For such a small town, there's lots of history. Shipping was big in the area, until the railroads came along. Freighters actually loaded up in the area, and waterways led to the Red River, which led to New Orleans, which led to the ocean. Who would of thought you could take a ship from north Texas to the ocean. Amazing! This used to be the courthouse and the post office. There are 3 floors of amazing artifacts. Next door , the Railroad Society has a huge setup, but we didn't get to see it. Next time! Take the time to see the history of this area. You'll enjoy it!

The building is constructed entirely of rock salt (yes, you can lick the building if you wish) and inside is a small museum that contains salt mining memorabilia and photographs as well as film of the Morton Salt mining operations. You get a free salt crystal as a take away and I bought a fridge magnet for my collection. I spent about 20-30 minutes here, enjoying the memorabilia, learning about salt and salt mining and chatting with a wonderful woman who clearly has a passion about Morton Salt and Grand Saline. I'm super happy that this quirky little spot landed as my 16000th review. If you are driving along I-20 east of Dallas/Fort Worth, this treasure is a 12 mile detour that will take you about 20 minutes out of your way. It's totally worth it. When you enter, you can choice to go right or left, two sides to the center. To the right is a few games, (such as connect four), life size light bright, and a cool vacuum that you put fluff balls in and watch how it filters through the vacuum suction tubes. You can walk through the volcano and experience what an earthquake could possibly feel like. Walk all the way up to the ship deck and see the world. Down on the main floor, my granddaughter loved learning the magic of being on television. When coming in, if you turned left, you enter the world of life skills and career options. The makeshift grocery store is very realistic and makes it fun for kids to learn to shop and organize. The kids can pretend to work in medical clinics, veterinarian clinics, restaurant personnel (food prep/chef/server), be an astronaut and explore the outer world, firefighter, police officer, lawyer, and/or judge, medical specialist, and more. There is a separate room for birthdays or gatherings. There is a very low price of $10 pre adult/student and discounts offered for seniors and military. There are certainly a few Charles Russell and Frederic Remington works, but also a nice Chagall and a host of others conducive to pondering. The Norton is not tiny, but is the kind of manageable size that allows one to savor a bit more. And it's free! The grounds are a second full attraction -- think of the best spot in town to sit and read. While we visited and enjoyed them in the winter, they are set up to be spectacular in the spring, with a host of azaleas and others in a rolling setting. Wonderful.

The path around the gardens is tranquil nonetheless and open to the public. The museum is free, highly recommend donating on your way out. We will certainly be bringing out of town relatives back to this gem!

The museum is very well presented and well kept. The artifacts on display are simply amazing! You get to walk through the hall of presidents, and then view Americas history through the cost of war. Starting with revolutionary war and the build up to it through the Afghanistan conflict. There is more to see and read than can be taken in in one visit. We spent several hours in there, and even as a bit of a history buff myself, I walked away with some new information.
