    North Face Endurance Challenge

    North Face Endurance Challenge

    (1 review)

My first trail race. And gosh was it hard!!…read more Even though North Face lists the race in Madison, WI, the actual location is much closer to Milwaukee than Madison. Good to know if you want to book a hotel in the area. Be prepared to drive a bit, 'cause Eagle is tinee-tiny and accommodation is rare in the immediate surroundings of the park. Anyhow. The Endurance Challenge is specialized in ultra distances, 50K and 50-milers. Yup, some people do that. I didn't. I signed up with a couple of my friends for a mere half-marathon which was supposed to be challenging enough since it was a trail race. When you are used to running on pavement in the city, it's an interesting change of pace. With a degree of difficulty and elevation change of 2 out of 5, we all thought we could tackle it. We did, but not without hurting quite a bit. Change of terrain - from pavement to rock, sand and grass - and hill climbs of 300 feet (with a total change of elevation through the race of 1,200 feet) definitely kicked my ass. Running in the woods, surrounded by pine trees and nature, is a huge draw. I enjoyed it tremendously, and caught myself a few times just inhaling fresh air, trying to make out the different smells that were delightfully assailing my nose. The course was clearly indicated, and even in my most lonely moments, I never thought that I would get lost and forgotten at the bottom of a ravine. Kuddos for that. The festival was also quite nice, and was offering ample amounts of food - both pre- and post-race - as well as water, coffee, iced baths, massages and a few sponsor tents. The atmosphere was nice and friendly, packet pickup was easy, parking was easy and overall I am really glad to have participated in such an event. 3 stars though (well, 3.5 rounded down) because of two major things: - the first aid/water station (out of 2 but I get it, it's more difficult to set out stations on a trail than on the road) handed out water and coke. COKE. I don't care what "Born to Run" says, Coke is not for everyone. It is an excellent sugar kick maybe but it's full of gas. I had incredible stomach problems for most of the second half of the race, and was in terrible discomfort afterwards. Awful experience. - I understand that a half-marathon is not much of an effort compared to a 50-miler but still. It deserves some recognition. It may sound silly but we runners love our medals. Not getting one was a huge disappointment, and something I really don't understand. Please change your ways for next year races, it would make SUCH a difference. In any case, trail running is the sh$t, and will humble you. Give it a try. Miscellanea: - registration fee for the half between $65 and $100 (depending on how early you register), and capped at 750. - parking at the Ottawa Lake Welcome Center is $5 but participants receive a free pass on race day. - no medals but a customized tee-shirt and arm warmers. Still...I want my medal! - no porter potties on the course so... plan accordingly?

First time checking out this store…read more Some items still seemed priced quite high so it's definitely a give and take but found some really great deals. Without spoilers I was able to get my brother some nice unique fishing gear themed items for his upcoming birthday all 30-50% off normal list price. Great selection of dog items, toys, lots of outdoor gear for dogs right now including vests. Oh course lots of good snacks! They also have Keens for $50 which is a great price and don't knock them till you try them! I love my Keens for paddle boarding, whenever I go to Sandy settings for hiking/walking type purposes since I can easily rinse away the sand. Cashier was really nice and commented on the snacks we ordered asking if we had tried the flavor before noting it was her favorite and then mentioned other good options.

The selection was okay, but it just depends what you're looking for. Keep in mind they are part of T.J. Maxx, Marshall's, etc. so you may find something you love but there aren't a lot of color or size options. If you find something you like, get it right away because it may not be there the next day. They have a nice selection of clothes, that's the majority of the store. You will be able to find plenty of activewear like yoga pieces. The shoe selection was pretty good too, men's less options. There's a dog section with treats, beds, bowls, things like that. Another corner of the store has smaller sections for camping, fishing, hiking, general exercise stuff like weights. I didn't see in stock kayaks like the commercial shows. There's a small section with more natural types of body care items and snacks. The selection online is better and can be shipped to the store for free which is nice. I'd stop by again if I was in the area.

Date of visit: November 17, 2023…read more I visited looking for running shoes, after spending several minutes in the section I was asked if I needed help and I declined, but maybe I should have said, "yes," the shoes were kind of all over the place, not arranged by size and often not near the corresponding display shoes. Making matters worse is that the shoes are double-stacked, meaning I had to pull out the first set of boxes to see if the boxes hiding behind them were 1) the shoes I wanted, and 2) the right size. This took quite a bit more time than I had anticipated spending on this activity! Once I finally found a pair that was in my size and I liked, I went up front to pay and while there were several employees hanging around the door, only one of them was at a register, so I had to wait for her to finish with the customer in front of me. Then after my transaction was complete, she told the crew that she was taking her break and someone would need to be available in her absence.
