With that said - the experience of shopping there has changed...pretty dramatically. I won't pretend that Carolina was ever a place for a bargain - it's always been a high end store with items that would be considered splurges or even out of the range of possibility (for the majority of people). In the last year, the prices have skyrocketed. What used to be the highest priced item is now the norm. $600 sweaters, $800 slip dresses, etc. Listen I get it, it's Mill Valley and an increasingly wealthier demographic with inflation being insane. But also, this sucks? Your prices have literally doubled. What once felt like an occasional shopping treat now just feels alienating and over the top. The owner / buyers have the best taste in town - if you're reading this, could you please bring back some of the more moderately (reasonably) priced brands? I think a lot of the non ultra elite 2% Mill Valley-ites would be super appreciative and love to support you again. But as of now, it's literally impossible. For what it's worth this is not just an opinion of mine but fellow friends who just want to go back to their favorite Carolina. I appreciate you taking the time to read and consider!

Last summer I bought a top there from the company Velvet and asked to order another. The salesperson said I would hear back, and I never did. I ended up buying it online for $30 less. Recently I went to the store to buy a belt. The salesperson directed me to the cubbies around the store but wouldn't answer questions about available sizes. All she told me was the brand. Again, I went online to buy the belt at a lower price than I would have paid at the store. I will return to the store to browse for brands but will buy elsewhere until the customer service is comparable to the quality of the merchandise.

The vibrant spring colors at Bella drew me in. It was almost closing time, but the lovely sales associates let me browse and try on a few items. The store is beautifully arranged with contemporary women's clothing, bags, jewelry, and accessories, as well as some home/gift items like pillows, candles, and more. The clothes are grouped in color families, which really makes for such a pleasant shopping experience. I tried on a handful of items and found a summer sweater to take home. I'll definitely stop in again when next in the area. And, they have locations in San Anselmo, Greenbrae, and Mill Valley.

There is also another store they own around the corner that has more items that has a separate entrance. They had some really beautiful purses that are the brand "Anna by Anushka". They are hand painted bags with different scenes. The one that caught my eye was the purse with a scene of Santorini, Greece. It was really lovely. They had a really nice variety of women's shoes and sandals. I tried on a pair of embroidered and hand painted sneakers. There were flowers and butterflies all over it. They only had two sizes left and both were too big, unfortunately. The owners were very nice and tried to find me something else that would work. I only really wanted that particular shoe. Oh well. Next time I'm in town, I will stop by again.

To be honest, I am really not one to write reviews on businesses...and even if I've had a bad experience - tend to just shrug it off. But I'm still thinking about my visit today and feel compelled to write a review. There was no one else in the store, and I was not greeted upon entering. I had been in the store a few minutes, and I heard 'hello'. I looked over and smiled - thinking the owner was saying hello to me. But she actually was saying hello to an older woman that came into the shop. The owner was so friendly with this other customer, I wondered if she even knew I was in the store. Feeling a little sheepish - I continued to browse the racks. Then, a group of 3 women came in and she had a warm hello for all of them as well. Apparently, she had already pulled some items for them and set up dressing rooms prior to their arrival. I found a couple of items to try on and went to the back to ask for a room. She ignored me at first. No one was in the 2nd dressing room - but she tried to put me in the storage closet. I actually had my 14 month old son in an Ergo carrier...and she wanted to put us in a storage closet with tons of things that could fall on him. She finally relented and let me in the dressing room, but only after I promised that I wouldn't take too long. (I only had 2 sweaters to try on.) The owner treated me as if I was a burden to her. She did not want to spend any time helping me, any time to even greet me, and just seemed simply irritated that I was even in the store - wanting to try something on. I would recommend crossing the street and going to Gala. They are always so gracious and welcoming...not to mention they have the most beautiful and precious things for sale. (That's exactly what I did today...and I picked up a beautiful Chan Luu necklace and scarf.) Lastly, I wanted to mention that there is a small dog in Nicolette. (I didn't notice it at all, as she was in a bag behind the counter.) I found this out on my first visit about a month ago. My husband and son came into the store while I was browsing. My husband let my 14 month old son stand on the floor. He was not even walking around - just standing. The dog started barking and then charged at him. Thanks to my husband's quick reflexes, my husband scooped up my frightened son - and thankfully he was not harmed. I also want to mention that I was never greeted, nor did the owner speak to me the entire time I was in the store. Only when her dog almost bit my son did she say anything to us. She never apologized, only stating that her dog "loves" kids. My son was not hurt, and it could have been worse. So I just chalked this up to maybe not a good day. But now after my 2nd visit, I should have seen signs of the way the owner conducts business and treats people (even babies) in general. Again, she never apologized. She never even acknowledged my husband or myself...she just kept trying to show us that her dog really likes kids by sticking her dog in my baby's face. My husband was gracious enough to allow her to do this, but I wish we just got out of there like bats out of hell. That's what I felt like then - and how I felt after my 2nd visit to Nicolette.

When I called on that date, I was told there wer still unsold items and they wanted to keep them a bit longer. They gave me a second date to call back, and on that call I was told to come in and get what hadn't sold. When I arrived, I picked up 2 items and was told 3 had sold, but staff couldn't tell me what happened to the other 2 items, so I asked for a callback. On that call, I learned two of my items had already been donated -- despite what I'd been told earlier. When I asked about the discrepancy, I wasn't trying to make a scene, just get clarity. Instead of acknowledging the mix-up, the staff member defended it as standard policy and cited their volume of consigners. A policy on unsold/undonated items is completely reasonable. But if that's the policy, communicate it clearly upfront -- and if there's a miscommunication, a simple acknowledgment goes a long way. I can't recommend this shop based on how this was handled.

You don't always see a quality vintage section in consignment stores and this one was definitely thoughtfully curated. Taste wise for my resort wear, I tend to look for either specialty Hawaiian brands like Ava Sky/Fighting Eel or midlevel designers like White House Black Market. I did come across a couple summery items that peaked my interest without tags, but of the tags I did see, they were only slightly above what I would consider the norm. All in all, I'd be interested what their non-COVID impacted inventory looks like and I'd likely return if we were in the area again.
