My husband booked a room for my birthday this past weekend with a package that included our dinner and breakfast. First impressions of the Inn were decent, but nothing too impressive. Our room was not ready when we arrived so we walked around the property and found some nice muskoka chairs by the water. The location of the Inn is probably the best thing about it - if you want to be right by the water this is pretty much your only option. That being said, once we got our room keys it went downhill from there.
Anyone booking a room at the main Inn should be aware that there is NO elevator so pack lightly if you have a suite on the 3rd floor as we did! I'd say the average age of patrons at the Inn was about 60 so I'm guessing they may want to know things like that in advance.
Once we got to our room there was a laminated note warning of a local bug infestation and asking guests not to open their windows for fear the flying "no-see-ums" would invade (not a comforting thought!). The room itself was underwhelming, with an old A/C unit in the window that did not adequetely cool the room and we woke up with very stuffy noses the next morning. The bathroom was standard but again, a sign posted warned that "water temperatures fluctuate". My husband took a shower before dinner and had to turn the hot water almost completely off as it was scalding hot every few seconds, and then it would become freezing cold.
The bed linens were probably the roughest I'd ever slept on (pillow cases scratch your face their so hard) and the we kept smelling some kind of electrical burn smell which could have been either the electric fireplace, or as my husband discovered, perhaps the hair dryer which he tried to use to dry his hair and about thirty seconds into use it no longer worked!
We headed to the dining room for our dinner reservation and within about ten minutes we heard several other patrons complaining about the slow service and saw quite a few of them actually get up and walk out - we soon found out why. Our appetizers, which were only garlic bread, took 30 minutes to arrive and our main course arrived a few minutes later, leaving us not much room to eat them. My steak was like chewing leather, although my husband enjoyed the prawns/scallops dish he ordered. Dessert was enjoyable (fried ice cream), but it definitely looked like they were understaffed. Unfortunately, the next morning we saw more of the same at breakfast - several angry patrons taking their frustrations out on the waitresses as they had forgotten to serve some of them and others complaining of the long wait for a simple breakfast dish.
All in all, it was a very mediocre experience - the location itself can't be beat if you're going on the 1000 islands cruise it is a 60 second walk to the pier and I didn't see any other accommodations anywhere nearby. But if you are looking for high quality service, food, and room accommodations I would stear clear and I honestly have no idea how they got membership to "Ontario's Finest Inns". read more
