I admit it - I didn't do the best job of planning our trip to the British Isles. As a result, we were limited to but two nights in Inverness, and by extension just a single day to not worry about having to go someplace else. After some thought, we made the somewhat controversial decision to not visit Loch Ness, instead we gallivanted around town, taking in the sights, stores and sandwiches.
And the day was humid as we trudged up the hill to the Kingsmill Hotel. Wife took a nap while I visited the pool to destress a little bit. After all of that we didn't really want to go back into town - we enjoy drinking and not having to worry about driving afterwards. And we didn't want to use the hotel's grossly overpriced restaurants. So, as a result my wife did some research and realized that the Fluke was but a couple of blocks away. Why not?
One has to admit that the Fluke's menu is, to put it mildly, extensive. Almost as much so as America's Cheesecake Factory. Regrettably, only about 60% of it seems to be available for consumption. And I have to warn you to not expect table service, at least not very quickly. If you want to be served this century, you have to swing your elbows and go to the bar and order as if you were in a bar. Which the place kind of is.
But once that food arrives, a good time is to be had! I had prawn spaghetti which was smooth and outstanding, along with one of the local brews. The dessert menu included a Bailey's sundae, which I ordered based on the name alone - and it more than met my expectations. Wife was also pleased with what she ordered, a tostada salad and cream puff sundae.
Unlike many of the places we frequented, this restaurant seemed to be very locally oriented - no patrons with silly hats here. We witnessed a group of men in stiches trying out their American accents. Juke Box was a-hummin' too, with our trivia favorite "Sweet Caroline" causing a bit of a reaction.
So, expect good food, good prices and a good time, even if you do not actually get what you originally wanted. read more
