But, I tell the staff where she's going and what she's trying to catch (& release), and they alwys point me in the right direction. This year for Christmas I wanted to get her a certain fishing rod that she was drooling over. I popped in. They ordered one in for me, and I had it in time for the holiday. Top notch fly fishing shop in San Diego. From the beginner to the advanced they have you covered! My 10 year old has grown to love fishing. He's spent time on deep sea boats, lots of lake spinner fishing and now has an interest in fly fishing. I have very little to no knowledge of fly fishing. We went to the Fly Stop and were amazing! The staff greeted us and immediately were eager to share their knowledge and learn our interests. After explaining our planned trip, the researched (and showed us how) what flies were the most successful for the areas we were fishing. After researching they took us to their expansive collection of flies and equipment to help us select the right gear to hopefully have a solid trip. Wow . . today I visited the Fly Stop to prep for an upcoming trip to the Eastern Sierra. A few questions by a young staffer soon turned into a debate about the ethics of releasing trout in the warmer months, then a lecture about their survivability in warmer water, water temperature, levels of the river and soon about the origin of the water I would be fishing. Frankly, I doubted his assertion the weather evaporated as much water as this gentleman seemed to suggest creating a lower level in the river . . . After admitting I didn't know the river was spring fed, the staffer didn't fail to remind me no less than five times I was wrong in my belief this section of river was controlled by LADWP. OK, got it . . but frankly, if these gentleman are so knowledgeable about conditions 350 miles away, I would appreciate a little gentle education not "you're wrong" . . . . TO THE OWNER . . . sorry, not going back to the fly stop. . . My Recommendation . . . wait until you get to the area you will be fishing, ask the locals and use your own intuition. Will not be using their guide service, will not be recommending them to anyone and will definitely recommend another location for their fly fishing needs . . read more

I'm actually shocked how bad of an experience I just had at a fly shop. I feel like I just walked out of a used car dealership. I've been to many fly shops and this was hands down the worst one of all time. I walk in looking for a new fly line and there are two guys there. One is tall with long hair and the other is a young guy normal height. The tall guy is super rude and aggressive. His sales tactics are pushy and aggressive. The younger guy is very nice and helpful. They didn't have the rio gold line I wanted so he recommends another line. When I ask about other lines he gets upset and questions my judgement. I hope he reads this and understands that fly fishing is one of those things that everyone has their own opinion on what is best/better and it comes down to what you like. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy thinks he know better than everyone else. As someone working in a store there to offer advice and help people, how can you get mad if they don't go with what they recommend? I've never experienced this before in a fly shop and it blows my mind. When I go to buy a line that was a lot more expensive then the one I wanted (because they didn't have the one I wanted in stock) I asked for a discount, which is very normal in local fly shops, the guy got aggressive and upset and literally says "No! We don't do deals here, and when I tried to give you advice on another fly line you didn't listen to me anyway" Mind blowing experience today. Great selection of brands and products. They also have any kind of fly you could possibly need. The staff is helpful - two are also guides, so having their experience is very helpful when making gear decisions or picking up the right flies for an outing. The location could be better (for me at least), so I don't make it out as often as I'd like. This is the kind of shop you want to keep around in San Diego, so make sure you vote with your dollars and skip amazon and big box stores online (many of the prices are the same anyway). read more

Stopped by the Fly Stop while in town visiting my in-Laws. I have wanted to visit for a while and I've always wondered why there is only one fly shop in the San Diego area. Well today I found out why.. that have everything.. such a great selection of Flies, rods reels.. everything.. but what I was really impressed with was the Fly Tying materials and tools. A friend and I used the Fly Stop's guide service quite a while back. Our outing went beyond fishing in that we both got an education about how to catch bass in our local lakes. Our more recent day on the bay was incredible also, lots of fish. If you've got a list and know what you want, these guys can help you. Far more valuable, if you don't have a clue about what you need they can help you with that too. The Fly Stop consistently provides me with insightful suggestions that are helping me to become a better fisherman in saltwater or fresh. It just doesn't get any better than that. Great shop! I used to frequent SoCal Fly Fishing but when they closed their doors I was forced to find a new shop. The options are limited in San Diego but luckily The Fly Stop is a good go to shop. They have a great selection of rods and other gear for every budget. They will also price match and can match dealer promotions. They have the best priced flies I have ever seen especially their online catalog. What this shop does extraordinarily well is promote themselves by hosting club meetings, guest speakers, film festivals, and other events. I do miss the laid back atmosphere and the employees at SoCal Fly Fishing but the Fly Stop has done a great job filling the void and I am always happy to shop there. read more

This is a very unique store for fly fishing. The store seems to specialize in flies for rivers, streams, lakes, ocean, surf, lagoons, along with fly boxes, leaders, tippets, and such. They also do have some rods and reels and such. They do not oversell you, they tell you as it is, and educate you conservatively as well. Most of the trout flies seems to be priced at $1. Ocean and lagoon flies seem to start at about $2. Employees are great resources for fly fishing newbies like me, they will help you along. Give them a budget, like $20, and they will pick out $20 of good dry flies, nymphs, and the like, based on your fishing needs. The flies are in containers on tables, arranged in rows and columns, you take a plastic cup like from ketchup at a fast food restaurant, and start picking. read more

I've never written a yelp review but after going to The Fly Stop, I felt I needed to. What an experience! Went in with no experience at all and Dave couldn't have been any more helpful! He patiently went down the line explaining everything from rods, lines and flies, and never did I feel pressured into buying something. The rest of the staff was also very friendly and kind. Shopping at The Fly Shop was the most enjoyable shopping experience I had done for my Christmas shopping. I was immediately assisted as I walked into the store. I had a price range and I knew I was shopping for ocean and ice fly fishing and that was the only information I knew. The employee (Dave or David) was as helpful as you could possibly get. He picked out a fly box for me and asked if I approved while choosing multiple flies to fill the box with that would remain within my price range. I also purchased a Patagonia hat which was an amazing price compared to other stores. Dave or David (Can't remember exactly) even ran out to my car because he had found a hat within its packaging rather than the displayed hat. This is an excellent and well stocked fly fishing store. I came here to get flies for a trip to the Sierras to go fly fishing. They have a large variety of flies and they are inexpensive. I know shops in the Sierras will charge 4 or 5 times as much for a single fly! The guys that work there are extremely friendly and helpful. They want to supply local fly fishers and get more people into the sport and have a really good attitude. While they have fished all over California and can give advice for any trip you may want to do, they also hold clinics and have a charter/guide service for San Diego saltwater fly fishing. I have not attended one of their clinics yet, nor used their guide service, but it sounds exciting! I'll definitely be back. read more

Over the years I have visited and patronized many fly shops. They all have their unique personalities,some had more gear and looked upscale and others were in someone's garage. The Fly Shop at the Fly Stop falls somewhere in the middle in that regard. I believe they are business that produces flies that decided to set up a shop in the warehouse portion of their building and as such the entrance to the shop is at the rear of the building. Some shops have guest speakers or tiers visit their shops for their patrons. The Fly Stop has performed this service aa well or better than any shop I have ever patronized. Last night they had a presentation on Carp fishing. They emailed me twice, the second email was on the day of the event which I thought was a nice touch. Now I don't carp fish and have never been interested in carp fishing but Conway Bowman was the guest speaker and that is always worth the price of admission. The presentation was a slide show narrated by Mr Bowman and used slides from both local and faraway destinations. Needless to say the show was a complete hit. I enjoy the passion Conway Bowman has for his subject. I mean I got excited about Flyfishing for carp. The show was loaded with information on what a carp looks like when it's feeding, how to fish effectively and the dos and don'ts involved in stalking this game fish. What made this show different from any I have been to was after the presentation the shop presented a panel of local carp guides and they proceeded to have a question and answer session with the audience. This format gave the audience a look see into how different guides agree or disagree on the subject of carp fishing. The shop is nicely stocked if not a little cramped but you can find the gear or fly tying materials you need and the products are tipped toward the local fisheries as they should be but they have the gear for a faraway destination fishing trip. I met the guides and they are impressive bunch. I plan to hire one of them for a largemouth bass trip. Last, I got a chance to meet Flyfishers from the local clubs, people I have seen posting on Facebook, and old friends. I joined the Golden State Flycasters club last night after talking with some of their members and so in closing I think these shows give you a chance to meet other Flyfishers which really helps to expand your horizon including going Flyfishing for carp. read more

YesTFS makes and sells god flies. However, prices have been recently raised which negates any discount. Also, if I'm rewarded with points why does the reward expire? What if I don't need flies for awhile? So while I'll still shop at TFS I'll also continue to look around elsewhere. read more
