While visiting Dublin, we made it point to check out and support the gay scene, so The George was high on our list and it did not disappoint! While most of the reviews speak of the evening crowds and vibes, we popped into The George on a weekday afternoon for a pint. The larger "club" space was not open, so we grabbed a table in the bar portion, which is separated by a door. Same place, but different vibes for sure! The bar area was small and quaint, and gave off classic Irish pub vibes more than gay bar, and we liked that energy, especially for a Tuesday afternoon! We grabbed a couple of pints followed by cocktails, and spent close to an hour hanging out and chatting with each other and a few local patrons. The bar itself stayed full, but the surrounding tables were a bit transient with small and larger groups coming through for a drink. The bartender was okay. Hard pressed to refer to him as "mean" or "rude", but he also wasn't super friendly. Cocktail was good and the pint was tasty. Overall, really enjoyed The George and have a deep appreciation for their presence in Dublin! Looking forward to going back and checking out the nightlife this place has to offer! read more

I recently visited The George, the older bar and my interaction with a barman identified as Lee raised serious concerns. I generally do not submit complaints--having worked in hospitality for many years, I understand the challenges of customer service. However, on this occasion, the conduct I witnessed was sufficiently troubling to warrant a formal statement. The barman in question appeared to go out of his way to behave in a rude and openly hostile manner, not only toward myself but toward several other patrons. During the short time I was present, I personally experienced three separate instances of verbal insult. My intention had been simply to enjoy a quiet evening with friends, yet the behaviour displayed made this impossible. One of my companions, who works in the legal profession, noted that the conduct observed could raise issues related to harassment and other potential liabilities. Initially, I assumed his manner might have been intended as humour; however, after observing his interactions with other customers, it became clear that this behaviour was consistent and not directed solely at me. Several newly arrived patrons left shortly after arriving, seemingly as a result of their interactions with this staff member. In total, five customers departed after finishing only their first drink, and I likewise felt compelled to leave. I have never witnessed conduct of this nature in an establishment that purports to offer an inclusive and welcoming environment. The behaviour observed was, in my view, unprofessional and inappropriate for any hospitality setting. I would urge management to take this feedback seriously, as it may only be a matter of time before this staff member's conduct results in a more serious incident or formal complaint. Of all the gay clubs I've been to, this one is nice! To be fair, by the time we got there I was pretty gone, but it felt safe. The stage on dance floor was super fun, and they still had plenty of bar area space separated from it. This was our favorite bar in Dublin. We went multiple nights. Drag Bingo was a blast, as were the drag performances. We also went another night and saw Doveena/Divina/Devina not sure of spelling but she was Fun! The bartenders were nice. The patrons were mostly kind friendly and chatty! Meh.... Oh, The George, the George. What an interesting experience this was! So, first things first, that €9 cover charge. We were not amused. Your choices of music sucked. Jarring is definitely an understatement! It's like they hired a DJ straight out of a bad wedding reception, playing all the cheesiest tunes no one wants to dance to. I guess they missed the memo that good music can be a make-it-or-break-it factor for any clubbing experience. And speaking of dancing, can we talk about the make-out sessions? Wait, isn't this supposed to be a gay bar? There's too many straight people! I mean, sure, inclusivity is important, but shouldn't the straight folks save their PDA for Tinder or something? There's also no older gays. They are either not allowed here or they scared them off. Let the LGBTQ+ community have their spotlight, for crying out loud! And let's not forget the pièce de résistance, the bathrooms! Ah, nothing makes you question your life choices more than stepping into a seedy and grimy bathroom. I mean, who needs shiny, sparkling tiles when you can have the authentic grunge experience, right? Just... don't touch anything, and bring hand sanitizer. Lots of it. This place was sooooo much fun! I am from California, USA and traveled to Dublin with a group. I decided to go out for the night and met some locals who were sooooo much! They took me here and wow I was impressed. I am not gay but back home In our community some of the places aren't too safe to go alone to. Came here while en route to show a friend temple bar. A very nice location! The drinks here were many and amazing. Very good beers and whiskey in stock. Good for any time of the day! The service was very nice! The bartender was friendly and helpful, loved to make conversation. Had an hard time understanding my accent but was very nice! I was in the geogre with some friends watching the drag show an we were approached by a member of staff which later we found out he was a manager called Fran ,which was very rude and aggressive, we had drinks on the bar/stool section and start shouting at us saying we can't have our drinks there , there was no signs to indicate that we can't have drinks there so how are we suppose to know this, and he gone about his business we were left feeling very nervous and decided to leave we spoke to the bouncer outside that said they were sorry we are leaving for this reason and it be best to come in another day to speak to his manager regards this has there have been complaints before, I don't live close to the geogre to call back in so I hoping by review can maybe help others that may have similar experiences that they can share read more

Jamie W. was quite determined for us to come here during our brief Irish vacation, as this is apparently the mother of all gay bars on the Emerald Isle. Now it's not that we're feather boa-adorned, mascara-stained queens with heavy attitude. OK, maybe we have the attitude part down, but otherwise we're as nondescript as any couple you would see strolling in the Castro in San Francisco searching for the perfect latte. But now that we live in a Trump Nation stateside, it's probably safer to hang out at The George than it is at Midnight Sun back home. Although the legendary Temple Bar is just a quick stroll away, The George is located on party-hearty South Great George's Street which is Dublin's version of the Castro. We came on a Sunday hoping to play bingo with the redoubtable Shirley Temple Bar calling out the numbers on the balls. To our chagrin, however, we were too early as the games don't begin until 9PM. Alas, we just hung out in the low-profile bar nursing our pints of Guinness which was perfectly fine by us (photo: http://bit.ly/2laXXrX). It turned out the section we were in is called Jurassic Park, as this is where the "older" crowd congregates, thank you very much. It's gay history in Dublin as the oldest gay bar still hanging around. I'm a fan of the little bar in there side for afternoon meetings and drinks. The loo is in the basement for the smaller bar, but if you're handicapped I'm sure they'd let you go to the closed larger area. I've been coming to Dublin annually for 15 years and have always had great service with no attitude and very chatty friendly. I continue to be a fan! read more

I still think that the bar staff in this club are very friendly and pleasant, the door men on the other hand. Nightclubs in Dublin close at 2:30am on a Saturday. We turned up at 2:15am. Yeah late but technically we should still be legally allowed in to have a drink etc. The door man obviously is angry with the world that no one has discovered him yet for the role of Total Recall 3. So yes I can hear the critics already saying, "Ah come on Annie, that's a bit trivial!" Usually I would agree with you if that policy was enforced to everyone that came to the door but it wasn't. He let his mates in. As we left I said to my friend, let's just wait here for fifteen minutes so that I can count all the people he lets in, it was a joke and he let people in after 2:30am too. Easily Dublin's best known gay bar, the George is loved by many and feared by many others. If you put all grievances and sexuality issues aside for a few hours you'll probably have a great night. Some of the stuff that's on here is crazy camp, but good fun if you're in the right frame of mind. Nursing my hangover as I type this review. Going to gay bingo on a Sunday night was an experience, a good one (as far as I could recall). It didn't help that pints were €3.50 which went down easily while bopping to drag show acts to catch pop tunes. The crowd was very friendly and up for a good time - a good 1/3 were women with their gay associates in tow. The party was just getting started as I left at 11.30 pm to catch the last bus home. This Dublin gay scene institution has been going strong for longer than I can remember. Camp as knickers, gay as Christmas. Some call it the gay Copper Face Jacks. Some say Copper Face Jacks is the George for "breeders". For the most part I have an incredible amount of fun any time I come here. Awesome tunes, lots of dancing. It is a cattle market if you let your beef enter the market. It is what you make of it! If all you want to do is score, then you will score. If all you want to do is dance, then you will dance. If all you want to do is have fun with your friends, then you will have fun with your friends! (The last one is usually what I aim for) Just like Annie L said in her recent review, the bar staff and staff in general are incredibly friendly. The drag shows are great craic (Wednesday's Space N Veda in particular)... The problem I have is with the security on the main door. These guys have attitudes and egos bigger than any drag queen with maximum friend capacity on their Facebook profile. This has gotten significantly worse over the past year. I have been coming here since I was a teenager and the bouncers attitude has changed from, "NO not tonight" to "please come in", over the years and a few years ago I thought all that nonsense of not letting people in for NO valid reason was of days gone by. Sadly this attitude has come back FULL FORCE and has pretty much ruined mine, and my friends nights out on numerous occasions over the past year. My birthday, celebrating my drag debut, other friends birthdays...... All of these celebrations have been ruined in some way because of bouncers on the door of the George. I am not 18 years of age. I am 32 and most of my friends are around the same age. We don't get gee-eyed and fall to the next club looking for alcopops and shots of tequila. Each of these nights I have been grilled on the door for no reason and actually feel like I need to camp it up to make it easier for me to get in. Any straight people with me have huge problems, in particular the guys. This is BULLSH1T in this day and age. I understand for safety reasons in the early 90's why they would not let big straight guys in but in 2012 I think my straight mates should be able to come and celebrate my birthday with me wherever I choose to celebrate it. The straight guys are not the only casualty of this, sooo many of my gay mates have been refused from the door for no reason at all. Just because the bouncers on the door don't like the look of them. Now, there are some of the security staff who are LOVELY and I have no problem with these guys, it is unfortunate that the couple of ego's that are there ruin the reputation for the rest of them and appear to get some kick out of ruining peoples nights out. Went there with my friend on Tuesday night. The show was great. Dolly grip was the act! Fab!!! But a bar man with a beard threw out my drink it was half full, I called him over and explained that he threw out my drink and rudely said all drinks left here will be thrown out, yet my friend pint wasnt and they were side by side. I told him I'd like my drink replaced, even just the half he threw out. He was unbelievably rude!! To go or not to go that is the question one battles with when it comes to a night out in the George. Known locally as the G, The George is a lottery when it comes to a gay night out in Dublin. Sunday night out is quintessentially the only option before 11p.m with Shirley Temple Bar performing her classic bingo night with great performances and cutely boys thrown in to the mix. All other nights are definitely a hit, miss or maybe(depending on who is checking you out). The shows that are performed there are generally drag queens miming to a backing track (which I was told by a friend from London as been un-original, tacky and non innovative) although sometimes new shows do surprise the frequent party goer. The George has quieten down in the past few months however they have tried to re-establish the place by offering drink promotions and reduced entry price. They also offer free pass outs which gives you a fantastic opportunity to tour the alternative gay night and return if nothing else is pulling. As it is known as Dublin's oldest gay bar it is worth checking out and doing so it is worth keeping an open mind as who knows what to expect. read more

The George have got some new weekly treats! From Monday-Thursday's all pints, longnecks and spirits are only €4 each. As well as the new first-rate recessionista prices exciting new musical outfits are gracing the DJ booths. Wednesdays see exquisite mayhem with Veda & Davina followed by DJ Rocky with free admission before 11pm. Whilst on Thursday's it's all back to Davina's for killer tunes in the form of 'Davina's House Party', with drink promos and hardcore glamour. It's Friday's however that really enliven the senses with 'Anto's X Factor' where punters get to sing for survival and win cash. This is followed by a pounding set from DJ Karen on the decks. Although come to think about it Sunday's are fun too with 'Bingo with Shirley Temple Bar'. It's bingo, it's Shirley, what more could one's kitsch self ask for! read more
