My taking the six-week course at The Edit Center changed my life and career in so many positive ways. Working on two real films that would go on to screen at major festivals, sitting face-to-face with their directors, being taught and encouraged by some of the best editors in the film business (people whose movies have won Academy Awards), was a completely unique, immersive education whose lessons, seven years later, I still draw from.
I took the course because I was in post-production on a documentary and simply wanted to learn more about the editing process. But it was such a revelatory experience that I came away with a new career path. Soon after the class ended I was hired as an assistant editor by one of my instructors, and within a couple of years I edited my first feature. Since then I've cut narratives and documentaries that have screened and won awards at festivals like Cannes, Hot Docs, BFI London, LAFF, SXSW, and have had the opportunity to produce several films and pursue my own projects as well.
Beyond all that, The Edit Center is a ridiculously fun place. The network of graduates and instructors is big and supportive and diverse, and I've met so many great people as a result of being part of that community. It's also a great space to work from, so when a director asks me where we should rent an editing room TEC is always my first choice.
I never thought I'd make my career as a film editor, but it's an amazingly rewarding, creative, collaborative life, and it all started with that six-week course. read more
