In order to keep the celebration going and not put a damper on our evening, we decided not say anything. The next day, at about noon, I reached out to the MicMac Bar and Grill through their web site. Promptly, I received a telephone call. I was impressed . However, instead of addressing the issue, the manager asked me if I had made a reservation. Then he asked me why I didn't notify the server at the time. I told him the reason which is the same as I had written in my communication to the Mic Mac Bar and Grill. So, the Mic Mac Bar and Grill did not address the highly questionable steak that we were served or the cold baked potato. We were offered a $50 gift certificate. This was offered after I was put tested about if I had a reservation, if I had addressed the server. The thing is, I should not have been served sub par meat or cold baked potato. I should not have been grilled on my performance in addressing this matter. So, moving forward, I will not be returning to an establishment that I have been going to for 30 years. Not because of the poor quality of meat that they say was strip loin, not the cold baked potato, but because of the way that I was treated after the facts were presented to the management. So, I will be breaking away from a thirty years history of eating at the Mic Mac Bar and Grill ( I used to know it as the Mic Mac Tavern) because I can be treated much better elsewhere.

The crowds were surprisingly light on a Sunday night. It was a nice change of pace with a chance to get away from the mob scene on the water streets.

The Long Version: My husband and I had dinner at The Wooden Monkey and we enjoyed it. I always prefer organic and locally sourced ingredients as they are fresher and as a result usually taste better, so that's one of the reasons it was on our list of places to try. I initially wanted the haddock burger and was thrilled to hear that their bun (which they bake in-house) was a plain bun without sesame seeds or poppy seeds. However, our helpful server, Angie, informed me that the breading for the haddock contained sesame seeds, so I had to order something else :( My backup plan was the Fish Cakes ($17.50). The default side is "roasties" which is their famous roasted potatoes, but Angie recommended a side salad instead since the fish cakes contained potatoes and it would be a lot of starches without vegetables. This was a great suggestion. I did want to try their roasties so I got the half salad half roasties upgrade (an additional $5) and chose the Sweet Apple salad. My husband got the salmon ($29.25). He chose roasties as his side, but his salmon automatically came with some roasted vegetables too. My fish cakes were good, but I felt there could have been a bit more fish. The potato to fish ratio was high. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I liked the homemade tartar sauce. The roasties were seasoned potato wedges. I liked the thin and crispy ones. The thicker and softer ones, not so much. However, my husband gladly ate them, lol. The Sweet Apple salad was delicious (Angie said it was her favourite when I was deciding on that one or the Beet salad). It had mixed greens, apples, carrots, daikon, goat cheese, walnuts and green onions. The dressing was a maple mustard dressing, which I requested on the side and it arrived as requested. The ingredients were fresh and I really liked the flavours of the salad. There was a tiny bit of coleslaw on my plate too. It was good (vinegar instead of mayo based) but was only a tiny mouthful. My husband enjoyed his salmon. I had a taste and agreed that it was great. My husband also got a beer (Propeller pilsner $9). The restaurant has a monkey motif so the decor is full of monkey stuff. I ordered: 3 oysters (2.5/5): from New Brunswick and served with horseradish, lemon, and a sherry sauce. I had one plain, one with lemon, and one decked out. I think the oysters were very small. The lemon and sherry were the best combo. The horseradish is overpowering to the natural flavor. Honestly I'd skip, this, because you can get very good oysters elsewhere in Halifax. (I learned later in my visit that oysters in the Atlantic have had a very bad season due to disease, so this may just be particularly unlucky timing). Tuna Tartare with Allumettes Frites (5/5): Definitely the highlight of my meal and the only thing I'd order again solo. The shoestring Allumettes Frites were crispy, and the tuna Tartare was excellently balanced. I'd definitely recommend this dish. Raw Scallop, Tomato Water, Green Olive (4/5) - a very unique dish that almost reminds me of elevated sashimi of scallop. It was about six scallops with garnishes and they were very flavorful with the natural scallop richness. I would share it, I got a good sense of the flavor profile with 1-2 pieces personally. Cloud Ten (mezcal, ube pineapple foam, and vermouth) (4.5/5): Genius cocktail. I'm a huge fan of mezcal and the pineapple foam is a great offset to the smokiness. I sipped the foam at first and then let it melt into the mezcal and got totally different flavor profiles. Great job on this one. On recommendation from a fellow solo diner, I got the Grey Owl goat milk cheese to finish my meal, along with a side of bread (+$4). This ended up being my second favorite dish of the night (4.5/5). The cheese was excellent and the bread had an excellent char and chewiness. Shout-out to my awesome waitress Kenzie for her recommendations and hospitality. Excellent service in keeping my water and utensils fresh, and the recommendations for dishes and local things in Halifax. It is decently loud inside with an intimate small plate setting. I don't think I'd go again as a solo because my preference would definitely be to share apps with at least one other person. Overall, a great date setting or for someone who wants an elevated experience of seafood. Service was very friendly and the tuna Tartare and Cloud Ten were standouts.
