A couple years back I got some not-good tamales, but when I saw the vendor this week I was like "yes, these are the good tamales!!!" When we entered an hour before closing, we made the mistake to sit and pause to look over the menu. It was a mistake because it seemed like the front door kept swinging open as wave after wave of hungry visitors poured in. My guess is these folks were all returning from Joshua Tree National Park. In fact, it felt like nearly everyone there had just come from the park. The business concept appears thoughtfully geared toward travelers, particularly those with a bit of disposable income and a discerning palate. The owners of the business buy directly from local and regional farmers which keeps the price lower than a supermarket can offer. They also offer produce grown in their adjacent micro-farm, as well as locally baked bread, local and regional honey, and locally prepared granolas. As far as specific produce goes, they have the basic staples of potatoes, carrots, greens, squash and zucchini, radishes, celery, corn, tomatoes, lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, apples, bananas, mangoes, plums and avocados, but they also have a rotating selection of more unique or exotic fruit and vegetable varieties that you might only find in very specialized markets. Today we saw gorgeous, gigantic heirloom beefsteak tomatoes, huge colorful dragon fruit, Cara Cara oranges and some of the biggest, brightest strawberries I've ever seen! The $2 table is the best deal around when you know you're ready to cook or eat your produce right away. They carry both conventional and organic, but the selection changes from week to week. The people operating the business are extremely helpful and friendly, willing to answer all and any questions, and even share helpful hints on how to make your own garden more successful in the challenging growing zone of the high desert. The vibe is super cool with spots to hang out and relax, making it a great little detour while exploring Joshua Tree. The service was just as memorable--the woman helping us was incredibly kind and welcoming, and finding out she's the one who creates the teas and owns the shop made it even more special.
