For me this is a great place to study! Their arrangement of chairs/couches and tables makes it a cozy and comfortable setting for me to spread out with my laptop, books, snacks, and coffee. My only complaint is that they close a little earlier than I'd like at 7. read more

To preface this bad review I will say I love The Empty Cups mission and I think they are doing, so that's where the two stars come from. My husband and I were literally the first customers in at 8am this morning, he ordered a cold brew and I ordered a pour over. Ten minutes passes, fifteen, and then finally after 20 I checked upfront where I was told that my pour over was taking a bit longer than normal.... with taking the risk of sounding condescending, I'm not sure how many factors there are in making pour over coffee that could cause it to take 20 minutes other than she simply forgot to start it. Finally at the 30 minute mark my coffee was done.. except by now it was room temp. Anyway, I was super bummed but determined to try and enjoy my cup of joe. I have a lot of sympathy for people that work in customer service/ the service industry because it can be rough, however one think I don't have patience for or sympathy for is blatantly poor customer service... if I'm paying 4 dollars for a cup of coffee I expect it to be timely and the appropriate temperature. This is a hidden gem of a coffee shop. It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you get in you will be pleased. They definitely know their coffee, with 4-5 roasts to choose from and all of the standard preparation methods for the discerning coffee drinker. I had a pour over with their light roast and it was one of the best coffees I have had in Knoxville so far. They offer a full 64 oz Chemex at the highest price I have ever seen ($11), but you do get up to 6 cups of coffee from that. As icing on the cake they have adult coloring books on the tables. I didn't have time when I visited to try but I plan to go back just for that. Oh, and they are a non-profit that supports adoption programs :) read more

I had high hopes for The Empty Cup. I just moved to Knoxville. I was looking for a place other than Starbucks where I can get a good latte and read my book and the morning news. I love the concept behind this place, and the pictures make it look very comfortable. My first disappointment was with the pastries. The choice was limited and it looked like the choices were all savory. The second disappointment was the latte. I asked for whole milk, but the taste was off, so I wonder if I got something else. The barista seemed distracted and gave me a paper cup when I asked for a mug. The third disappointment was when I sat down. Those comfortable looking chairs were actually uncomfortable and cheap. The fourth disappointment came a half hour later when I vomited my latte. It wasn't because I was ill, as I elt great later. I won't be back. I didn't like the setting of Starbuck's the next day, but the latte was great. read more

Very disappointed. Went in on 12/31/16 at about 11:15 am. There were two employees working and they had a few orders to work through. One of the employees rudely snapped at the other employee working stating "we are not taking new orders I need help making drinks". The two employees never greeted me, never apologized for the wait, and never said we will be with you asap...
