If you think Italians are only good for GTL then you need to reintroduce yourself to their history! Everyone might know Jersey Shore, but not everyone appreciates this beautiful feast to honor a SAINT! You know how many people still don't know the 18th Avenue feast in Brooklyn is for St. Rosalia?! ::steps off Ronnie's shoulders:: Prepare yourselves to sweat this Giglio Sunday with the official lifting, dancing, and singing of the Boat and Giglio! Rumor has it that even God knows it's Giglio Sunday and that's why it never rains; I can't recall the last time it did and I've been coming since I was in the womb! The most delicious Italian street food to ever grace your happy mouth! Zeppoles, sausage and peppers, calzones with sweet ham that could make the angels cry is enough of a reason to come! This feast knows no race! Games, drinking, candles to be lit in our of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and go look inside that beautiful simple church, even if it's just for the AC. Beautiful people, beautiful singing, beautiful smells in the air, and beautiful men - young and old - sweating, flexing, dancing, chanting, and lifting the Giglio! I think I wrote my first softcore porn review! Look for me Sunday! I OWN the church steps! Let's have a calzone together! :)

If you're reading this, go to the Giglio Feast right now! Or tomorrow. Because tomorrow (7/16) is the last day for this year. I honestly had no idea this was a thing until a Yelp friend brought it up. If you're familiar with Italian feasts in NYC, then there's nothing that's out of the ordinary. I will say that they do have a good amusement ride selection. There's a Ferris wheel, a spinny thing, and one of those pendulum things where you go swing upside down. Everything's a bit expensive though. It was like $8 to go on the wheel. A couple of food options, way-too-expensive games, and at least one adorable dog.

Here is the staples - Lou ' s Clam Bar and Dee's Zeppoles. Done. Bring cash. They don't take credit card. Watch the lifting of the tower and you'll be amazed to see how many guys it takes to lift it up. It's kind of a spectacle but really amazing. I live on the block and I never miss it. I do dislike the carnies. ..they creep me out. After you are done go pay your respects at the church would ya?

Long ago, before the vegan restaurants, faux-dive bars, and million dollar condos, Williamsburg was a large community of working class Italian-Americans. Today, very little of that community remains, but we still have the Giglio festival, which I believe is the oldest "feast" observed in NYC. It's similar to San Gennaro, just not as over the top and a bit smaller in scale. Admittedly, I feel that over the years the festival has been marginalized; there are more than a few bad games and vendors, but there are many nice specialty trucks, offering sandwiches, cheese, ices, pastries and meat. On one hand, I am happy that the members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel continue the tradition of the feast. In my opinion, there aren't enough street fairs, in NYC, and despite the crowds, I do enjoy myself at these events. I'll pass on the $4.00 cups of mostly ice with a hint of "lemonade," but I'll eat at least one cannoli and a zeppole or two. The lifting of the tower is always fun to see and the atmosphere is generally positive. If I there was one thing I would change, I'd like it if some of the vendors would tone down the guido/GTL/mafioso attitude and focus more on la bella figura.

The Williamsburg Feast of San Paolino of Nola has been taking place for over 120 years. Over 120 men lift a 5 story statue (with a band and and others on it) around the streets in front of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Size wise, it does not compare to the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy. You have your food stands, some games , t-shirts etc. I give this feast 5 stars for carrying on this special Giglio tradition. I grew up going to the Feast of San Paolino in Fairview, NJ. This Fairview feast is long gone, but the Williamsburg Giglio keeps giong and helps me, even if only temporarily, relive some of the fond memories of my youth.

Gigantic arancini! One pesto and one broccoli rabe

Whoa! It's an Italian street festival! I've been wanting to go check it out for a couple of years, and finally made the trek to Williamsburg. It spans several blocks and has a ton of food stands, games and rides. Truthfully, this festival would have been more fun if I had kids or was a kid, but it was still worth going to. There were tons of rides and games, no idea how much it was to play, but the prizes seemed fun; lots of giant stuffed animals of every type. It smelled so good walking around that my stomach begged me to try some food. After walking through the whole fair to get an overview of the options, I set my heart (and stomach) on the arancini vendor. It was 2 for $8 or 3 for $10, so my boyfriend and I split the 3 arancini deal. We got pesto, broccoli rabe and sausage and peppers. The best one was clearly the pesto, but they all satisfied our craving for delicious Italian food. In the middle of each one was a big, melted cube of cheese. I wish I had gotten a photo cause it was very impressive!

Since this is a four day music festival I took advantage of all events occurring on each day/evening including the Bedford avenue block party (which was freel), the collabs between upcoming shows like TNT's Claws, Tidal, Wild honey Pie's Beehive event as well as the main stage with performers during the weekend. There were tons of indie bands performing throughout Bushwick, Williamsburg and Greenpoint which made traveling to each venue pretty easy. The headlining concerts at McCarren Park was surprisingly spacious, with different variety of food trucks, vendors promoting new or unknown Apps, while giving away free swag to entice new member with a month's or a few months of free membership; as well as cityMD providing concert goers with first aid needs and announcing a contest for a pair of panorama tickets (I did not win lol). My PIC and I had a wonderful time attending all the different venues, and listening to all the great artists who for the first time, I got a chance to hear up-close and personal. Look forward to next years festival!

This year: The Dirty Projectors and Miguel, so I couldn't be more excited. The festival is four days long with a block party on the weekend. In addition to the acts, the badge gets you access to parties with other badgeholders: both lovers of music and tech. It makes for an interesting crowd, some people only have tech badges while other have music and some have both. It offers a great exchange of ideas and better yet libations. There is also a cute little block party running down Bedford Ave with performances and vendors cheerfully welcoming summer. As for the headlining concert, that takes place is McCarren Park in a parking lot by the tennis courts. It's a great location. Large enough to be comfortable, but small enough to have great acoustics and to be able to see the performer from any place there.

Some pros are; the event is for charity, environmentally caring, there is a good vibe there, great view by the water, not too crowded, and you sometimes see discounted tickets. Some cons are; some samples are small, some places run out of food, limited samples (you buy ticket books) long lines, overall value. Will I go back next year? I found out about the event through Yelp (yay!) and bought tickets for 8 tastings and 4 beverages. The space was chock full of restaurants selling their best, sponsors hawking their products, and hungry hungry Brooklynites. I arrived around 2 pm and stayed just until it started raining. Lucky for me, I was able to use all my coupons in time! Staff were fantastic overall, with big smiles and enthusiastic attitudes. Now, to the eats: Brooklyn Cupcake - fantastic generous ladies who are passing out the mini chocolate, french toast, red velvet, and vanilla cupcakes like they're going out of style. Brooklyn Floss - root beer cotton candy, a lovely lady spinning the sweets, and lots of happy people in the "smile spot" as they are mystified by their growing cloud of sugar. The Brooklyn Star - winner of the longest line, The Brooklyn Star passed out cheddar cheese waffles with fried chicken, cabbage slaw, and mashed potatoes. Tasty, creative, and pretty. Dirck the Norseman passed out beef brisket and pulled pork with soft buns. Oh so meaty, rich goodness, with a good portion size. Pies and Thighs offered their fried chicken on a biscuit with hot sauce and sweet creamy mayo, which while tiny, is still rich enough to clog your arteries. Maison Premiere was giving out cocktails and oysters on the half shell for a ticket - a nice clean and crisp alternative to the nearby bar fare. Phin & Phebes had six ice cream flavors to sample - or you could get three for a ticket! The ginger cookie and Vietnamese coffee were incredible. Rosamunde Sausage Grill had the second longest line. The Andouille was really solid and they had really fun condiments like wasabi and spicy mayos and cheese sauces Teddy's Bar and Grille had AMAZING beignets. Two Door Tavern had salsa rubbed fried chicken wings - creative, well executed, and delish. Yelp offered a fun gift basket and the usual fun knick knacks- I hope I win! There are probably more that I can't remember. BUT it was such a fun day with very cool people. I reserve a star however - my ticket came with four drink tickets. I can't drink alcohol. So I got lots and lots of free sodas, but definitely not enough to justify the cost of the tickets. I am mollified in that my purchase has made the dream of building the town hall closer, buuuuut may buy one off tickets next year for the food and not drinks.
