From the very beginning with the measurements, to the alterations, the fittings, to the second dress , she handled all of our cares and concerns with complete compassion and professionalism. In addition, she made us look like a million bucks on a mountain summit in the middle of the White Mountain wilderness! I had the pleasure of getting Irenes information from my wedding dress shop and having her do my alterations. she was able to perfetly bring my dress in so that it did not fall down during the reception. she even booked an extra appointment for me to try on my dress and calm my mind before the final alterations were done. for my bustle she gave us several cards so that people knew exactly what to do. Do not recommend. Poor communication and hidden fees. She turns jobs into "rush" jobs when you request them by a date three weeks away. Miss her call? She yells at you for disrespecting her and her other "customers" and then tells you about the hidden fees Why do I say "customers?" Because they aren't, they must be her closest friends because they also yell at you when you ask about the non-disclosed fees. Then they start to video you because you don't agree. The only redeeming quality here is that the work was good. It's not worth the shaming if you feel you should be treated properly. read more

Joan Gallagher is a genius. She has done a number of alterations for me on pants that I need shortened (as it is almost impossible for me to buy anything off the rack that fits), all at a reasonable cost and turns around within a couple of weeks. She is currently working on my wedding dress, which required a LOT of work - shortening, putting in about 9 permanent bustles, creating cap sleeves, and replacing the sash at the waist. A huge undertaking and it's coming out beautifully. Her ideas have worked amazing. She's also working on my maid of honor's dress, and two of my bridesmaids. She understands right away what is needed to make any garment look right on you. I will continue to use her services as long as I live in the area. read more

Just an OK tailor. Sometimes you will wait for her to return to the shop as if she goes out to lunch or grabs a coffee. She's lost a couple of things and found them later with never an apology. She'll rarely do a rush but if she does it's like the world is coming to an end with her attitude. Not the friendliest of people but unfortunately the only game in town unless you want to drive to Portsmouth. read more

Went to the lady here once before and it went really well, but recently tried to go back and get a dress hemmed for an event a little under a week away. I know it was on really short notice, but she was pretty rude to me about letting me know that wouldn't be enough time to get the alteration done. read more

Quality work for a very reasonsable cost. Usually turns items around in 2 weeks. She's very honest too - she knows what she's doing and she'll tell you if something isn't going to look right post-alterations so that you don't waste your money. read more

don't go there with anything important, such as a prom dress. i wanted it taken in and i got it back a mess: crooked where the zipper met at the top and bunchy where she took it in, even hem job was marginal. she stated she had "trouble" with it. in that case, call me and tell me you can't do it! i also wanted an invisible zipper replaced. looked like it was done in middle school home ec class. read more

I brought my bridesmaid dress to Joan at Exeter Tailor Shop about 2 months ago. She took 3 weeks (absolutely no rushes), was not friendly or even cordial when I brought it in or picked it up, and did a terrible job altering it. I had asked for cups to be put in, the hem to be brought up, and to have the dress taken in. She put the cups inside the dress instead of attached to the existing cups, which pulled the front and made it look horrible. It looked like anyone could have done a better job on the hem. She did say it "was cut on the bias" so it was very difficult, but there was a noticeable unevenness front and center. She took in the back of the dress fine, but did nothing to the sides where it flared out slightly. When I tried it on to pick it up, she made no suggestions to fix it other than that I should get it professionally steamed and see how it looks after that. I paid her $85 for all this, which I regret now. She said I could bring it back after steaming, but after two horrible interactions I didn't trust her and was running out of time before my sister's wedding. Her changing areas are very basic and I felt uncomfortable changing there while she was sitting facing my direction sewing. The curtain is short, doesn't close all the way, and there is an office chair taking up half the space. I took the dress to another tailor in Manchester afterward, who was able to fix all the mistakes Joan made. The other tailor corrected the cups, hem, and took in the sides as well so the dress was very flattering afterward. This tailor also charged me $85, but the job was done correctly and in just 2 weeks. Since I had never been to another tailor before Exeter Tailor Shop, I didn't know what to expect. But after going to the tailor in Manchester, I realize what a bad business she runs. I'm surprised she's been in business 30 years with her cold attitude, poor facilities, and basic sewing skills. I don't usually write bad reviews, but I felt I had to warn others about this one. If I had read the mixed reviews on Yelp I might have avoided this disaster and gone to Manchester in the first place. What a waste of time and money! read more
