Nice pub. Requisite historic feeling. Quite big, yet very popular so it was quite busy and packed. Only downfall besides the crowd was that they didnt have tequila. Sad face. read more

The oldest pub in Cambridge, apparently it has been around since the 1500. It was a very nice and unique ambiance with a old theme. This was the place that Watson & Crick announced that they discovered the double helix structure of DNA, so it was a must go for me! I tried the DNA Ale and for main course, we split the fish & chips, the lamb shank with mint, and the meat stew with puffy bread on top. Al the items were tasty, I love the meat and mushroom stew with that puffy bread. The mint also added a nice unique taste to the lamb shank. For the dessert we tried the Belgian Chocolate Torte which was served with a side of vanilla sauce and it was so rich and yummy. read more

We love this pub and its history. Unfortunately it's quite crowded most evenings, but really worth a trip if you're about for lunch.

Who doesn't love the Eagle? Between Crick & Watson's association with this pub, the RAF room in the back, and the beer garden in the summer, it's a classic Cambridge institution. Yes, it gets packed and can be hard to find a table, even though it's huge, but it's still a great place for a pint. The food can be sort of hit or miss, but all in all, I'm a fan. read more

"The Eagle" the most Famous pub in Cambridge.While in Brittan we were on a quest for the Bst Cask Ale as well as the best Fish and Chip. This was the the winner in my book(and we did pubs for a solid month).The fish when brought to you was GI-NORMOUS! It was from one end of the platter to the other!So light and crispy Very flavorful. At the end of the meal our waitor brough both ladys a complimentory "Pimms". I had never had one before, but I ordered them after that one.The restaurant/pub is always busting at the seams with customers (which tells you something right there!) There is one room that has on the ceiling names and dates of RAF Fighter Piolets from all over the world who returned from the war and signed their names on the ceiling using only cigarette lighters, candle smoke and lipstick . The Eagle was also where the announcement from Francis Crick and James Watson , that they have discovered DNA. read more

This is a really old pub with lot of character, the building is so old that its almost crumbling. They also have a nice patio seating outside but it was too cold in January to sit outside. Towards the back of the pub you an find the ceiling filled with messages from RAF and USAF service men, its pretty cool to see this history. There is also the spot where Kirk and Watson talked about DNA, although locals say a different story that Kirk and Watson stole the DNA idea from a lady researcher at the spot. The food is ok, regular pub food, typical tasteless english food what ever you want to call it, and flat warm beer. If you visit Cambridge you should stop by here to see the history and may be not for the food or beer. read more

This is a must see for anyone visiting Cambridge for the first time. A local gem, this pub has a great history and comfortable atmosphere.

The Eagle is a busy little pub located in the city centre of Cambridge which serves an incredibly generous portion of fish and chips for just under £9. The fish was delicious, and the chips - which came with potato skins still on - were to die for. The mushy peas weren't too nice, but the rest of the dish more than made up for that. The trout and stilton salad - our healthy option - was really tasty as well. read more

This pub obviously has a great place in human history as its where Watson and Crick shouted their Eureka and told the world about DNA . Can't be many educated criminals otherwise it would have been burned down by now . Instead we have pub companies who can do jyst as good a job . So its got plenty of original features , lots of dark wood and pretty standard bar furniture but nothing that gets you happy to be there . Its a bit false and touristy . The beer choice is totally underwhelming but quality ok . read more

The Eagle is one of those that you are naturally yet unwittingly drawn towards, whilst some of this may be down to it's prime location (close to the centre yet far enough away to detatch yourself from the throngs of tourists) there is an undeniable charm to this pub that makes a pint of ale that little bit sweeter. It is the ideal port of call for both an afternoon post-shopping drink or to kickstart a beer swilling night on the town. they advertising having the picture perfect pimms, and they don't disappoint. the pimms was lovely, refreshing, and a wonderful way to end the day after a spot of punting. for a lactose intolerant lady it is a touch difficult trying to find something on the menu. had originally wanted the chicken with chirzo pasta, but they had run out. i had the eagle burger instead, and the barman was very understanding ... even concerned if i could handle the bun incase there would be lactose in it. the only downside for me, and this truly a reflection on how popular the place is --- there are a number of very noisy american tourists. I am a tourist as well, visiting from canada, but i was put off by how load some of them could be. a lovely place to have pimms, plenty of seating and the bar staff are lovely. read more

Came here to meet with friends over lunch. Ordered the scotch egg and lamb on the lunch menu. Also ordered the DNA beer as recommended by reviewers here. The beer was excellent. My friends said the scotch egg was good (we split the egg four ways). I liked it because it costs the same in Harrods sans the salad (here they serve a salad on the side). Three stars for food and drink, fourth star for history and atmosphere. Like a decent majority, I was a tourist and heard that I had to check this place out. Rightly so. I typically try to avoid writing about places outside my geographic expertise but Yelp is nagging me and this place reeked of authenticity. Oh wait, it is actually the real deal, being in Cambridge and all. I liked the fact that there were students with textbooks as if it were Starbucks and families enjoying some pub fare all at the same time. Also of note for other tourists, there were no fratbags chugging pitchers of Bud Light like would be the case in the American equivalent. read more

A very traditional and popular pub situated in the middle of Cambridge. With various colleges close by this pub is extremly busy during term time as it is a prefered watering hole amongst the students. It is also an established restraunt serving a decent meal. Touristy and usually crowded, this pub does serve good food and is handy for the city centre, especially the Arts theatre. Plenty of rooms to sit in, and the back (or RAF) bar has a ceiling covered in smoky signatures of long ago airmen. Plenty of RAF and USSAF memorabilia on the walls, and a nice outdoor area for warmer months. read more

A very good place to get away from the general bustle, a little inconvenient that the food order place is right at the back but that is only a very minor downside, with its history and the RAF bar it's a great place to take tourists (especially Americans!) read more

A great centrally located pub with a wide selection of ales to choose from. Slightly pricier than other pubs around, but worth it for the atmosphere of high intellect that comes from a history of attracting the brightest student drinkers. Watson and Crick were known to have a cheeky pint or two here and one quite evening came up with the double helix theory of DNA design on the back of a bar mat!! read more

Lots of reviews about the historic character of this place (and with the RAF ceiling and the Watson & Crick DNA bar - with tourists snapping photos of themselves in front of the bar), its not surprising. What is surprising is that the food ain't too bad - was there for lunch with colleagues. The canneloni I had was large-sized, tasted pretty good and was not too unreasonably priced. Overall decent value for the money and good bragging rights when you take guests. read more

This pub is steeped in history for Cambridge and I can't complain about the bar or the service. You can stand and just soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a drink. The only real issue I have is because it is so popular you simply can't find a seat! Standing in tight spaces getting knocked around, spiking your drink becomes a little tiresome. This is a very nice historic bar. We were there around 5pm on a Saturday night and it was standing room only. We did get a table later on and ate there - the food was typical pub food but very nice. There is an outdoor patio that was full even on a cold night (there were heaters) so I can imagine this is very crowded in summer. read more

The history in this pub is amazing! Albeit a bit crowded and overheated, this pub is teeming with history, from plaques noting the exact location where Crick and Watson discovered DNA to the messages written by American WWII soldiers on the ceiling of the bar. Good drinks, too! read more

Lots of WWII history in the RAF/AAF pub... However, service down right sucks and food is Bad.

Eagle Public House gets an extra star for it's awesome history. As a science buff, it was a real thrill for me to eat at the same place that Watson and Crick frequented. The food seemed pretty average; no complaints. They have a nice selection on tap and the service was friendly. This place is definitely worth going to when visiting Cambridge. read more
