There were so many small groups of musicians each performing in little circles creating dancing, fun, and happiness amongst the thousands of people filling up 6th avenue. The local food and real culture could really be found on 46th st east of 6th ave. West of 6th was pretty lame. A few Brazilian restaurants and mexican bars too helped liven the experience. I really felt like I was at a carnival type of experience at this festival. It was awesome.

I arrived around 12:30 and left around 230. There were a ton of food stands with things like fried ice cream, chicken/beef/vegetable doughy things, mozzarella-stuffed pancakes, Brazilian crepes, smoothies, gyros, and more. There are also lots of stands with fake jewelry and cheap clothes. It was interesting to walk around and take in the culture and people's collective passion for their country. There was a concert going on with some singers that I presume are well-known among Brazilians. The music was fun to listen to! There was a long line to wait on if you wanted to enter the dance section of the concert but you could hear it all over the festival. Up 6th Ave, there were stands of companies whom I presume were the sponsors. There was a man walking around with a snake offering people to take photos with it for $10... there was a statue of Pele- awesome. The people were mostly Brazilian but there were definitely other kinds of people there so I didn't feel out of place at all. Overall, I really enjoyed exploring the culture and being a part of this. Think I'll stop by in the coming years!

Held annually, Westchester Wine and Food Festival spans five glorious days of eating, drinking and meeting very nice people and business owners. I attended the Grand Tasting this weekend after a two friends both kept pestering me to go. They kept saying how great it was and I should buy a ticket too. I gave into peer pressure and bought a ticket (was able to snag the early bird discount) using a link my friend sent to me. Was glad they told me way in advance so I could benefit from the early bird discounted price too. Upon entering the event, I was pleasantly surprised. Many tents with a wide variety of food ranging from vegetarian burgers to fresh ceviches to decadent desserts and pastries. Plus the Bona Bona ice cream truck gave out huge portions of their delicious gourmet ice cream (I had the banana walnut this time. Tried the chefs mint last time. Yum!). But the real star of this event was the wine. The wine selection spanned across multiple tents, lots of variety and quality. Harrison Wine Vault was the exclusive sponsor of the wines for this year's festival (in previous years it was Zachys of Scarsdale). One of the great things about the WWFF is they publish a complete online list of vendors and specific wines for the event (see http://winefood.westchestermagazine.com/tickets/). Nice to have an opportunity to check out the selection ahead of the festival, instead of finding out after you buy the ticket. There was a VIP tent too, but honestly, it wasn't necessary in order to enjoy this event (unless you are wine obsessed - the VIP wines are in there but you need to purchase the more expensive Connoisseurs Tent ticket. Not needed unless you wish to IMO). The general admission ticket main area had so much, I wasn't able to try everything. Plus they gave away free stuff, including sparkling beverages from Italy. Looks like my friends were right. This is a good one!

If you really want to know the whole story, it's all laid out on their website but reading a bunch…read moreof bullet points on a screen about some big neighborhood spectacle is about the most depressing thing you can do, so I'll explain. ​Basically, the Giglio Feast is a historic 12-day Italian-American festival that happens every July at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It's been going on since 1887 when immigrants brought it over from Nola, Italy, to honor Saint Paulinus commemorating when he returned from captivity after sacrificing himself for his people and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. That part actually sounds pretty decent, if you want to know the truth, but the way spectators in attendance make a huge circus out of it just drives me crazy. Then participants are amazing. ​The main event is this thing called the "Dancing of the Giglio," where they take a giant 70-foot tower made of wood and steel weighing four whole tons and covered in lilies, angels, and religious figures and hoist it up. They've got a live brass band and a singer literally sitting right on top of the timber frame while roughly 120 guys lift, spin, and "dance" this enormous four-ton thing down North 8th Street on their bare shoulders. ​Guys in matching outfits blowing saxophones and yelling on the platform, and crowds of people crammed together in the street taking photos and cheering. There's even a statue of a saint perched at the very top against the blue sky, looking down at all these phonies sweating and carrying on in the heat. It's supposed to be this grand, sacred tradition, but looking at a hundred guys breaking their backs to carry a four-ton tower with a band riding on it just makes you feel sort of tired and thirsty. It really does.

Jen had a watermelon juice and I drank a Horchata which was the first time I had it. Both refreshing and delicious. $7. The majority of the food stalls were Mexican and Caribbean. We both had the peril empanadas which was stuffed with meat so for $5 it was a steal. Jen took a kielbasa and I had a single cheese burger from 5 Napkin Burger. The meat patty was tasty but the bun was cold. Lots of restaurants had set up open air seating or table grab and go. We walked all the way from 42nd to 57th Street. From what I remember this festival used to be chock a block with lots of food stalls. Nonetheless, we enjoyed ourselves. Port a Johns were at every block which made it convenient for those who drank a lot. Music at some food stalls was lively and who can resist shaking one's hips to the stellar music from Michael Jackson?

They show smaller, Indie films in this room usually. About as close to a private screening as you can get. There's also a much bigger, more conventional theater which shows blockbuster movies that most go to see. Pretty great spot and they have steep discounts (50% Off) on Mondays & Tuesdays which is a plus!

I love going to the movies - it's something I greatly missed during the height of the COVID…read morelockdowns, and I usually seek out independent art houses to discover under the radar films to see. While my go-tos in Westchester are Alamo Drafthouse and Jacob Burns Film Center, the Pelham Picture House is a place that is deep in the archives of my mind, having been there a few times when I was younger. I was off the other day and figured I would catch a movie, and since they were playing one I was meaning to see, I made my way over. Pelham Picture House is located in the main commercial hub of the town, among a number of other businesses. I remember coming here a couple of times when I was younger - I believe I saw Casper here during its initial theatrical run. I really love the exterior - it has a retro feel and the neon signage was the cherry on top. The box office is located right before you enter and they have a concession stand immediately to your left after you entering. There are technically two screens in this theater, though I feel they may have added the second one later on. The main theater is large, almost auditorium like with many seats. The second theater is off to the side - it kind of looks like a room that was used for something else at first - the screen is one of those roll-down projector types, and the seats look like ones you wound find in a home theater. I was in the latter theater (called the Screening Room) - it was comfortable but not what I was expecting. The theater as a whole provided a comfortable experience, but it can definitely use some love - a lot of the fixtures and aesthetics are old and worn. I could see where some renovations were done but a lot of it can use some sprucing up. Hopefully as time goes on we will see more improvements to the space, I feel it's really important to have local theaters that show independent and art house films. Customers service was great, and overall I had a good experience rediscovering Pelham Picture House. I would have no qualms returning, and would in fact seek it out if they're showing a film I want to see. It's really great to see theaters like this still standing in Westchester.
