quiet cove where you launch from

If you're tired of trying to dodge all the water traffic in the main section of Lady Bird Lake, give the eastern section a try! I was able to try stand up paddle boarding for the first time through a Google Offer for the Expedition School -- (5) 90-minute sessions for $30, um, no brainer. The place doesn't have a store front, just some shipping containers and tents. The workers are friendly and do a good job of explaining what to do when you're a newbie. The price is regularly $10/hour (I hear the other SUP places charge close to $20/hour, what?!). Their boards have seen a lot of use, so don't expect brand-spanking-new boards. The launch area is in a little cove so if you want to stay there you can or you can make your way out of the inlet and traverse the area towards the dam. There's a cute little island there and the greenery is gorgeous! While I love the main Downtown view you get from the downtown section of LBL, I must admit that I prefer this serene setting over Downtown. If you have visitors, take them here and save yourself some $$!

My girlfriend and I went stand up paddleboarding for the first time today. We chose Expedition School because it's only $10 per hour each and well yelped. It didn't disappoint :) Boards are fine, we got a quick tutorial, and we were off. We had both surfed in the past so balance wasn't an issue. The waters in this area are calm and open. We only ran into 4 other paddle boarders in an hour of paddling. We went to I35 and back in about 45 minutes then tried some yoga on the paddle boards for the rest of our time. Let me tell you, yoga on paddleboards is some seriously tough stuff! I'm told they have lessons here for it and might come back for it. Leave sunglasses or things you don't want wet in the car :) Can't beat the price, friendly worker, fine way to spend a hot day.

SUP with the hubby. Can not wait to go back!

Her energy and humor make spending four hours in a classroom on a Saturday morning not half bad. Be sure to give yourself a little time getting there as it is on the northbound side of I-35 and there is no designated turn-around lane on the frontage road and the light takes a while to cycle through. Overall the class was very informative and Cynthia Jones really knows her stuff. We spent a lot of time with the mannequins for hand-on training, which makes sense to practice and practice to ensure your skills are there when you need to use them. We were provided a book (purchased through the website beforehand) that we referenced and were allowed to take with us. There is a test at the end of the class that you must get all the questions correct on, so be sure to pay attention!

I signed up on the website. There are class times available 1-2 times a week. You can also do all your training online and come into the center to get checked off on the skills portion. I may consider that next time when my time is not as flexible. Note that Life Sustaining Training offers other courses like PALS, ACLS and CPR. Jessica was my instructor and the class was a total of three students including myself. The class consisted of instruction and information given by Jessica and a video. The students had to be able to demonstrate what we have learned on a mannequin for the skills portion. The mannequins are actually higher quality than I have ever practiced on which was a refreshing change. They had sensors on them to gauge if you are doing chest compressions correctly. Overall a great class, great location, and easy to sign up.

John has been training Austinites for 12 years and he keeps it fresh, funny, and smart (and most importantly, memorable!) every minute of those 6 1/2 hours. I was exhausted when I showed up this morning (we're in the thick of SXSW atm) and it seemed unlikely that anything he might do or say would stick, but I am feeling 100% Certified and Ready. Minus one critically important star because the Red Cross is so disorganized and unprepared and frankly messy where its finances are concerned. When hurricane Harvey hit, I was on the horn looking for ways to help with my Spanish, my blood, my time. Never got a call back. I waited for days. I called several numbers... even one that our Mayor Adler provided. NADA/zip/nothing/ZERO. Fed up, I sought CERT and CISM training elsewhere and finally crowned those incredibly useful hours with today's skills. Total: Fifty hours of emergency and disaster relief training! Bring it on. On second thought, don't you dare bring it on :) Thank you, John! You're a jewel in a box full of old potatoes. Sorry, Red Cross, but I'm calling it like it is.

There are a few things that set this program apart from others I have seen. 1 - The mentorship provided by the owner of the company, Allison Coleman. The unrelenting support she gives and the way she lifts people up are unique and refreshing. 2 - The comprehensive material covered. This program provides a wide range of information and produces postpartum doulas that not only understand how to care for families in the postpartum period, but also the ethics of running a business in this industry. 3 - The way the materials are presented is clear and thorough. I appreciate the mix of video education and reading so it keeps the participants engaged in the program. I highly recommend ABG Postpartum Doula Training to anyone looking to enhance their understanding of all things postpartum doula!

She provided an invaluable amount of knowledge and experience and was a non-judgmental soundboard for me. I can't recommend Allison enough! The absolute lack of organization, professionalism, and student support is absolutely unreal. To start my class did not have a dedicated teacher for the first 2 months, the instructors that were "stand ins" told us they filled this class before ever finding an instructor for the class. Second the student support is an absolute joke, if you email it takes 3-5 days to answer, if you call them out for wrong doing on their part they won't answer the email at all, funny enough two of my class mates needed to pay for a course extension and they got a response the same day... so when it comes to money they will answer but when it comes to support they don't answer. Lastly their in person classrooms are the worst I've ever been to, they give you a skills sheet but don't have 80% of the equipment on the skills sheet. I feel like by going to RChealth for my EMT I was robbed of a good education. I have many more horror stories with RChealth but it won't fit in the review. I will end this with some advise, DO NOT attend RChealth if you want to be prepared for a career in EMS or fire.
