrooms, it smells like dirty water! I feel bad criticising a Soccer bar but like a mosquito you have to slap it so it'll stop sucking. The service is bad. Extremely slow and off. My partner and I sat and ordered drinks. He wanted a Daisy Cutter which they don't have (?) and she recommended a different beer. I got a foo foo martini which still had chunks of ice in it. She asked how his beer was while tidying the high top next to us. But didn't acknowledge me. That's a bit off (he thought I was throwing her under the bus when I mentioned it to him). But I served before and a family member served for 20 years. It's seems pandering when a couple dines to only address the male in the party. There was a loooong wait for our food which would normally take like twelve minutes to prepare. He got the globe burger with no cheese and fries. I got the Reuben and mashed potatoes. He thought the burger was really greasy and he could make one better at home. The Reuben was an embarrassment to Reubens from delis, restaurants, even guys named Reuben should take umbrage at the disrespect. It was literally dripping wet with grease and the bread was soggy. I put it on my partners hand and a puddle of oil collected on it. Barely a dab of sauerkraut and 3 slices of corned beef! Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Reubens a hearty sandwich and isn't corned beef a fairly inexpensive meat?!? So why serve me a greasy grilled cheese with a bit of lunch meat? Mashed potatoes were prefab ice creamed scoops of bland. I'm not asking for them to be infused with truffle oil or whipped with organic herbs, but for petes sake use some butter or cream. It was like lukewarm pabulum served at a nursing home for senile old timers who forget the mush they just shoveled in their maws. After we ate we felt immediate remorse so ordered another round. He got a black and tan. They had no Harp. He pointed out the prominent Harp sign and she suggested Stella as a replacement (um why?) and I got a Cider. Again we waited a very long time. She brought our drinks and he had a Guinness mixed with cider. It took forever to flag her down to mention he got the wrong drink. Then to get the right one. We had to wait forever for the check, then for her to bring the change. I think she charged him for both drinks too. Ugh. The music was fantastic. Everyone mentions the extensive beer list but there's TONS of places with that now. And they didn't have 2 common beers!! It's worth mentioning the prices are way TOO MUCH! Horribad!! I went with a large group in November of this year, and they sat us in the back room with all the trivia-players even though we weren't participating in that. They have a large selection of beers, BUT, I ordered two beers over the course of the evening, and the second beer was super-expensive and was stale--it gave me a horrendous headache and aches the next day (not a hangover). I very, very rarely get headaches, and knew it must be that beer and that it must have been stale/bad. If that weren't bad enough, the service was atrocious. The server was rarely around, and was slow and rude. I ordered chips and guac, and the dish came with maybe 10 chips, and a small spat of guac, which wasn't very good (and I normally love avocado/guac). I also ordered soup, and asked for bread with it. When I got the final bill it was $32! For 2 beers, chips and guac, and soup! I looked at the bill by line and noticed something for which I was charged $1. When I finally got to call over the waitress and ask her what that was, she rudely and defiantly told me that was for the slice of bread! Beer Appreciation Society Unites! This place has an uncanny selection of beer on their menu... yet somehow I managed to *try* and order 3 of the beers that they're out of- Boo! After my first 3 choices were nixed, I went with a plain but reliable Gumballhead from Three Floyd's. My next beer had something to do with apple and was described as having "apple notes" but tasted like a liquefied sour apple jolly rancher- not beer, and my third beer was a German style hefeweizen but from Japan that tasted a bit skunky. I have a feeling I may have been the first person to order that beer in a very long time. Beyond that, I was pretty impressed. Our server was rockin' and I have no idea how she would remember all our beer orders, who they belonged to, and how much each cost... plus she was super hot. Score! And to top it off, the music was rockin', they totally played sex dwarf which was welcome since I was skipping a Neo night to come here. So last Friday night I ended up at The Globe on Irving Park Road with three of my girlfriends. I sauntered up to the bar to order the first round, which was $21. I handed the bartender $40, and the trouble began. She screeches, "You gave me $40!" And I'm all like, "I know. Keep the change." (Side note: If I'm doing the buying, I always tip big the first round so I know I'll get good service all night. This strategy has never failed until now.) So this bartender says that I can't tip her $19. I'm just staring at her, positively amazed that someone is telling me what I can and cannot tip them. So I tell her to just give me $10 back if it's such a big deal. But does it end there? No. In the snottiest tone possible, she says, "That's just obnoxious. I'll give you $15 back." To make matters worse, she's talking to me like this in front of another patron. The whole exchange was just mind-boggling. Here is someone working in a service industry who DOESN'T want to make money? WTF? It's not like I was tipping her with the expectation that she was going to blow me or something. Learn a little graciousness for christ's sake. This whole experience really ruined this place for me, and it's too bad, because it's not a bad bar otherwise. read more

Who needs the love of one woman at 7:00 a.m. when you can have the love of eleven men at the same time? Wait, that didn't come out right (they're Nick Hornby's words in "Fever Pitch" anyway, not mine - mostly). If I had the love of one woman, I probably wouldn't have spent Valentine's morning watching my beloved Fulham underachieve and barely escape to fight another day in the FA Cup. But as it stands the one love that has stood by me, that of footcer at The Globe Pub, was an amazing one as always. . The Globe Pub has been voted best soccer bar in the United States by ovewhelming margins two years in a row. Note that doesn't mean best bar and I can't vouche for it after noon; but there is no sports bar in the city (even other soccer bars) that cares about soccer more. Come in here before noon on a Saturday and it's the same experience as being in a supporters' bar in the United Kingdom watching the game. Even for a 6:45 a.m. match, people will have dragged themselves out of bed (some still drunk) and will be singing and chanting along. The conversation that takes place is either about soccer or people just shut up and watch the television. There are no douchebagettes just jibber-jabbering on mindlessly. The televisions have the featured match turned loud - unless there are two or even three matches going on simultaneously - but sometimes the fans are even louder. Especially if there's an Everton (the bar's main team) match on, in which case it's sheer mayhem. But the icing on the Valentine's (or any other day) cupcake is that knowing where its toast is buttered, The Globe's breakfast menu (which goes straight on through 2:00 p.m. when the late match ends) is spectacular. Again, I can't say what The Globe's dinner menu is like (or even their lunch) but in the morning their food and hair of the dog beer (or cider) is tops! Almost as good as breakfast in bed. My friend and I decided to try the place out last night for the Bears Thursday Night Football game and were not only disappointed but at times were borderline outraged. This was due to one fact - the shitty ass service. Monica was our server (term used loosely) and it took her 45 minutes to get our beer and food orders after we sat down. Granted, it looked like she was the only employee serving the entire back room, but come on guys. Get another server back there already. It's a Bears game, for the love. Our food was tolerable but I would not go so far as to say it was good. We were thrilled to eat though, by the time it got to our table. I will say that they have A TON of flatscreen tv's throughout the place, so it's a pretty ideal situation to watch sports and check out their extensive selection of beers. Atmosphere: 1 Star I went to watch the reply of the World Cup Semi-Finalist Game between Spain and Germany after work. I was told it would be replayed on at 4pm and 7pm. When I got there at 4:30 the game wasn't on so I requested it and they were nice enough to put it up with no sound. I asked two employees if they could add the sound and was told no. Apparently listening to club hits from Lady GaGa and her ilk was more important at a sports bar. Oh, and then there was the musical show tunes and country songs that they blared at mind numbing volumes. Then there was the bartender n the back who spent the whole time I was there complaining about her life and at one point screamed, "F-Spain and flipped a double bird at the Hispanic Dishwasher as he walked by." Being a fairly smart fellow I suddenly realized who won the game before seeing it. There are some classy employees at the Globe... Food: 4 Stars I ordered the Sheppard's pie and it was good. At $9.50 it wasn't the cheapest food on the planet but the price and quality matched up. Drinks: 4.5 Stars There is an outstanding selection of drinks to choose from at this pub. Very few places have more quality choices. Overall: 2 Stars Based on the atmosphere this places deserves one star but I feel that if I had come at a different time or maybe next year (a.k.a. better employees on duty) I would really enjoy this pub. At the same time who has heard Lady GaGa "sing" about her desire for magic sticks enough? Maybe I'm just not cool enough to understand that the customer isn't always right. read more
