Beers were priced right and the Painkiller was by far the best mixed drink. Small thing is in the room dropped it from a perfect 5-star review. The Keurig was without pods and the lamp didn't work. This restaurant was recommended to me by someone familiar with St. Croix. The Fred seems to be a trendy hotel. We walked through a courtyard to the pool area. Beyond the pool is a bar and a deck looking out onto the beach. We sat on the deck. Both of us had the Seared Tuna Sandwich with a Cruzan Confusion. The sandwich was tasty and the drink was refreshing. We were able to walk off the deck and down to the beach. From our seat we could see a cruise ship that was docked in Frederiksted. read more

Avoid this hotel (Unfortunately, the town is not much better). My "pool view" room with a "balcony" was on the first floor with a view of the back of the office where I got to enjoy the staff's little dog barking for hours (till 10pm) and was woken up early in the morning with the loud radios, conversations and engine noise of delivery drivers on the street side of my room. Since the cruise ship was in port, the public areas had booming music in a failed attempt to attract cruise ship business - and a successful attempt to push me and other guests away. The staff was uncaring, but I write that off to them being more focused on the lack of phone service to the hotel as their phone rep was informing them that it might be weeks before the phone was reconnected. I travel extensively and, for the first time in my life, I got to experience a hotel that was bad enough that I canceled the remainder of my stay and booked a flight and hotel at another island. Yeah, it was worth $1,000 to get away from Fred... Highly disappointed. Don't make the same mistake I did. Avoid The Fred and St Croix. There are far better options for your vacation. read more

This is a review of the boutique hotel, The Fred, not the restaurant. Marjan and I visited over the july 4th holiday, and chose the Fred over several other properties. This hotel is located on Strand Street, a few blocks from the waterfront and pier. The hotel is an 1800s structure, masterfully reborn as a very modern day boutique. Our attraction: contemporary design with excellent pool area. There are other properties that highlighted beach access, more so than the Fred, but our plan was to rent a car, and visit other beach areas around the island. We booked directly with the hotel, and as we found, Delia the desk agent, was very much in contact with us from the outset, asking if we might need transportation from the airport, if we might need reservations for the spa...in short, her attention was welcome indeed. Arriving, we were shown to our suite, "The Christopher", an executive suite overlooking the pool and bar area. The room was exceptional, modern and contemporary in finish, bedroom and bathroom spacious. The scene of the property from our balcony presented an area that reminded of scenes of Miami. Very modern and upscale. There is an elevated observation deck above the bar area offering expansive views of the ocean. Right of the view is the famed pier area, popular with snorklers and scuba divers. To the left are views of Dorsch beach, and farther on the left the famed Sandy Point Beach, at times off limits to visitors as the beach is a protected nesting area for sea turtles. On our day of arrival, a cruise ship was anchored at the end of the pier. The pool and hot tub are super modern in design, with vanishing edge borders. There is even a wading pool atop the observation deck, again with vanishing edge borders. Quite impressive. Here is a bit of a downer. On arrival, we were offered a complimentary glass of champagne, and naturally, we hoofed it to the bar for our gift. We found the young bartender remarkably indifferent to our presence, and after grousing that champagne was not available, walked away, only returning to take a wine order after she occupied herself taking personal phone calls. Given the warm reception we had received by Delia, the desk agent, we were surprised. We noticed this particular bartender demonstrated the same attitude with other guests, some walk ins from the street, all who left given the poor welcoming from this bar attendant. Needless to say, we never returned for bar service. One word about beach access. The Fred indeed fronts the beach, but there is very limited beach, with a single row of 3 or 4 umbrellas and lounge chairs, the beach itself uninviting given the rocks that mark the entry to the ocean. We did not utilize the beach amenities during our visit, rather traveling to other beaches along the Frederiksted front. One very disappointing issue of the pool area. While the Fred is a very upscale, pricy hotel, guests that we met were a bit older, some apparently retired, some were residents day visiting the pool area. The music that blared over speakers seemed not a match with the guests. The music was best described as hip hop/rap fusion, more fitting the staff than the guests. While we totally enjoyed the beauty of the property and the very contemporary suite, we probably would not return. We missed not having quality access to the beach, we regretted the attitude of the bartender, and we definitely did not like the choice of music that played every single day of our stay, inescapable even through our closed door, given the turbo volume constantly in play. We had an ocean front view reserved table at sunset and had a lovely and delicious dinner, my wife still speaks of her lobster that she enjoyed. I called to inquire about Hobi sailboat rental. The front desk person told me they do not directly rent them but spent a significant amount of time and effort trying to accommodate my inquiry. My fiancé and I were on a cruise that stopped in St. Croix. We unknowingly started walking in the direction of Fred's and decided to stop in when we heard the DJ at the pool. I'm so glad we did! This place has a fun, lively atmosphere. The DJ was playing great music and we were able to swim in the pool. The Fred provided towels. There is also a cute beach area where they had a couple of paddle boards. For $20, you can rent them which is definitely reasonable. The drinks were strong and the oysters were some of the best I've ever had! The service was great and I have to shout out Jlisa and her puppy, Beams! Such a sweetheart We wish we could have spent more time here! We will definitely stop in again when we're back in St. Croix. read more

She ensured our rooms were kept tidy and even washed Mac and I clothes the last day. For a tiny fee. If you needed extra towels or anything in your room she made it happen. Vince - The restaurant manager. Allowed us to take over the music and essentially let us do whatever we wanted. If anyone isn't mentioned here that impacted your stay be sure to call them out by name. The entire staff was so happy to help us in any way possible. There were very few chairs by the tiny beach, we had to wait to use the snorkel gear because it was already being used (although we only saw 2 people using it) and it was not terribly clean. I was really excited to Eat with Fred, however my meal/ experience was mediocre. First off, they were out of half the menu by 11:30am. It was Super Bowl Sunday and they didn't have chicken wings. I ordered the Fred Flatbread and it looked like a $4 Celeste pizza (see photo). I ordered 2 virgin pina coladas and was charged the normal cost. I've always gotten virgin drinks at a lower cost as it's the alcohol that brings up the price. My friends got the shrimp and grits which, while was tasty, was on the salty side. Again disappointed that it came with 4 medium size shrimps. I would have expected at least 6 for the cost. The ambiance was very nice, ocean side seating which is why I gave it 2 stars. Service was ok. The restaurant was quiet so I was put off that the staff was just sitting around when there was a lot of trash on the floor in eating area that they could have cleaned up. I visited The Fred 11 months ago. One of my closest friends is contemplating going there. I told she and her husband that as long as they do not stay in the Murray room or any rooms on that side of the hotel complex over the kitchen, that they may or may not be OK because I don't know what the rooms that are adjacent to the Murray room look like. although this room is cozy and beautifully decorated, I highly recommend that the Murray room and any rooms over the kitchen should be completely gutted because they are infestedwith roaches. The Murray room comes with kitchen. There is an access door on the right of the kitchen that has a huge gap around the entire frame of the door, allowing huge roaches and water bugs to enter the room. Housekeeping left a trap full of dead roaches on the right side of the window between the bottom cabinet and the wall. I took pictures and brought them to the front desk and the staff did nothing. They even refused to do anything After I I explained that I would take pictures and post this on all social media platforms. Although the aesthetics of this hotel is beautiful, nothing is worth sleeping in a roach infested room. Instead of enjoying what I paid for, I had to eat out throughout my entire trip. We planned to cook, but could not under those filthy conditions. In addition to the filth, the bathroom was nasty. There were gecos all over the outer portion of the windows. You could see them while you're in the shower and people can see your silhouette. There was mold on the frame of the entire window in the bathroom. I had to purchase my own toilet paper for my entire trip. I asked the front desk if they could please send someone with toilet paper and they never did even though we physically showed up at the desk they still didn't send toilet paper. We purchased our own toilet paper from the local Kmart that is currently out of business. The light outside the front door of the hotel room. did not work so we had to purchase a flashlight to see how to get down the stairs at night. Besides the roaches, the staff here like the staff at Carambola, McDonald's and Kmart is extremely rude and unhelpful. Most hotels here in United States, at least where I live in Virginia Beach are extremely accommodating and will help you with a smile and almost bend over backwards to help you. There in Saint Croix, chiefly The Fred and Carambolas staff had no sense of urgency or willingness to help. I'm sure that I'm not the only person that noticed but the staff couldn't muster enough kindness to say that they apologize for the inconvenience. I also noticed that most of the staff on island is predominantly blackAnd I noticed how poorly they treat each other as Black people, including some of the guests, but will bend over backwards, kissing a non-black guest ass. I know this this while sitting at the bar how a black guest waited to be acknowledged for a drink for 22 minutes, but when a Caucasian person stepped up to the bar, the staff stopped what they were doing and helped this newly arriving guest. I saw this again at the front desk, where a black couple waited while the staff allowed to Caucasian couples to jump in front of them before they would assist the black couple. Just sad. there's no way to redeem themselves after behaving this way. I think coming to visit for the pool or a drink is acceptable. However, I would never recommend that any of my friends or family Visit the friend to stay overnight. . read more

If you are contemplating whether to "Sleep with Fred" while staying in St. Croix, allow me to indulge you with insight: This was our second trip to St. Croix and the same for The Fred. We are now "repeat offenders." Yes, while you are seeking accommodations for your stay, you may see/read that this already award winning resort is not even finished...but DO NOT allow that to deter you from taking the plunge into this budding resort experience. Why The Fred? The pool! The view! The hospitality! The modern rooms! The spa! The view! The hot tub! The beach access! The convenience (Ask for rides with "Priscilla" (a stretch golf cart) to local venues around Fredericksted! Jeff Printz and Topher Swanson are turning this town around!!! ...and The Fred is definitely putting King FREDerick back in Fredericksted! After ascending the mosaic tile-faced steps, upon arrival, your senses will heighten as you enter the lobby. So... The Fred should be better. It has premium location, a beautiful building and patio, and extremely mediocre food. The service, as well, is unreliable. I have had some of the best service, and some of the most tedious service. However, none of the food that's I've had was memorable in any way. On one trip I went with my wife, and getting service from our waitress was a chore. At one point I had to ask another waitress for service, as each time ours walked anywhere nearby she avoided eye-contact with us at all costs. The mint in the mojito I ordered was not muddled, so the delicious punch of mint I was hoping for was more of a cautious whisper. The chicken sandwish I ordered had the cheap buns from the grocery aisle on it, and the tomato feta salad is quite literally 1 tomato cut in quarters and sprinkled with feta. I will say, the fries and tots are always crispy and fresh, but for some reason ours came with a single cup of ketchup instead of the 3 unique ranches that were advertised on the menu. Ultimately, it seems like ownership or management doesn't care too much for the standards of service and food, as otherwise it wouldn't be so consistently mundane. read more

They tended to our every need The hotel and room: This is a boutique hotel that is less than a 30 minute drive from the airport. It reminds me of a bed and breakfast as there are several houses (and more under construction) with rooms in each. The main house is very colorful, cool and relaxing. Our room was beautiful and even though it was situated in the front of the house we did get a sliver of a water view. The private bathroom was cute. My only gripe was the rain shower - you really have to maneuver not to get your hair wet. The room was missing a full length mirror and a closet. We didn't need a closet - I was just comparing it to every other hotel that I've stayed at. The pool and additional rooms are under construction. This is an adults only hotel on the beach. The Fred has changed, and unfortunately for the worse. I first stayed at The Fred about three years ago. It was comfortable, the staff was friendly and responsive, the shower had reliable hot water, I didn't need to worry about beach- or pool-chair availability, and I slept with the windows open to the ocean breeze. Excited to share this with my girlfriend, we went back in March. I wish we stayed somewhere else. Our room had no hot water for more than two days. We notified the staff, who assured us fixing the faulty water heater for our room was a priority. But, they seemed flustered by other events at the hotel -- more on that later -- and made us feel like we were inconveniencing them by asking for working hot water. Worse, it was clear they knew about the faulty water heater before we checked in -- they said it had been an issue after we asked them to look into fixing it -- but didn't mention it upfront and couldn't give us the option to switch rooms because they said they were fully booked. We did have periods of hot water on our third and fourth days, but those periods were short and unreliable. Shortly before checking out, we politely requested a partial refund for the inconvenience cause by the lack of hot water and other issues (described below). The Fred offered us 10%, for a total of just over $100. We politely asked them to increase the percentage, they told us they would consider it, talk to the manager, and get back to us. They never did. Another drastic change as compared to my first experience at The Fred is in the crowds and quiet time, or lack thereof. The Fred's bar, pool, and beach areas were crowded. And not only with hotel guests, but with guests visiting for the day or part of the evening. At most times it felt like The Fred cared more about and catered to its daily guests than its longer-term hotel guests. Finding open beach chairs was a challenge. Getting prompt drink or food service, without going to the bar, was a challenge. And finding a quiet location -- whether on the beach, by the pool, or even in our room -- was often impossible. There was music playing at The Fred, either from a DJ or live musicians, many hours of every day of our stay. While we both love music, especially live music, this was too much. It was constant. And despite The Fred staff's promises, to us at the hotel and in response to other guests' online reviews, quiet time at night was a myth. For multiple nights of our stay there was music playing loudly well past 10 pm; one night it went on past midnight. In our room, with the windows closed, it sounded like we were sitting in front of the stage or DJ booth. Even with earbuds and earplugs we could hear the music. This was a problem, especially because we booked diving trips that departed early each morning. Other, less serious, issues: The toilet water was consistently yellow and foul smelling. The room had diluted hand soap to the point that it was just water. While the bed was made regularly each day, our coffees were never replenished, nor were our bath towels until we made multiple requests. The Fred's staff is kind. The views are beautiful. And it was a great place to stay in early 2021. But given the issues we encountered in March 2023, I would not stay there again. read more

The Fred has a great location and the rooms are nice (if you get a room). We did however have no hot water for showers. If you book with the Fred, do not book with them directly. Book with another booking site. We made a reservation for 2 nights originally and changed it to 5 days later only needed 1 night. We sent emails and spoke with the staff multiple times assuring us that they changed the reservation but could not get a confirmation in writing. When we went to St. Croix, we went to the Fred in person a few days earlier when we were in the area. They assured us that they were holding a room but didn't change it to a reservation because it would be too complicated with the deposit that we had for two nights. Long story short, we had no room when we got there. Karen did make it right and eventually found us a room. However, we are still being charged an extra $502 because their records show our original information for the two nights. And to make matters worse, we are being charged for incidentals for the 2 nights that we did not stay there. Don't book directly with the Fred. read more

Beware! We've had two bad experiences eating dinner at the Fred and we will not be back. Last year our service was awful and our waitress was stoned. We decided to give it another shot this year since everywhere can have an off day but that just wasn't the case. Our waitress was rude, the food was overpriced and the quality was mediocre at best. Our waitress brought the bill the total was $112, we gave her a credit card and when she brought it back she had charged $122 mysteriously adding a $10 drink that had not been ordered. When we questioned it she claimed she had refunded and corrected it but it took a week of calling our bank after the fact to get it sorted out ourselves. read more

The location is incredible BUT... We recently stayed in the Murray Room for 7 nights. We arrived very excited as we have been to the island several times and have enjoyed the Fred for drinks & sunset views before. The resort has renovated historic rooms and a gorgeous courtyard pool/restaurant/bar area. Staff were all pleasant. The first night we couldn't get the the ceiling fans/lights to work, the TV remote didn't work, and had lots of water pooling in the top shelf of the fridge. We notified management the next day, but nothing was done to fix it. I know these are minor, but this was the first day. On the third day, we asked for 2 clean bath towels & were told they would be brought when the wash was done, but they didn't bring any until 4 days later. Thank goodness we still had 2 clean towels for those days. That night our hot water stopped working in our room. We reported this 3 times during our stay & had no hot water until our last night (7th night). We had 4 days of cold showers. Very disappointing to come back to after diving. This is an adults only resort, which we wanted, and a quiet location during the day. You can hear the music from the hotel bar playing until late hours (the parties are open to the public), and there were cars racing & blaring music all hours that you can hear. Our room wasn't directly on the street and we heard it loudly. Check your bill closely. We were charged for mini bar items that we didn't use. They didn't fix that charge after we notified them, and they made no compensation for the lack of hot water for the 4 of our 7 nights there. Overall the location is convenient to walk to Frederiksted, we found close parking on the street or in the side lot every night, and the courtyard is lovely, & the beach /sunset views are gorgeous The rooms are historic & comfortably updated, but not everything worked as expected. The resort is adults only, with amazing views but not a quiet retreat at night. Overall, we would consider staying there again if the price was reasonable but with different expectations. My partner & I were staying at a different hotel, but spent one day in Frederiksted, and we got lunch at The Fred, AND OH MY GOD! The food & service was amazing! It was so amazing we actually got the day pass to use the pool & hot tub. We also ended up not going to our reservation for dinner at a different establishment to come back! We had the honor of meeting Chef Jay, and they were amazing. Their food is out of this world. I transcended into a different plane of existence. My partner prefers a lighter batter on fried fish, and she went out of her way to make that happen for him! We cannot wait for our stay at The Fred in December, and cannot wait to be spoiled by Chef Jay's food!! read more

We came to St. Croix on a cruise ship and lucked out big time in finding this gem! As we walked to find an establishment we found The Fred. We paid for a day pass at the gift shop and exited gift shop into an oasis! Absolutely beautiful resort with adorable atmosphere. The pool is amazing! The bar spectator! We could choose from beach chairs on the sand or front row chairs on deck over looking water. These are just ocean side. You have plenty of choices pool side if you would rather. Once the kitchen was opened we enjoyed steak subs that were delicious! Drinks were great! Prices here were beyond fair for what you get! Bathrooms and resort were kept clean and nice. Live music played. Manager introduced herself and was so friendly and kind. My husband snorkeled most of the day and found the most beautiful treasures! If we ever get back to this island...The Fred is where you will find us! Thanking our lucky stars we stumbled upon this place by pure chance! read more

Came in for a drink and a bite. Cute boutique hotel but the food service is so bad. For starters we were asked to move from a two seater table on the water to the bar because they were short on staff. OK no problem, I understand that Julia's was our server. If you want to call her that. She seemed annoyed the whole time we were there. She took our order and we waited 35 minutes for our food to come and then found out that some other server took my husband's meal. So she had to resubmit the order. About 20 minutes later Julisa took off and told another server she'd be back. She came back 10 minutes later with laundry detergent. Really? It was a total of 50 minutes. My husband finally asked someone else to go check on his food. Of course, it was sitting in the back ready to go. Tre the bartender was friendly, he filled up my drink two separate times, and brought us our check when we were done. I tipped him cash because our server didn't deserve even a dollar even though I still tipped her. read more
