I go through phases, but this is probably my number one favourite restaurant on the entire planet…read moreright now. The street scene on Glasgow Vennel never fails to send me back in time - an old cobbled street, including the flax heckling shop ( an old stone cottage) which is a Burns heritage site. Inside, the ambience is good in the old school Italian style, and the atmosphere gets very hale and hearty as the evening progresses with all those Ayrshire families enjoying themselves! On my last two visits to family in Ayrshire, this is where we went, and it was been clean plates all round for us, from my niece (age 10) to my mother (aged 70+). Pizza for me, calzone for my sister, chicken for mother, and pizza & chips plus homemade ice cream and more elaborate desserts for the kids. All done to a T - see the photos from my sister's phone which I've uploaded. I wouldn't call it high glamour, but prices are reasonable (£9.25 for the most expensive pizza) and the value for money and wholesomeness of the food is unbeatable. In conclusion, it would take a lot to make me want to try a different restaurant in the Irvine/Kilwinning area.

This is a lovely restruant with a really good Italian menu at very reasonable prices…read more The staff are welcoming and attentive. The most exciting thing is you can have any pasta dish gluten free there are so few restaurants in Irvine that offer this and a dietary restriction can make eating out so difficult. Well done Adesso we will definitely be back.

Irvine's Harbour Arts Centre hosts both visual and performing arts, plus a lot of community and…read morechild-friendly workshops. The adjoining Hac Bar now seems to have established itself as an elegant bistro and bar. On a visit up north, I had already taken mother to Small Talk, and if you are a big soup fan like mother then Small Talk still wins as it is three soups of the day there, versus one everywhere else, including the Hac Bar! Nevertheless, I felt the need to ring the changes, and had my sister drop us off outside the Ship Inn (didn't fancy it!) and we ended up here. Where Hac Bar wins over Small Talk is in the extensive window views towards the harbour (!), a much larger and less crowded space dining space, a touch of modern elegance, plus Hac Bar serves craft beers and cocktails if that is your thing. This is daytime to evening venue. Vegetarians such as myself are well catered for with at least half a dozen interesting options clearly marked on the menu, and the manager also advised that the chicken curry could be made with quorn. I asked which of the vegetarian dishes were made fresh, and was told all of them apart from the lasagne. Mother went for the tomato and basil soup, which she finished. The bread that came with it looked to be bog standard supermarket brown (might have been toasted) and was left untouched. As my main was a bit dry, I ended up having them bring me the soup as well. I am not a huge fan of tomato soup as I find it too acidic and the soup here did nothing to change my mind and was in no way outstanding, only OK. (see photo) I went for the goats cheese burger, which was really more of a stack of two rounds of grilled cheese garnished with roasted peppers and onions in a brioche bun. It was served on a board with fries and coleslaw (see photo) The impressive appearance of my main alone made me glad I had come to Hac Bar! Not having had goat's cheese in a while, I enjoyed my meal. If we are being critical, I would have preferred less cheese and more roast veg or salad in the bun. The brioche was pleasantly tender, however if my dining companion had been someone I was trying to impress, it could have done with being a lot more structurally sound as eating became a bit messy! Coleslaw was OK, the fries came attractively served in a wire basket. However, fries are 'fake food' in my book - I only nibbled a few and next time I would try and swap these for something a bit more wholesome. I did find the meal just a bit dry which I mentioned to the staff and asked for some soup. I was brought a full bowl without bread, as I asked, and this was billed as 'Kid's Soup £2' rather than the full whack, which was a nice touch. The staff were all excellent. I really enjoyed the relaxed, elegant charm of the Hac Bar and would definitely eat here again. (Note: Wasn't impressed with the rather derivative gallery exhibtions - the jewelry and other crafts available to buy were more to my tastes. However, I have seem some poignant work here with a strong local connection to the local landscape, history, culture and sometimes with a dash of gritty realism and working class culture!)

The bar is open all day for meals and coffee and serves an A La Carte menu at night . The centre operates as a gallery , concert venue and offers art classes as well . The auditorium has around 150 seats , therefore offering a small intimate feel to it . As an audience you feel really close to the artist and often get a chance to talk at interval time as they can be found at the merchandise table , signing CD,s etc . I have seen 4 or 5 bands here over the last year and thus very enthusiastic about supporting local and overseas talent . Prices are reasonable about ten to twelve pounds for a ticket and the bar serves good food and drinks . There is a local arts festival in the summer which is well attended . Good place to pop in if you are in the area , for a restorative drink or a bite to eat.

Terrible service from here today so much so we will not be back. As regular customers we had an…read moreissue last week with a special fish supper being over cooked and the curry sauce being runny but we thought it was a one off, however today I am so disgusted we will not be back. My partner collected a small fish supper and a chicken nugget meal as the chicken nuggets are usually proper chicken with a lovely flavour. However we got home and noticed immediately that the chicken nuggets were different. I opened one of them to find that it was minced chicken something that turns my stomach and I simply cannot eat. I did however take a bite and it was tasteless and clearly a cheaper alternative to their usual chicken nuggets. Unknown to me my partner who was downstairs had also been disappointed with his fish supper as it was broken into tiny pieces and likewise the chips were not fresh and he put his in the bin. I phoned the fish and chip shop and the young girl who answered immediately told me that they had new chicken nuggets when I told her I was not satisfied she put me on to her manager. As soon as he took the phone his attitude was arrogant and condescending he asked me what my problem was as they were still chicken nuggets. I advised him that the reason we go there is because the usual ones that are served are proper chicken and not minced chicken and he advised that his supplier did not have any and he did not see the problem as they were still chicken nuggets. At no point did he apologise or offer a replacement or refund and he made it clear that he knew who my partner was as he was a regular customer. At this point I asked him why he did not advise him that there was a change in the supplier as my partner would have ordered something else yet again he repeated he didn't need to he was still serving chicken nuggets. I asked his name and he responded I'm "BIG CHIEF" I thought I was hearing things and asked him again and he replied "I AM BIG CHIEF" I asked his name and he replied Martin and that he was the owner, his attitude continued and it was evident that he was acting smart in front of younger staff members and his ego really needed to be addressed. I asked him if he had any intention to replace the order and he said next time you're in It will be replaced. I felt this was reluctant and he had absolutely no intention of refunding us. I fully intend to take guidance from consumer and trading standards Scotland and environmental health to find out the actual quality and quantity of chicken in these minced nuggets as it clearly was the cheapest option he could purchase. We will not be back he has lost regular customers but his egotistical behaviour would highlight this would not bother him in the slightest. I highly doubt we are the only people who have experienced the same treatment and with the attitude shown today it is clear that this man clearly needs to go on a course for customer service as his interpersonal skills are non-existent. I also believe that this fish and chip shop which is in a prime location of the town will fail miserably if this man is allowed to continue running the place with no regard to customers concerns complaints and quality of the food. I would be very much obliged if they can refund us for the order today they know our address as we order regularly for delivery but will never give them any future orders as that is twice now the food has been under par, however the main reason was the attitude displayed by this man. Simple apology would have rectified the situation but his egotistical demeanour escalated the situation. I hope other customers take this on board as a true and accurate account of our experience today.
