Our stay was not all bad, just extremely stressful and confusing. This place is actually a grouping of tiny one cottages and duplexes right on the beach, with a very nice pool and an active bar. My family is from St. Croix, and in the past, Chenay Bay is generally considered a nice place to stay.
Now I have to share the negative. We stayed here for the last two days of our 10 day vacation. This was meant to be a romantic, secluded getaway for my boyfriend and I from all of the busy family activities we had been doing earlier in the week.
We were greeted upon check-in by a polite young lady at the desk and a very excited lady named Micki who we assumed was a concierge of some kind, because she told us that she was going to give us a $50 watersports coupon and could get us 20% off of some excursions around the island. We thought that was great, because we scuba dive and we had all of our gear, and were looking to get over to Buck Island. This is where it started to become disappointing.
I guess she didn't know the difference between scuba diving and snorkeling, because she was trying to book a snorkeling excursion until we explained to her that we needed a boat to take us to the dive site, not to the actual island. She was ultimately unable to help us with that at all, and didn't call back, even though she said she would after looking into it more.
She also said that she couldn't give us the $50 watersports coupon because she had to have a 20 minute meeting with us, which she had scheduled for our check-out day. So... we realized that this was just a timeshare thing, and even if we sat through it, what were we going to do with this coupon on the day we leave the island?!
So, that was about one total hour of our time just WASTED by this weird and confusing "welcome" that you get when you check in at Chenay Bay.
I did not go on vacation to sit through your time share spiel. Sorry. If I'd known that was part of staying at this place, I wouldn't have stayed there, and that's the truth.
Now... about the room. We stayed in room #29. The room had broken mini-blinds, but was WONDERFUL overall. In St. Croix, not everything can be perfect or brand new, but this room was close to being perfect. Until the middle of the night, when our air conditioner broke. It was still making cold air, but it was also making a sound so loud that it repeatedly woke us up. It was a loud, repetitive, metal-on-metal sound that would come and go. We could not sleep, so we went to the front desk.
The guy working there was either half asleep or a little bit rude, I'm not sure. Either way, he did not seem pleased to help us with our issue.
He offered us a smaller room, with a smaller bed... Room #24... and I would have taken it, except that it smelled so bad... like spoiled milk.
I told him that we'd just stay in our room and turn off the A/C instead, and he treated us like we had just wasted his valuable time, which really annoyed me. It's not like I want to be awake in the middle of the night by loud noises, only to walk around the place in my pajamas to be offered a room that smells terrible instead. Come on now.
The next morning, I asked the young lady at the desk if any other rooms were open for that night, and she kindly moved us into room #10, which was smaller, with a smaller bed, but it smelled clean and the A/C sounded completely normal, so we took it.
Room #10 was great, but the hot water did not get hot in the shower, and the room overall had little to no water pressure, which makes it hard to get soap out of your hair. So to clean up, you had to take a long, cold shower. :( We tolerated it, but were overall just stressed and annoyed.
The next evening after dinner, we stopped by the front desk to kindly tell them that we were not going to be able to meet with Micki about timeshares, and that we were unhappy about our stay and would like to be contacted by management. The same guy was working at the desk and he said "So you have had even MORE issues here than the ones you told me about before?" almost like he didn't believe me.
Anyway, after telling him everything I wrote above, he gave us the general manager's card, and I guess it's MY job now to contact them, in spite of the complaints I made on three separate occasions to front desk personnel.
I understand that there are new owners, and locals have told me that the new owners seem nice and will do a good job eventually, so I hope this place gets better soon. As of this moment though, I would not recommend Chenay Bay to fellow travelers, and I have told my Crucian family to have their loved ones stay elsewhere when they visit.
It's just too confusing and stressful. read more
