Back in Montgomery for the weekend, I had to stop by The Exchange Bar at the Renaissance--one of my old go-to spots from back in the day. This place has always given casual-but-classy energy, perfect for a chill drink with friends or a cute after-date vibe. Even though we pulled up earlier in the day, they still had live music going--nothing too hype, just a guy on guitar doing some soft rock and country classics. Gave the space a cool, relaxed feel. I didn't order any food this time, but my friend got a burger that looked solid--thick patty, good char, all the fixings. I stuck with the cocktails. Don't remember the name, but it reminded me of a fruity French 75. Whatever it was, it was strong, refreshing, and clearly made with a little love. I had two and was feeling just right. The Exchange is connected to the Renaissance and on some nights might be your only option to entertain yourself. But within in their business hours. Yes, this comes off as a bar, but they keep more of a restaurant hour than bar. What is nice about this spot is that they have a huge outdoor area where a lot of the people can mingle. Complete with fireplaces and heat lamps for the colder days. Some nights you will have live entertainment out there and other nights you will just have the entertainment of having conversations with your colleagues. Inside it is a bit crowded and loud. But they seem to have a mighty fine time in there. If sitting outside, it is the easiest way to make your way to the restroom, but that is having to fight through the crowd. What I didn't like about this place is that when 10 o'clock rolls around, everything shuts down. The lights, heat lamps, and fire pits all shut off at that time. Almost like they are telling you to get out and stop enjoying yourself. I know that you want to close up and send your employees home, but I think there can be a subtler way to let your customers know it is that time. read more

I like this place....Montgomery is my home town, thing have really changed a bit for the better in this area of town. The exchange was a bit pricey, but great. My guy and I stopped for appetizers and drinks, we ordered the fried green tomatoes and I was pleasantly surprised with the presentation, all very good. We also order mozzarella stick which were huge and hard- I'm not a fan of those. The drinks were good, we order top shelf margaritas which had to have been $15 a piece... they were good and really put me in my happy place. Being seated on the patio was a great idea, but it was pretty dark out so we couldn't see, it would have been nice to have some type of lighting on the tables... maybe a candle or something. I often eat at the Exchange when going to concerts in the Performing Arts Center. I like the burgers and the flat bread pizzas. The other night there were three of us wanting a table and there were plenty available but we were never seated. In fact the at least four staff members were within 10 feet of us but never, even once, looked at us or spoke to us. It was as if we were invisible! The Exchange is at the Renaissance Spa and Hotel. There's garage parking in the back of the hotel but not sure how much that costs if you're not a guest ($12 if you are a guest). Or the municipal parking lot in front of the hotel (next to Embassy Suites) is only $5. There is a gorgeous outside patio area that would have been ideal if the thunderstorms hadn't drenched the party. Inside is nice and relatively good size (thought it was going to be tiny tiny). Drinks were good but they closed at midnight on a Thursday. I guess if I were working the next day, I wouldn't have wanted to hang out much longer but I happened to have a day off so we went over to The Alley. I like the Exchange though. The service has been great this far. Ordered a Smashed Burger and wife is having the Cascadia. Mentioned we are going to the show and was assured there was time to order and eat before the show. $2 Draft Special going on and quick to get that 1st one. The food came quick but there was no fries like I ordered. Our server was quick in.correcting the issue. The Smashed Burger was off the chain, I would recommend it to anyone. The Cascadia was big and had to help the wife finish it. All in all, good place to eat and if you get there early enough, you'll get superb service. read more

Went to this spot late night after a long day of exploring the city and I really liked it. It's connected to the Renaissance hotel and was super convenient. I really hate giving this place a bad review because vibe and location are incredible. The outdoor seating area in the heart of downtown is a perfect space; it's just a shame that it's not any good. A typical experience at The Exchange goes as such: A friendly server takes our order for three drinks. Twenty minutes later ordered drinks arrived in plastic cups. (If a gin/tonic can be screwed up The Exchange is the place that can do it for you.) We pay our tab, carry our drinks to the nearest trash receptacle, and head to a place where we know a decent cocktail awaits. I only end up at this place when I'm invited to meet up with someone. When that happens, without fail, we don't stay due to the poor drink service and the uninspiring plates of food that pass by. If you do happen to find yourself stuck at The Exchange I would recommend sticking to beer and try not to come thirsty. read more

Really cool vibe- I loved having the ability to just sit outside on a nice night with live music. However, that was the only thing I really liked. The food was fare too expensive and there just wasn't enough options. The server was nice, but everything was just so slow (ordering, getting our drinks, getting our food, and particularly paying our bill). We were also told it was still happy hour, but then got charged full price for our drinks. Luckily, the server changed the price once we pointed this out, but of course that added 20 minutes to our time there. Faced with the scant alternatives within walking distance, we spent some time at the Exchange while we were staying in the hotel in which it is located. Laid-back ambiance, although it was pretty damned warm for Labor Day. Decent selection of draught beers. My beautiful lady and I each ordered a beer, which are served in plastic 16-ounce cups. Holy Hell! Two beers cost $18.71!!! I've never drank beer that expensive when nekkid women weren't involved. There's a separate menu from the House restaurant inside the hotel, although we didn't eat anything. There were people sitting under the covered patio (the entire thing is covered, actually) eating and the food looked and smelled delicious, though. A large crowd greeted us Sunday night after we wandered out after a great meal at the House inside. There wasn't an empty table available, so we reclaimed the same seats at the bar that we had occupied earlier in the afternoon. A guy with a guitar was playing a singing, at a pleasant noise level that didn't preclude conversing with my lovely lady. Next time we're in Montgomery, we'll be back. Next trip, I'll ask about beer specials, because almost $9.50 for 16 ounces of draft beer is retarded. read more

The only place that was open past 10 that was not Buffalo Wild Wings or McDonald's. It was really good they have a nice outdoor seating area with live music until 10 pm. Or you can sit inside where it is less noisy. The menu is not that big but what we got was really good! The mahi tacos are delicious along with the collard greens dip! Portion sizes were smaller. We were not staying at the hotel that houses the restaurant/pub, but we decided to have dinner here because they allowed us to have our dog with us in the patio. The outdoor setting was very welcoming, the service was great, and the food was delicious. We thank our server for excellent beer recommendations. Since it was a winter night, the fire pits they had going along with the heaters made the entire area very comfortable. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. Stopped in this restaurant after a long drive to the hotel. Was disappointed to hear that the menu was limited due to the kitchen being remodeled. The atmosphere is pretty cool dim lighting and acoustic guitar player in the corner, very chill. The waitress brought me the limited menu that they had and I ordered the exchange burger. To my surprise it was wonderful. When you're told that you have a limited menu I was not expecting much but this burger had pimento cheese fried green tomatoes smoked bacon, It was really good. Amazing array of Cocktails, Highballs, Martinis, Margarita's and much more. If you like Cocktails this is the place to be. One bartender in particular, David M, squeezes his own sour mix as ordered. The difference in taste is astounding. His Margarita is hands down the best Margarita I've ever had in my life. During happy hour, 5-7pm I think, it's only $3!!! He also has dozens of uniquely special, signature drinks that I can't find anywhere else. The food at both restaurants is really good. I enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere and the live music was good however it was turned up so loud I could not hear myself thinking. There was such a wide range of ages present. 20-30-40-even 60 year olds. There were some really drunk guys that kept walking between everyone and I kept waiting for staff to escort them away but I never saw them. Eventually they stumbled out of the bar and hopefully NOT to their cars. I would go back with friends and enjoy a beautiful night out. I'm pregnant so I'm not drinking so I'm unsure how much the drinks cost but assuming how wasted everyone was getting I think it's safe to say it's not overpriced. read more

The hubby and I really enjoy this place; especially for a quick drink when waiting for a concert at the IMPAC. the wings and other nibbles are very good and quick to come out of The House restaurant which is right there at the Renaissance Hotel. I do not give negative reviews but this was absolutely brutal. Waited 10 minutes for someone to even acknowledge my existence and then another 40 minutes for a hamburger that's right a hamburger. The patio is awesome. I saw some food come out and it looked really good. For as crowded as it gets, the wait staff was awesome. When we first arrived we could not find a seat but soon seats came open. Although there are alot of seats.... when a band is playing... get there early. The drinks are strong but pricey for what they are.... If I lived in Montgomery... i would probably go to The Exchange often. read more

The Exchange is located in the Renaissance Hotel complex, at which we stayed. The inside is darker and has a more laid back, refined feel. The large outdoor patio has it own bar and also serves food as well (which looked good, but we didn't have the opportunity to try.) The drinks are very well made, but a bit on the pricey side (not bad considering that it is a hotel bar.) A lot of locals seemed to gather on the crowded patio for the live music at night. The music was very lively and enjoyable. Overall, we enjoyed our evening her very much, and will definitely be back when we are in town again. read more
