I've used them several times for my F-150 and so far have been VERY pleased with the work. I feel the pricing is fair, the workmanship is good, and the turn-around time is very reasonable. I was a little frustrated the first time I went in - I didn't understand the system. They did a diagnostic check, which took about 90 minutes. They identified several problems with my truck. I assumed that they would have repaired what I took it in for. I had to schedule another appointment for the actual repair. This was a misunderstanding on my part, so I don't fault them - I was just expecting the repair to be done on my initial visit. My only complaint is they are busy (a good problem for them!) and they usually schedule about a week out. read more

I want to support local businesses, however, when I called I was told there'd be a $165 diagnostic fee. I've been told this before but they deduct that fee if the do the repairs. Nit so at this shop. They charge you that fee no matter if they fix it or not. I decided to pass. read more

We took our daughters Jeep wrangler in for diagnosing an electrical start issue and reoccurring emission warning light. Patrick and Adam were very quick to find and eliminate the problem with the ignition switch. The emissions problem was easily resolved with a Mopar brand gas cap. We have been to two Jeep dealerships who just want to replace parts until the problem goes away. Gear Guy and team did a great job for us in a timely manner and at a very reasonable price. If I could give a zero star I would, took my car in for oil change, returned car 1.5 quarts low, Strike 1. Overlooked it chalked it up to easy miss. Took my car in for a routine radiator flush and fill. The shop left the top radiator hose loose hose pop off on the way to Bulverde. Walked 2 Miles , new fluid and a tightened down hose. Now I have to chase what electronics got hosed, have multiple warning lights on. I would not recommend this shop for work. Take at your own risk. Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me, won't be a third time. read more

Read the reviews and gave them the opportunity to replace a bad oil pressure sending unit on my old Monte Carlo. While the shop's office isn't impressive, the customer service, work and cost is excellent! While they have a fee for diagnosing the problem, they charge for the time it takes them, not the standard hourly charge. They used a Delco part with a reasonable labor charge. They test drove the car to ensure it was working properly. You may have to make a follow-up appointment after the diagnosis due to the volume of work they have but the customer attention is simply excellent. I'll be taking my vehicles to The Gear Guy in the future. read more

After looking at my car they quoted me the cost over the phone and I told them to go ahead and do the work. When I went to pick up the car there was an additional $110 dollar charge for the diagnosis. This charge was not included in the phone quote and is always waived by any other shop I have used as long as the work is performed, which it was. I feel lied to about the agreed price. read more

A big yes for this place. The owner, Patrick McCoy is a solid structure here who makes sure prices are fair and the work is solid. You know when 90% of the clientele coming into the shop are older men that you're probably in a trustworthy establishment. Especially when many of them are repeat customers. The labor costs are fair at $110 per hour and the work they do is quality. They are upfront and fair and their pricing is completely reasonable. I thought I had a major transmission problem because it was leaking. I took it to the Gear Guy because of the great reviews. Because of shortage of 'techs' it took them a few days to tell me what it needed. Luckily the transmission was ok, just need to replace a couple of drain plugs. But, they also found my water pump was leaking. That was a major job. But, I've had my 2016 Explorer for 2 weeks and no more leaking. They warranty their work for year! One star because yelp hasn't added zero or negative stars yet... I was referred to The Gear Guy by a reputable company in San Antonio and assumed these guys were the same and legit... I called them to request a quote for installation of a leaf-spring pack between the axle and leaf springs on the front end of an '05 Ford Excursion. I told them I was coming from out of town, what was included in the kit, what the install process was, and they quoted me $150 plus tax. I set an appointment for the next Monday and showed up on time. I sat in the waiting room (alone with no other customers) for about an hour while I waited for them to get the vehicle in. The vehicle was in the back for 15-20 minutes when a fellow who I assume was the owner (perhaps manager) comes out to tell me they've "run into a snag". He informs me that they didn't quote it correctly. He claimed he didn't realize what the job was despite my very specific description of the vehicle, the kit, and the install process, and that they were now going to charge me $350. I let him know that I could have it done closer to home for $250 (truth) but he acted indifferent so it was a no-go. According to the manufacturer the install is a ~2 hour job. I asked Gear Guy staff what their hourly shop labor rate was and was told it was a reasonable $75/hour. You do the math... After having been in business for almost 12 years I'd have thought that the Gear Guy leadership would have learned that if you screw up (he admitted twice that he screwed up), you don't try make the customer pay extra for it (let alone more than double)...especially if the customer travelled from out of town to bring you the business. The right thing to do would have been to simply cover the mistake (seeing's how I'd been very specific about the job description, travelled to bring them the biz, and already wasted an hour of my time). That would have been very fair and reasonable...it's not like their mistake would have cost them hundreds or thousands of dollars. If he'd have admitted the mistake and asked me to meet him halfway (say, maybe another hour in labor) I'd wouldn't have been pleased, but I'd have been understanding and gone for it, and likely been a satisfied customer. But more than double??? Maybe next time. Oh, wait... That was just my experience, but if you choose to patronize this business don't be surprised if they try to change the quote on you after they've got your vehicle in the back and you've invested your time. They've done it at least once before.... read more

These guys are great. Could not be happier with our experience. We were visiting the area when our Jeep started to have serious problems. After consulting with my brother who owns an auto repair business in Colorado, I checked reviews on local repair shops and took it to The Gear Guy. They assessed the situation and told me exactly what my brother had already told me which instantly gave me confidence in their diagnosis. Unfortunately we needed a new engine. They quoted me a price and I asked them if they could please try and finish the job as quickly as possible since we were supposed to be leaving town again in about a week. They got the new engine in and started the repairs. One of their techs, Danny, even came in on Saturday while the shop was closed to finish the job so we could stay on schedule. It is a pleasure to do business with a company that really understands what customer service is. We are very happy with the repairs and the Jeep drives like new. I had always heard The Gear Guy was a reliable place. Someone you could trust. Sadly to say it's not the truth. I recently took my truck to their shop. There was a leak in the power steering pan and connecting gearbox. Which I knew before hand was the problem. I was told that for an original fee a diagnostic would be run on the truck to make sure no other problem existed. That sounded great to me. Its what I wanted. Two days later I was called and told that the power steering situation existed and that the serpentine belt and AC belt were cracking. Other than that it was perfectly fine. This is their lead mechanic by the way Adam. I say great lets fix everything. Three days pass the trucks ready. I get a call in the morning that the trucks ready. I'm about forty five minutes out and I get a call from the owner Patrick. The transmission is acting up when he takes it out on its fourth test drive. Why so many test drives? I think to myself their is a shift kit on my transmission maybe he just doesn't know how to use it. No big deal it should be fine. I get there. To pay for the repairs. The transmission is blown. I cant even drive the thing safety off the lot. This was right after I had just paid almost a grand for the repairs. The owner Patrick who was driving it at the time. Tells me this. We never took the car out on an original test drive.so its not our fault we didn't know. Even though the lead mechanic Adam has already told me it was taken out twice and everything on it was perfect. I caught him in a lie. He then proceeds to tell me it was just a coincidence and he's not going to fix it in fact its going to cost me 2,000 dollars to fix it. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT GO TO THE GEAR GUY.
