The location cannot be beat with this hotel- you can literally walk everywhere, or even bike to the south end wineries if that's what you want to do. The place itself is an up-cycled old motel - the design is pleasing and usable and there's lots of unique touches that are fun to explore. We liked the free parking and friendly staff, and also enjoyed the design of the king rooms. They offer local wine at check-in which is a nice touch. The only downside is the street noise and noise from other rooms is loud and distracting. Would love a bit of sound proofing, but people aren't usually in Walla Walla to sleep. read more

Go straight to the other 2-3 star reviews and take it from there. It's been said by others far better than myself. That is, high concept and pretty to look at but pretty awful to actually inhabit. Spaces are not made for human bodies but human eyeballs and a sort of fake modern sensibility where everything is hard and steel and angular and we don't relax we just kinda perch in places for a few moments drinking white wine while open-mouth laughing at big hat wearing friends in summer dresses. Run on sentences can't fit in the room. Towel racks don't fit or dry the towels. Clothes racks don't fit the clothes. Bathroom door looks cool and slides shut leaving wide gaps all around. Window shades don't keep out the sun. AC kinda does what an AC does but does it with whines and growls. Metal everything which means everything is a weird shape, excessively robust, and not appropriate to the jobs it's been given. I've never appreciated cheap plastic more than when it's gone. Finally, the inherent motel-ness can be astro-turfed over but it still carries the sad vibe of divorced dads living out of suitcases and using hotel stationary to ink their suicide notes. Maybe it's just me. With that said. The lobby is awesome. They did a great job and it feels fresh and fun. Free popcorn? Oh thank you. Service staff are friendly AF. Love love love the Finch! It is a restored motel and the rooms are large and spacious. The desk staff is so friendly and super helpful. They actually are a text line where you can text and ask for more pillows, cutlery, whatever you need! This came in handy a few times and I was even able to secure late check out on the text number. The location is great- just a few blocks from downtown and across the street from the grocery store. The area feels safe and nice. The beds are insanely comfortable! And they have really nice bathroom soap. I will always stay here in Walla Walla! read more

Affordable, quirky little motel with easy access to downtown Walla Walla. Restaurants, bookstores, wineries, coffee shops, a bakery and a candy store are all within minutes of Athens Finch. The room is small but has everything you may need except a microwave. The microwaves are available in the lobby with complimentary coffee, tea, hot cocoa and popcorn. The Finch is plagued by the same issues most high concept design motels are infected with. The design is amazing, thoughtful, clever, and well executed. The colors are perfect, the art touches superb, the location fine. And if you know what this place looked like before, the results are stunning. It is a quality motel made of durable materials with helpful, nice front desk staff. But when it comes to running and maintaining a hotel on the daily, The Finch, like many other cool kid motels, falls flat. When we entered our end of the hotel (interior doors) there was a sign on the door saying "Please close door gently" and when opening the door the handle nearly fell off it was so loose. Obviously it has been loose for a while and hasn't been fixed. The interior hallway smelled oddly dank not unlike a wet dog or several wet dogs. We were told we were on a pet-free floor, so we couldn't figure out what the issue was. It was 6 PM when we rolled in and a loaded maid cart was parked in the middle of the small hallway like it had been there all day making it difficult to get luggage, bikes, and people past it. It was still there in the morning when we got up. Our room was stylish and well equipped on first view, however, as we moved in we found a ceiling light burned out, a bed side reading light that looked great until night when we tried to use it and found it completely broken. And then, on getting into bed we discovered two of our four beds were half made and missing their comforters entirely. Luckily, we brought our own Rumpls. It's this kind of sloppy innkeeping that ruins the entire vibe of The Finch. Yes, it looks great! And the showers are beautiful and stocked with a solid supply of quality Malin + Goetz bath products and the two robes were cozy and clean. But to enjoy The Finch you most put more importance on form over function. If you can, then by all means give The Finch a try. Otherwise, I'd suggest you just fly away in another direction read more

I can't say enough good things about the Finch. I drive through Walla every year and have been so happy to find the Finch a few years ago when looking for new dog friendly places to stay. Walla used to be a one hotel kind of place, but now we have many choices! My choice will always be the Finch now. The location cannot be beat. The Finch has been hijacked by minimalist design so much that the rooms have become impractical. The beds have no nightstands, but tiny little metal plates big enough for an iPhone. No tablet. No laptop. And certainly nothing else in addition to a cell phone - keys, wallet, a glass of water. And, it's not like there's no space. There is at least 4 ft on either side of the bed. There was no iron in the room. We had to ask for one. It seems like the hotel has forgotten that most people pack clothes in something called a suitcase. Clothes in suitcases get wrinkled unless packed by the fussiest version of people who are not fun at parties. When we asked for one, they told us we had to come to the office. In literally every other hotel, it would have been brought to the room by the hotel staff. Hence, the four stars for service. Don't get me wrong - the hotel is nice. It's just a bit too self aware on the impractical style front. read more

Took a moment to get use to bathroom sink location outside bathroom however it works well. Great staff and service. Pro - location, location, location, and decor. Con - if your room is on inside of buildings you have to keep blinds closed entire visit because of the view out to walkways to rooms. Also peculiar placement of full mirror in bathroom. 4.5 stars The Finch motto is "everything you need and nothing you don't". This newly renovated "hotel" used to be a "motel" in a previous lifetime, so don't expect the Four Seasons. The room and bathrooms are on the smaller side, but who comes all the way here to stay in the room? Sleep here then go and see the wineries, golf courses, bike paths and restaurants! There are no elevators, you have to carry your luggage up the steps yourself (no bell desk), and the covered parking lot isn't enough for all the cars, so if you come in late, you'll have to park across the street in an open lot. One thing you won't see in the online reservations (call them to book this) is the BUNK ROOM. The room feels like a dorm room with 2 bunk beds (sleeps 4). The beds in the bunk are super comfortable too. This would have worked out for us but because this hotel is pet friendly (yay!), my son had huge allergies to whatever pet was previously in this room so we ended up getting another room for the second night which was fine. PRO: -LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Walking distance to Whitman college & all the wine tasting rooms in downtown Walla Walla. This alone is what allows them to charge hotel prices ($250-300/night! August 2022) -COMFORTABLE BEDS! Bunks, king beds were super comfy and bedding (sheets etc) were excellent. -one block from Safeway -TEXT COMMUNICATION- they don't have phones in the room, so you can text the front desk anytime and get a quick response (re: check out, renting bikes etc). Shout outs to Jessica, Bri, Ashleigh and Jason who all were on top of things. -CRUISER BIKES-they have 2 bikes on site for free rental -PET FRIENDLY-this could be a pro and a con, depending on who you are -STAFF SUPER HELPFUL-all of them were top notch! -retro style refrigerator in room -simple breakfast snack in mornings with coffee, and popcorn/snacks in afternoon, wine tasting in evening! -cornhole and other small games in courtyard CON: -no elevators (only 2 floors) -no laundry facility -no on-site restaurant/bar (think of this more like an inn) -walls are not really soundproofed (bring earplugs) read more

The only hiccup we encountered was we booked a king, but was put in a queen, as soon as we bought it to their attention, it was taken care. Would definitely recommend and stay again read more

The Finch is The Perfect Hotel / Motel... *if* you're traveling with pets. Or want to go eat with your pets. There are two great restaurants with outdoor patios right up the street. You can see them both from The Finch's free of charge parking garage. Which isn't very big. Luckily we arrived in time so we didn't have to drag our luggage across the street from their overflow lot! Don't let the comp breakfast or free bike rental fool you! When we checked in we were explained that it's not really breakfast and their bike is already unavailable... Exceptional bed & bedding ! Definitely 5 stars there. Our room was nice & clean. We didn't run out of anything. There was one hiccup with our window shades. The track seemed to be off or something. Cute place! We had both reservations and " reservations" about booking a motel at hotel rates. They have done a great job renovating modernizing and specializing this unique place in an incredible location walkable to do much. They were accommodating and helpful and the room was quirky, clean, airy snd fun. Reminds me of the ACE hotels but without the hipster social scene, more about the scene itself. Everything is comfortable, the beds, the space, the BATHROBES ( like wearing a thin down blanket. Can I wear this around town? i don't want to take it off) and solid. amenities are unique, We enjoyed the fireplace at night and the easy access to everything, including Whitman which we were touring. They have a little store inside that sells products that are quaint and practical. We really liked it here and would recommend to anyone. We tend toward high end hotels or places with lots of basic amenities, so this was a gamble for us that worked out well. That said, parking was included and easy and wi-fi same. They have bikes so you can bike or walk to get your "steps in" and breakfast is served all around you in cute little restaurants. Oh, and you can bring a dog ! Great place! read more

Super cute and stylish hotel within walking distance to all of the restaurants and wine tasting on Main Street. We stayed with our teenage kids and reserved a separate room for them that had bunk beds which was a fun experience. We also brought our dog and the hotel had a water bowl, tennis ball, bandana, and waste bags waiting in our room. The rooms are reminiscent of a Motel 6 and I discovered that this is a remodeled boutique hotel that use to be a national chain. What impressed me was how they turned the bones of a chain into a place that is cute, hip, and contemporary in its design. Kudos to the architects and interior designers. Enjoyed our time here and will absolutely stay again. Pros: Quick walking distance to everything on Main. Many rooms can be accessed from the outside (instead of interior hallways) so ideal during Covid. Pretty much the location makes it worth the stay. Easy walk into town and a quick walk to Whitman. Rooms were fine, but like previous reviews need a bit more care while cleaning/repair. Our shower door didn't close completely, so we had a bit of a leak. Cleaning cart parked outside our room for our entire stay. Walls are thin - we must have been off season, so I can only imagine how loud it would be during the busy summer season. If I was reviewing The FINCH on the comfort of the bed and linens (most important in many ways) I would have given them a 5! Slept like a baby! Our room was facing the office and at night even with everything closed there was a lot of light from the parking lot coming through - and at times a little noisy, even with our white noise machine that we travel with. I love the community feeling of having coffee with folks in the lobby in the morning, but I don't love having to get dressed and leave the room to get that cup. I'm sure it's a cost saver, but perhaps they could consider charging a fee if you wanted a coffee maker in the room for your stay. The decor of the room was really ORANGE!, and as someone in their mid sixties, LOW. Definitely got my squats in getting up from both the sofas, and the bed. The room also seemed to be sort of unfinished, (We had a suite) there wasn't any art in the living space and the placement of the microwave and refrigerator was haphazard. Having said all that, the location is awesome - easy walk to all of the fun downtown district. The grounds are fun and relaxing thanks to zen like rock wood sculptures and raked pea gravel The parking is simple and plentiful. From a "pyro's" point of view the communal fireplace in the evening was a really nice way to enjoy some of the wine we collected along the way. Last but certainly not least, the entire staff was friendly and helpful, and truly added to the long weekend of fun! We'll be back!!! read more

This is a tale of two hotels. Actually, one is a hotel and one is a motel. To quote Dickens, "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." The Finch is a glorified motel, built with concrete block construction. Everything is put together with the least expensive industrial materials. There are no closets. Metal hooks are provided for your clothes. The small sink sits in the room, and a sliding door provides privacy when you shower or use the toilet. The Finch is a 21st Century version of a Motel 6. The other tale is about a new hotel, done in a hip style, with funky stenciling on the walls. The shower is powerful and large. A large room is available and the location is excellent. Toiletries come from Mallin + Goetz. Staff are uninformed about wine and Walla Walla's wineries, but they are very nice. One can say it's industrial chic, while another would say industrial cheap. The Finch is very schizophrenic. A member of the staff phoned two hours before our arrival to inform me our dog was not welcome in the suite I booked. It was too late to book another accommodation. We ended up in a room I did not want. A note in the room proclaimed, "Your dog should not be left unattended in your room." How is this a dog friendly hotel? Are we in Walla Walla to spend the entire time in our hotel room? After our experience, we would not book the Finch when we return to Walla Walla. read more

Such a clean and quiet place to stay! Esthetically pleasant as well. Room stayed cool all day/night which is important for the summer time. We brought our dog with us and they provided a bag with a blanket, a water bowl, poop bag and a bandana. Super sweet of them! I would definitely stay here again. read more

We decided to come here for our mini honeymoon and explore wineries! After reading so many positive reviews we picked The Finch. I will say the location was great and walking distance to everything downtown. Other than the location our stay was subpar. Our room was dirty with stains on the bathroom wall and you could tell the shower had not been cleaned. The next day I asked the cleaning staff directly to make sure they got the stains off the wall and she guaranteed me she would and to give her 2 hours. That evening we came back from a long day of wine tasting and our room had still not been cleaned. I would try another hotel before coming back. read more

A 3* rating. Room tends to be on a smaller size. Good location as it is walkable to downtown Walla Walla. Not much of amenities. The fire alarm/smoke detector came on all night - just blinking incessantly. They do have an arrangement with the local winery for tasting (we were there on Thursday so a local winery was pouring a sample of theirs). Bed is very soft and sunk if you try to move around. Excellent location, super comfortable and clean. The lobby and outdoor area is clean and hip, everything feels high quality without being extravagant or over the top. The bed was wonderfully soft, luxurious, and clean-a definite highlight of our stay. The room felt modern and new and we appreciated the minimalistic design. We loved our stay and had so much fun being able to walk to downtown just around the corner! The only negative was a slight funky smell in the hallways, but that did not exist in our room. We paid sadly paid $400 a night which sucked because normally they rent out for $160 a night. Room doors are so heavy and slam every time someone shuts the door. You can hear everything walls are paper thin. This should be considered a quick in and out hotel. read more

This place is ok. Very thin walls and ceiling. Bonus is they allow dogs. Every time someone would walk above us, it would get the dogs up. Clean place, very simple, comfy beds. Absolutely do not go to the Safeway across the street at night, sketchy people and drug deals going on right in the parking lot. Not very safe at night. Our locked bikes were stolen in their parking lot right outside rooms. They do not have security cameras anywhere on the property and police say theft is a problem there. Locked up bikes and cars are not safe. Theft ring uses electric saws to cut locks. Bring everything inside your room. Bad theft ring in Walla Walla. Another hotel guests bikes were stolen the next day. Wouldn't be surprised if an employee is in on it. read more

We loved our stay at the Finch! Years ago, this was an older chain motel (similar to a Motel 6). It has been totally renovated and is delightful. The staff could not have been better. We were there two nights in late September 2021. It is very close to Whitman and easy walking distance for downtown dining and wine tasting. They have a lovely fireplace area outdoors.
