The Get Down is the newest spot to learn all those dance moves that you've always wanted to and to get funky with your friends! As the newest addition to Japantown, the dance studio is quickly gaining momentum, opening their doors for students to learn from an amazing community of knowledgeable and welcoming instructors and peers. Beginner, intermediate or advanced, young or old, there are opportunities for everyone. The studio owners Brian, Jeanette, and Ceech are experts in their respective elements and their passion for dance is clear in their many years dedicated to the art. From speaking with them, watching them dance and/or taking their class, I find that their excitement is both apparent and infectious! I had the opportunity of checking out the studio during their soft opening period. It is bright, clean, and well ventilated in the 4-way intersection across from Roy's Station. With a varied coalition of instructors in so many different styles, you're bound to find something here for you. Ever wanted to wow your friends and family at weddings or a date on the dance floor? Classes in salsa, bachata, hip hop, funk (popping and locking), waacking, house, and breaking will add to your repertoire, and the studio will provide you great instruction and a space to practice. I have a little bit of experience in funk dance but have always wanted to learn some waacking. There are also DJing, top rocking, Kpop, sports karate classes! A quick visit to the website and you will find information on all of the instructors, their backgrounds and styles, as well as a calendar for all upcoming classes. The classes are very day/time specific and subject to change and may require you to sign up ahead of time, so I would recommend consulting the site before coming by. What are you waiting for? Get ready to Get Down!

I've been attending classes on a regular basis since March/April, and it's been a TOTAL blast! The location is great, the instructors are extremely talented, and the classes are very welcoming to all skill levels. So, not only are the classes perfect for improving your dance skills, but it's also a great social outlet for meeting new friends! I started taking one class a week, and now I regularly take 3-4 classes! The majority of the classes are offered in the evening, which is perfect for folks that are working or in school. Overall, I've learned a bunch of new styles of dance, and I'm improving my fitness. Classes always end with smiles and high-fives, which is pretty cool. They also have a 'membership' program which gives you access to unlimited classes per month. It's a great deal, and it doesn't require a contract (it's just month to month). Check it out!

Very fun hip hop class. A bit crowded with so many students but the vibe was great. Definitely would recommend.

How is the parking in the area?

Parking isn’t too bad, but we only have street parking. Meters are free after 6pm.

What ages do you offer dance classes for?

We offer youth classes in the afternoon/early evening with our youngest age group being 5 years old. We also offer adult classes in the evening.

Hi. Do you offer complimentary classes to see if your dance studio is a place we want to be a part of?…

Hi Lyndsay, we offer a trial drop-in, which is $16/class. That way, you can see if the instruction and studio is a fit before committing to a semester or a full year program.

I WISH I COULD GIVE 100 STARS to WVDC & Miss Basma…read more Miss Basma is truly one of a kind! My daughter has been dancing with her for the past two years, and I can't express enough how much of a positive impact she's had. After an awful experience with a previous coach, my daughter had completely lost her love for dance. I promised her that if we tried one more time at a new studio, things would be different -- and WVDC, along with Miss B, have far exceeded that promise. Miss Basma's patience, enthusiasm, and genuine care have completely reignited my daughter's passion. She's thriving again -- excited for every class, dedicated, and full of joy. Miss B always takes the time to connect with her students and parents, and she's consistently cheerful and encouraging. I honestly don't think I've ever seen her without a big, genuine smile! She will never fully know the impact she's had on my daughter -- and I'm certain she's made the same difference for so many other little dancers. We are so grateful for her kindness, energy, and belief in her students. Miss B is an absolute gem -- thank you for bringing back the love of dance we thought was lost forever!

I cannot recommend this dance studio for parents looking to lift up young girls…read more My daughter was interested in Kpop dancing, and is in an awkward bubble age of being too old (~10) for the "mini" class and at the cusp of too young for the"Junior" pre-teen class. She definitely isn't a great dancer, but she practices and tries her hardest. This is just a fun class for girls, not elite or comp. Things started off well but then she started leaving with tears in her eyes. She says that the teacher was leaving her out of the routine and so she was sitting around most of the time, not understanding why. No explanation. I urgently asked for a callback to understand the situation. No callback. I asked the teacher, Mr Garret, next week in person. He says she wasn't getting it but he would include her more. I asked him to speak to her about her so she could feel supported and understand and how she can improve. He says he didn't have time to talk to her and said he would next week. He never did. Not excusable. My daughter continued to come back with tears in her eyes. She says that 2 other girls were giggling and laughing when she made a mistake. She didn't want to make a fuss or quit before the performance. The performance came, and she fell behind in the rehearsal. She told me a few days later that everyone laughed at her. She just did box breathing to focus and did great in the performance. It was a proud moment for our family. *I then receive an email saying that she needs to go to the class where she is overaged OR just take the SAME class but on a different day to free up space for a better dance*. Reason: she wasn't dancing well enough; wasn't fitting in socially; the class was "full" and she's kicked out. Wait, she's still being invited to the same skill but on a different day despite being a bad dancer? I was shocked and disappointed. Instead of optimizing for the culture of the class, they instead optimize against the student for not fitting in. She's not a great dancer, but she's young, tried hard, and was trying to fit in even with tears in her eyes every day. We have dropped Purdance with no hesitation and she now uses her experience as her way of being able to hold her breath to perform amidst an unsupportive environment.

After reviewing a number of places offering dance lessons, we decided to go with Studio M for one…read morereason: Giovanni!! Before we booked, we had a free consultation with him and he made sure to ask all the right questions to get a good feel of what we wanted to do for our wedding dance: what kind of music we liked, what our experience is, what kind of dress I was wearing, etc. He even offered to remix some songs together if we didn't have a single song in mind. He wanted to make sure that we were comfortable with whatever dance happened. He's also Italian and we're having our wedding in Italy, so it felt like fate to meet him! We ended up booking 10 lessons with Giovanni. After we decided on a song, within the first lesson, we already had a good 30 seconds choreographed. He was patient with us both, as neither of us had dance experience, and he really listened to us on what we were comfortable doing. He also shortened our song choice so that our first dance was within a reasonable timeframe. Within 4 lessons, our entire dance was choreographed! We spent the rest of the lessons perfecting, tweaking, and refining every possible moment! It really put us at ease for when we finally hit the dance floor. Another really awesome thing about Giovanni is that since he does a lot of weddings, he is always thinking about a number of things to make sure that the dance is beautiful, but also that the photos captured are perfect! He took a lot of videos for us so we can watch and practice at home. He also made sure to tell us when we'd have good "photo moments" where we should perfect our poses for the quick moment our photographer will have to snap a pic. And he even recommended sending a video to our photographer with recommendations on photo moments, so the photographer can get familiar with the dance ahead of time. In general, Giovanni is so kind, patient, and incredibly fun to be around and we cannot recommend him enough as a wedding dance instructor!!
